47 - Put on your war paint

The GRE is a competitive arena. In a real way, you're competing against everyone else in the entire world that is taking the GRE exam, and these people are often super smart and very ambitious. You want a top percentile score, and ETS normalizes GRE scores - meaning that no matter how people do, the scoring is curved such that only a small proportion do well. This is why it's so important to put on your war paint, as Orion explains.

46 - The only time you should re-attempt a GRE problem

46 - The only time you should re-attempt a GRE problem

We always tell you on this podcast that you really shouldn't go back and re-attempt problems, because to do so you'd need to save time to go back and that means you're rushing questions that you DO know how to answer.

But, in certain circumstances, it can be worthwhile to re-attempt a problem when you solve it for the first time and get an obviously wrong answer. There are two criteria: do you have time on this problem left over, and how surprised are you by the answer being wrong? Orion explains further in this episode.

45 - Overcoming ”the valley of disappointment”

45 - Overcoming ”the valley of disappointment”

Clear, in his book Atomic Habits, talks about the phenomenon "the valley of disappointment", which is the gap between your linear effort put towards something and the exponential results you gain from investing effort into that thing. The GRE is a perfect example of this: you'll often spend weeks practicing a problem type before the improvements really kick in. You don't want to quit too early or you'll miss the gains! Orion explains how he keeps his students motivated during this valley in this podcast.

44 - How does the GRE‘s adaptive difficulty work?

How well do you need to do in the first section of the GRE quant or verbal sections to unlock the more difficult (but higher scoring) second sections of the adaptive test? Orion covers this topic, why you can't game the system, and how to maximize your overall score on this week's episode.

43 - The worst question to ask yourself on the GRE

Let's imagine that you're taking the GRE and you come across a particularly tricky problem. You're stumped. Most students in that position ask themselves "What should I do?"

This is the worst question to ask yourself! Why? Listen to this week's episode to find out :)

42 - The power of visualization

42 - The power of visualization

How does the power of visualization relate to the GRE? Your performance on the GRE is just that - a performance. Like an athlete or an artist, you need to perform well on your test day to get the best possible GRE score. Orion was surprised to find that even his best students had trouble imagining that they would be successful on the GRE, and if you can't visualize it or believe it, how can you enact it? It's been proven in psychology studies that visualization makes you more likely to achieve an outcome, and the GRE is no different. Orion explains how to leverage visualization to reduce your test anxiety and improve your score.

Thank you! 96th percentile!

I cannot thank you enough for this podcast! The strategies you share are total game changers. I took the GRE before my Masters program 6 years ago and studied a bit here and there. I did very mediocre and got a score in the low 50th percentile for verbal and worse for quant and writing. I am applying to another graduate program that is more competitive than my previous Masters degree program and in typical fashion left studying until the last minute (2 weeks prior to the test). I knew I wouldn’t be able to learn and retain much content in 2 weeks so I focused on strategies instead. I took a power prep practice test and scored similarly to my test 6 years ago. After listening to all of your podcast episodes and looking through the free information on your site I scored 165/96th percentile in verbal, 156 in quant, and 91st percentile in writing which is believe was an overall score of 5. My program primarily focuses on the verbal score so I am feeling confident! Confession: I still listen to new episodes of the podcast even though I have no plans to take the GRE again.

Thank You (and one small suggestion)

Guys. Thank you so much! I often drive and need a way to study safely when I can’t do practice problems and YouTube. Love the unique approach you provide to the personal/mental side of the GRE.

However, I often have trouble hearing you both! I think the audio quality of the mics might not be best suited for podcasting. I know they make some good ones on Amazon that don’t cost a lot. Or, even AirPods have great quality when up close.

That’s the only thing holding this back from being my absolute favorite GRE prep podcast! But, again, thank you both so much for helping me study.

Highly recommend!

I have been studying for the GRE for a couple of years on and off and for once I feel like I have an edge to break into the 90th percentile in quant after discovering these guys and the stellar system. Orion is really incredible and had a unique strategy for test-taking that is both practical and brainy at the same time. Thanks guys!
