They have a network of volunteer pilots who use their own airplanes and cover all costs of flight. The organization focuses on bridging the gap in access to medical care for underserved and rural communities. They also provide compassion flights to keep families together during medical treatment.     Talking gender norms outtake from Ess Hödlmoser

    Bonus Content A while ago I had the opportunity to interview Ess Hödlmoser on 52 Weeks of Health Equity and I don't do a lot of video content but this was one of the outtakes. Feels fitting to publish an outtake about gender norms in March. Ess is a nonbinary trans circus artist from Toronto, Canada who specializes in aerial straps and contortion. You may know them from their work in television and film, maybe The Expanse, or The Boys, or Motherland. I found Ess through their aerial work. Most recently a performance called Atelier Barbette, and they were kind enough to spend an afternoon chatting. We discussed breaking artistic barriers, health equity, and what it’s like being a self-employed artist with intersecting historically marginalized identities. We talked about circus work and healthcare.  What it's like being marginalized including being trans, autistic, and nonbinary, and getting healthcare. There was so much great content that I wanted to share because we talked about so many things. This outtake is some of what did not make it in, which included a piece on male bodies, body dysmorphia, and how gender norms hurt us all.

    From Advocacy to Action: Court Appointed Special Advocate's Role in Improving Health Outcomes

    On this episode of 52 Weeks of Health Equity, we were joined by guest representatives from the Pennsylvania CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) program. Jennifer DeBalko, the president and CEO of PA CASA, and Ashley Frank Chief Impact Officer shared personal stories about how they became involved with CASA, witnessing the power of volunteer advocacy and the importance of data in supporting children in the child welfare system. Our CASA guests shared that Pennsylvania CASA is one of the first states to implement a course that tracks the outcomes in the case management system that CASA volunteers utilize. The eventual goal is to provide this training nationally so all volunteers have the opportunity to be as well informed of their role as healthcare advocates and improve outcomes holistically for children supported by the CASA program.     Romance writing has long been misunderstood as simply a guilty pleasure for women to indulge in their fantasies about sex and relationships. However, it has always been about much more than that. Romance books often provide us with stories where women get to choose non-traditional paths, be sexually satisfied, and basically have happy endings. But there is something taboo about a woman who chooses her pleasure, who gets to make her own decisions. Lady Chatterley's Lover a book that often tops banned book lists, isn't just a story about sexual awakening but a woman who chooses a non-traditional path to happiness. The romance genre has evolved to become a platform for authors to explore themes of consent, reproductive rights, and sexual health. Despite this evolution, romance novels are still often banned and dismissed, making it a topic that deserves more attention, especially when we talk about health equity.
