Episode 12: Retired Army Aviator Paul Burke

Paul Burke is a retired Army Aviator with 30 years of service, combining active, National Guard, and Army Reserve time, entered the service in 1979 as a Special Forces Medical NCO. After a parachuting injury, he completed college and attended US Army Flight School, spending the remainder of his military career as an army aviator. He entered as a Private E-1 and retired as Colonel O-6, primarily flying the AH-1 Cobra, with additional experience in the UH-1 Huey and AH-64 Apache. He also worked with the Baltimore County Fire Department, retiring as a Captain and Shift Commander. In 1994, he trained as a Physician Assistant and has since worked full-time and part-time in multiple states, focusing on emergency medicine in both high-volume urban settings and critical access sites in remote locations. Currently, he flies a Cessna 182, traveling from Tennessee to Alaska, Texas, Colorado, Maine, and Florida. After Hurricane Helene, he converted the back seat into cargo space to assist Operation Air Drop, delivering 3800 pounds of emergency supplies to western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, where airports were the only viable delivery means due to flooding and road damage. He met remarkable individuals, including UH-1 Huey crews from the Confederate Airforce, but did not encounter FEMA. He also achieved a unique trifecta by performing the commissioning oath for his oldest son, the oath of enlistment for his daughter, and the oath of reenlistment for his son-in-law. Proud to be an American, he feels honored to have served in the military and considers himself fortunate in many ways.
