Dr. Arturo and Tracy Paulino

Marriage, family, and relationships are some of the most rewarding parts of life — and also some of the most challenging. The Growing Couples Podcast is where real conversations meet professional insight. Hosted by Dr. Arturo and Tracy Paulino, a married therapy team with over two decades of experience (and 25 years of marriage themselves), this podcast dives into what it truly takes to build, sustain, and grow healthy relationships. Arturo and Tracy are not only Licensed Mental Health and Marriage & Family Counselors — they’re also parents to five daughters, a cross-cultural couple, and partners who have lived through their own seasons of joy and hardship. From raising kids and navigating cultural differences to pursuing personal healing and professional growth, their marriage has been shaped by the same struggles and triumphs their clients face every day. This mix of professional authority and lived experience is what makes Growing Couples both relatable and practical. Each episode blends storytelling, therapeutic principles, and candid conversation. Some days you’ll hear laughter and lighthearted banter; other times, you’ll find deeper reflections on the work it takes to overcome struggles in communication, intimacy, trust, and family life. Topics range widely but stay grounded in real-life challenges couples face: Strengthening intimacy and rebuilding trust Navigating conflict and learning healthier communication Relationship recovery after infidelity or betrayal Premarital counseling and preparing for marriage Cross-cultural marriage and faith in relationships Parenting transitions, blended families, and raising kids Addiction, recovery, and mental health challenges in marriage Boundaries, forgiveness, and personal growth inside partnership Finding resilience through trauma, grief, and loss Balancing professional and personal lives as a couple What sets this podcast apart is the way Arturo and Tracy draw from both worlds: the clinical and the personal. Arturo, with an Ed.D. in Marriage & Family Counseling, EMDR Certification, and leadership training, brings a structured, research-based perspective. Tracy, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Addiction Professional, adds her expertise in mental health, addiction recovery, and perinatal support. Together, they create conversations that are both empathetic and practical, academic yet accessible. At its heart, Growing Couples is about hope. It’s about the belief that even in seasons of struggle, relationships can grow deeper, stronger, and more meaningful. Whether you’re married, engaged, dating, or simply curious about the psychology of relationships, you’ll find encouragement, insight, and real-life strategies to apply in your own life. This isn’t about presenting a picture-perfect marriage. It’s about two therapists inviting you into honest discussions — with all the imperfections, humor, and grace that make relationships human. S1E4: Are People Naturally More Drawn to Stability or Excitement in Relationships?

Are people naturally more drawn to stability or excitement in relationships? In this episode of Growing Couples, hosts Aruro Paulino and Tracy explore the tension between these two powerful forces that shape how relationships begin, grow, and last. They dive into the concept of limerence—the early “honeymoon phase” where everything feels intoxicating and exciting—and contrast it with the deeper reliability, trust, and commitment that couples need to build a healthy foundation over time. Through open conversation and personal stories, Aruro and Tracy share how excitement plays a crucial role in sparking attraction, but stability is what ultimately sustains love. They discuss how novelty and fun can be intentionally woven into long-term relationships without sacrificing security, and why understanding each partner’s definition of stability matters so much. Together, they reflect on faith, commitment, and the importance of removing certain destructive patterns—like seeing divorce as an option—so that stability can grow in a healthy way. Listeners will come away with practical insights about balancing novelty with reliability, recognizing when excitement is helpful and when it can be misleading, and how to keep a relationship fresh while still building on the strong pillars of commitment. If you’ve ever wondered whether love should feel safe or thrilling, this conversation offers both clarity and encouragement. Subscribe to Growing Couples for weekly episodes filled with honest dialogue, practical takeaways, and hopeful conversations about what it really takes to grow together in love, faith, and life.

S1E2: Do You Think Marriage Changes People?

Welcome to the Growing Couples Podcast, where marriage and family counseling, lived experience, and faith come together to help couples grow stronger. Hosted by Aruro Paulino and Tracy, both experienced marriage and family counselors, this show is built around the real questions that couples face every day. Our mission is to make space for honest conversations, practical tools, and faith-centered insights that strengthen relationships for the long run. In this episode, we wrestle with a question many couples ask themselves: Does marriage truly change people—or does it simply bring out more of who they already are? From our work in marriage and family counseling, as well as our own relationship journey, we’ve seen both sides of this. Some qualities are core to who we are, while others shift and transform in the context of marriage. Change is part of growth—but not all change is equal. That’s why the heart of our discussion centers on influence. Marriage is more than two people coexisting. It’s two people making the intentional choice to share life and allow one another to shape, refine, and challenge them. Healthy influence is what helps couples thrive, but unhealthy influence can erode trust and connection. Many couples enter counseling asking us to “fix” their spouse—or fearing they’ll have to give up their own identity. In this episode, we unpack why both of those perspectives can lead to disappointment and frustration, and how a better way forward is rooted in mutual, respectful influence. As Christian marriage and family therapists, we also bring faith into the conversation. We talk about the “triangle model” of marriage: there’s a me, a you, and also God’s presence and agency within the relationship. That spiritual influence—when embraced—offers direction, safety, and hope that goes beyond what either partner could create on their own. At the same time, we acknowledge that not all influence is good, even in Christian marriages. Discernment and ongoing dialogue are essential. Some highlights you’ll hear in this episode: Why marriage both reveals who we are and invites us to change. The role of influence: how it can be healthy, honoring, and growth-producing—or destructive and unsafe. Why “change my partner” is an unhealthy counseling expectation. How trust, shared values, and faith make influence safer and more meaningful. The unique role of God’s agency in marriage counseling and in our daily lives as couples. A reflective question you can take into your own relationship: How have I influenced my partner, and how has my partner influenced me? Our hope is that every episode of Growing Couples leaves you encouraged, challenged, and equipped with a deeper perspective on your relationship. Whether you’re dating, newly married, or decades into your journey, you’ll find practical wisdom and faith-based encouragement here. Marriage isn’t about losing yourself—it’s about growing together. Change is part of that process, but when change is rooted in safety, respect, and faith, it creates space for a flourishing partnership. Join us in this thoughtful conversation, and keep walking with us as we share stories, counseling insights, and questions that help couples grow—because growth is what keeps love alive. 👉 Explore more resources, episodes, and ways to connect with us here: https://linktr.ee/growingcouples
