    What's Going on in Colombia? (with Maria Paula Hernandez Ruiz and Connor Clery)

    Why is violence rising again in Colombia, ten years after the government signed a landmark peace deal with FARC? What does the election of a new right-wing president mean for the country's ongoing peace process? And how are militarisation, Trump-style politics, conservative backlash and conflict economies reshaping Colombian politics? Jasmine and Nora sit down to unpack the rapidly changing political landscape in Colombia with Maria Paula Hernandez Ruiz, a Colombian PhD candidate at La Trobe University who has conducted oral histories of conflict in northern Colombia, and Dr Connor Clery, who teaches across several Victorian universities and did his PhD research with demobilising FARC units. Recorded shortly before the August earthquake, they explore the historical roots of Colombia's armed conflicts, the promises and challenges of the country's peace process, and the resurgence (or persistence) of violence in recent years. They discuss the implications of Colombia's recent election, growing militarisation, and a broader conservative backlash against many of the social and political reforms championed by the previous administration. As old conflicts take new forms, they ask what these developments mean for Colombia's future and whether peace can withstand the pressures of an increasingly polarised political environment.     From misogyny to extremism (with Sara Meger)

    Why are some young people embracing more traditional viewsabout gender? How are online influencers and digital spaces shaping the way young people think about their identities, grievances and politics? What does misogyny have to do with violent extremism and anti-liberal political movementsglobally? And what is the techno-patriarchy? Jasmine and Nora sit down with Dr Sara Meger from theUniversity of Melbourne to discuss her new research on misogyny, online radicalisation and youth extremism in Australia, and how this connects to her longer-term work on backlash movements, foreign fighters in Ukraine, and theglorified, gamified visions of "the warrior" that motivate some men. Drawing on one of the largest studies of its kind, they explore why growing numbers of young Australians are expressing support for traditional gender roles and anti-feminist ideas, how these attitudes are linked to extremistbeliefs across the ideological spectrum, and the role that online spaces, from social media and gaming platforms to pornography and "manfluencer" content, play in shaping them. Together, they trace the historical patterns that draw men to extremist causes – from the KKK to Al Qaeda – and ask whyunderstanding misogyny is critical to understanding not just contemporary political extremism, but the state of the world today.     What's going on in Myanmar? (with Sophia Htwe and Tamas Wells)

    What's driving the overlapping conflicts in Myanmar? What's daily life like for people living in areas affected by war? How does Myanmar's military regime constrain humanitarian aid and access? And how are criminal enterprises, like trafficking people for forced labour in scam centres, fuelling violence and instability? Jasmine and Nora sit down with Sophia Htwe, a Myanmar-born PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne, and Dr TamasWells, who leads the Myanmar Research Network at the University of Melbourne, to unpack the ongoing conflicts in Myanmar. Together, they explore the roots and complexities of the country's multiple armed conflicts, the everyday experiences of communities living through them, and the challenges of delivering much-needed humanitarian aid to the estimated 16 million people who need it to survive. They examine the role of Myanmar's military regime in restricting humanitarian access, the links between conflict and criminal economies, and why the idea of "peace" has become so contested in Myanmar today.
