Haikoup # 20 | How to Refuse the System

The world is f*cked but is there a cure? In my previous video I discussed how the system enforces a mental health degradation that serves to atomize our sense of self and collective bargaining power. In today’s episode I’ll be analyzing this further, as well as revisiting the thinkers I discussed in the last video, to see if there’s any solutions available. Is there any way out of this systematized oppression via capital? Or is the mental degradation a feature, not a bug, of late stage capitalism and Capitalist Realism. In this video, I’ll be further contextualizing the current state of the system by looking at Darren Allen and his notions on the myth of Mental health in the techno-industrial society, I’ll also be looking at the work of Oliver James and the Selfish capitalist and the work of Joe Henrich and how W.E.I.R.D societies of the Western world, skew the data for diagnosing Mental illness. I’ll then propose the antidote to this age of apathy, by revisiting: Mark Fisher and his notion of an austerity of capital, a subversion to reclaim the power of the individual from the jaws of capital. Hartmut Rosa and his work on resonance as an antidote to the dehumanizing mechanism of capital. I’ll also look at the ideas posited by Jonathan Crary, in his phenomenal work ‘24/7: Late Capitalism and the end of Sleep and how the reclaiming of rest can be used as an act of radicality. I’ll look at the way centralized power systems are structured in technofeudalism and how this, inadvertently, weakens the role of the techno-feudalist. Finally I’ll analyze the work of Byul Chung Han and how his notion of reclaiming the negative echoes the ideas put forth by Herbert Marcuse and the Great refusal which I’ll also be looking at in greater detail. And whilst the system and its injustices are never ending, I will end out the episode on a blueprint, on the power of radical, tragic optimism, as coined by Viktor Frankl and how we can and should collectivize to enforce a stronger bargaining position against those that will gladly shun us from the arc of progress and posit how we can enforce the change we want to see in the world, and how we build those very systems to save ourselves from the jaws of defeatism.visit haikoup.substack.com for show notes.
