This week's guest on "Happiness through Hardship" - The Podcast is Shantana Hazel - talking about endometriosis and patient advocacy. She’s the founder of Sister Girl Foundation, the author of “28 Ways on How to Advocate for Your Health Care” and "A New Me - Mind, Body, Soul, Health & Wellness Journal" and has been recognized with numerous awards around the world for her dedication and commitment advocating for women’s healthcare. While she’s the life of the party, full of laughs and always willing to grab a karaoke mic, she has lived with life altering pain and deep anguish from endometriosis since she was a teenager. Sixteen surgeries and nearly three decades later she took the pain and turned it into purpose. Shantana is committed to ensuring that women with chronic illnesses including endometriosis and cancers aren't suffering in silence and receive proper care.

Shantana’s story is full of inspiring words, lessons on resilience and how to advocate for yourself after a health diagnosis (endometriosis and more)....so please listen to this episode and if you like rate, review and subscribe. This helps with our podcast ranking and increases the chances of others finding it.

Shantana and I also share the importance of journaling or documenting conversations and information after receiving any diagnosis. Shantana and I also share the importance of journaling or documenting conversations and information after receiving any diagnosis. I believe that having a medical binder or digitized folder with files, notes and thoughts can be really beneficial (listen to mini-episode 1) and she agrees. As she puts it in today's episode, we all get “brain fog” when going through stressful situations and having notes on not only what we learn about our diagnosis, but how we feel with any side effects related to them can be helpful to keep handy in a journal. As she puts it, we all get “brain fog” when going through stressful situations and having notes on not only what we learn about our diagnosis, but how we feel with any side effects related to them can be helpful to keep handy in a journal. (See link below for both Shantana and my journals.) We also talk about the importance of gratitude in our lives and have a blast playing "The Grateful Game" at the end.

Episode 9: Abby Lawson - A BRCA1 Previvor Organizing Life

Episode 9: Abby Lawson - A BRCA1 Previvor Organizing Life

This week’s guest on Happiness through Hardship - The Podcast is previvor, Abby Lawson. She’s the founder of Just a Girl & Her Blog and an organization and design expert, who with her husband runs an entrepreneurial venture. She’s full of advice for anyone wanting to organize their home, design a new space and even help show others how blogging can be a family run business. While I found her and fell in love with her organization of Lego space, she’s known for offering courses and free printables on a variety of topics. Though we could talk for hours about creating a thriving home, on today's episode Abby shares her story as a BRCA1 previvor. A Previvor is someone who has taken action to eliminate risks of disease, often having a predisposition to cancer. This group includes people who carry a hereditary mutation, a family history of cancer, or some other predisposing factor. Abby tells us about the decisions she made knowing she was a carrier of BRCA1. BRCA1 is a genetic mutation and those who carry it have a much higher risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer compared with someone who doesn't have the mutation.

Abby’s story about being a BRCA1 previvor is informative and enlightening. She’s incredibly sweet and feels like a new friend...so please listen to this episode and if you like rate, review and subscribe. This helps with our podcast ranking and increases the chances of others finding it.

    8. Laura Saltman: Transformation through Tragedy - Family Deaths, Miscarriages and a Soulful Journey

    8. Laura Saltman: Transformation through Tragedy - Family Deaths, Miscarriages and a Soulful Journey

This week’s episode on Happiness through Hardship - The Podcast highlights Laura Saltman, an author, meditation teacher, intuitive guidance coach and TV/Digital Host. Her journey from red carpet reporter to Hollywood Healer began after her life was turned upside down - she lost her brother to cancer, her father to suicide, suffered multiple miscarriages and more. Laura NEEDED tools to help her cope and live beyond the pain, sadness and depression.

She looked for alternate therapies to heal and then she jumped in…She learned, experienced and became and expert, teacher and soldier in the spiritual game. She has learned how to transform lives through connection to metaphysical intelligence inspiring people to think, live and love better. She’s well-versed in meditation, chakra balancing and intuitive healing.

At one time, this seemed WOO WOO to me...and I would have smiled and walked away. Though, in recent years, a dear friend who loved quantum physics would talk to me a lot about the healing power of energy. She encouraged me to be open to all modalities of healing. Then I met Laura on a panel where we both spoke at ShiftCon…. and she spoke a similar language so I tried more holistic driven healing modalities. When I was open about changing the language in how I spoke to myself, when I was open about finding time to just be in silence and when I was open to using different modalities on how to heal - I felt calm. I felt a sense of peace and I felt good.

I encourage you to listen to Laura and be open...even if this is new to you or not something you would do. I’ve found it’s been helpful to know what is out there in the world that can help with stress-reduction, ailments and just coping with whatever life throws.

Laura’s journey is a rollercoaster and her heart and soul so kind, pure and helpful to many...we can all learn a lot from her stories and her insights on life.

    5. Rachel Rosenthal: COVID-19 & Autoimmune Disease - A Story of Recovery

    5. Rachel Rosenthal: COVID-19 & Autoimmune Disease - A Story of Recovery

When we started the podcast production, taping many episodes, it was before COVID-19 became a global pandemic. Within weeks, even days, the world changed immensely and I wanted to connect with someone who understood the hardship dealing with the virus. Even now as many people are phasing back into socialization, this virus is still a threat and top of mind especially for those touched by a compromised immunity...like myself and today’s guest, Rachel Rosenthal, founder of the professional organizing agency, Rachel and Company. Rachel is an authority focused on home and office organization that’s simple and practical. She left a powerful desk job to follow her passion and now 2500 clients later, has made it into a booming business. In addition to being a successful entrepreneur recognized worldwide, she’s also a mom of identical tween daughters and living a life with Hashimoto’s disease.

Rachel spoke with me just weeks into her recovery from COVID-19. She shares with us how she got through, demonstrates some exercises for COVID chest congestion that she learned from CNN’s Chris Cuomo and how her passion for organizing helped her find a little peace during her journey. We also laugh about meal planning, lipstick and touch upon a few tips along the way.

Please enjoy and take a minute to rate, review and subscribe. You leaving a review helps us with our podcast ranking. The higher we are ranked, the more people can discover our show. Tune in every Wednesday for new episodes.

Such an easy listen

I've really enjoyed listening to this podcast. Not only is it extremely motivational, but it's also a fun and breezy listen. It's like listening to two friends talk over the phone. Should also be noted that the guest list so far has been very impressive. Can't wait to see what else is in store here.

Rose, bulb and thorn

Rose: Love love love this conversation with Samantha Harris. I was that woman she talked about, walking around with a lump in my armpit without having it checked out, thinking that it was nothing. Thorn: 4 months later, that was me again receiving the diagnosis of Triple negative breast cancer- at least stage 3- I read on the biopsy report.
Like you girls I changed EVERYTHING that was not good in my life ( the eating, the stress level, exercise routine, spirituality). I’ve been free from disease for couple of years now 🙏🏼. And following people like Caryn and Samantha is what keep me on my feet. Bulb: I’m always learning and have helped brighten up couple of my friends lives when they received their diagnosis. Clean and healthy living. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
