    The Best NJspots

    The Best NJspots

#NJspots started 7 years ago when Virginia Buechel realized there weren't many Instagram accounts that celebrated New Jersey. It has since grown to one of the most popular social media accounts that focuses on the Garden State.

    Segment 1
Virginia takes us through her background and how she started NJspots. Starting as just a hashtag, which Virginia also takes us through the importance of on Instagram, NJspots seeks to highlight photographers from around New Jersey to show people all the great things the Garden State has to offer.

Today in New Jersey History: Boxer Marvelous Marvin Hagler was born on May 23, 1954 in Newark, New Jersey. He was the Undisputed World Middleweight Champion from 1980 to 1987. He would get upset that sportscasters would often not use his nickname "Marvelous," so in 1982 he legally changed his name to Marvelous Marvin Hagler.

    Segment 2
The #NJspots hashtag began as just a way to keep people who were photographing New Jersey connected, but has since grown to an Instagram following of over 60,000 people! Virginia takes us through how she built that and how others can do that too.

New Jersey Fun Fact: The first seaplane was built in keyport, NJ

    Segment 3
#NJspots was built on the foundation of community. Similar to some of our other guests like Jersey Collective, Virginia is always connecting with people who love New Jersey, just like us. She takes us through some of the community building events she's hosted and how amazing those of us who love New Jersey are.

    Segment 2
After her appearance in Vogue, more things started to manifest for Courtney. She started her own company, Iron Grace Fitness and eventually had the opportunity to try out for WWE Divas. Fighting Homelessness in New Jersey

    Fighting Homelessness in New Jersey

Homelessness is an issue throughout the country and it can sometimes seem overwhelming trying to figure out how to solve this complex issue. Right here in New Jersey though, Jenny DePaul is doing her part to help fight homelessness. Starting out by bringing sandwiches to Penn Station in Newark and having lunch with people there, eventually that snowballed and Project Kind was born.

    Segment 1
Jenny takes us through her background growing up in New Jersey and describing how Project Kind started. She wasn't just bringing sandwiches and dropping them off, she would sit and learn about their lives and then share their stories to the world. Project Kind's reach now goes well beyond Newark, Penn Station, and even New Jersey, but she's helped touch over 100,000 lives in some way across the country.
Today in New Jersey History: George Griswold Frelinghuysen was born on May 9, 1851 in Newark, New Jersey. He was a patent lawyer and president of the New Jersey brewery, P. Ballantine & Sons Company.
    Segment 2
Jenny describes some of the events Project Kind holds like fundraising events and sandwich making events. There are more ways to support Project Kind beyond simply donating money, but there are plenty of items they need. Jenny also has a book coming out this year which she describes in this segment.
New Jersey Fun Fact: The world's largest kite festival is held annually in Wildwood, NJ
    Segment 3
We discuss the Kindness Closet and the impetus behind Jenny finally deciding to open a physical location for donations. We also highlight some of the organizations that have supported Project Kind, like the New York Giants, and ways that even the average person can support them.

    Soulfood is Love

    Soulfood is Love

Asahda's Soulfood Restaurant in Chatham may seem like an interesting choice for a town not known for its soul food. However, its food is incredible and authentic as it gets. Its owner, Karima Singleton, a full-time teacher, creates daily menus with love just like you're going over to her house for dinner.

    Segment 1
Karima takes us through her background and all the different paths life has taken her. She learned how to cook from her family and eventually opened up her first restaurant in Newark. She works full-time as an educator and after her work day is over, heads over to Asahda's in Chatham, sets the menu for the day, and gets to work.
Today in New Jersey History: Bruce Springsteen auditioned for Columbia Records A&R honcho John Hammond in New York City on May 2, 1972. Hammond was so impressed with the audition that he immediately arranged for Bruce Springsteen to play at the Gaslight Club that evening to share his discovery with fellow label executives.
    Segment 2
We learn all about the offerings at Asahda's and some of its most popular items, like their fried chicken which is one of their best sellers. Each day the menu is unique and is posted on their Instagram and Facebook page so customers know what is being offered that day.
New Jersey Fun Fact: When New Jersey did get its current name, it was named for Jersey Island, off the coast of the United Kingdom.
    Segment 3
Even though Chatham may not be considered a hotbed of soul food, but as long as Karima and Asahda's is in town, eventually it will be. The Chatham community, both patrons and business owners, have been so supportive of everything Karima is doing. If you haven't been here yet, you need to get over as soon as possible.

In perhaps the best segment of any episode we've done yet, Master Trainer Brian and Seeing Eye Dog Terry take Mike, who is blindfolded, on a walk around Morristown.
