Ep 51 with physical therapist Dr Chelsea Matthews

Ep 51 with physical therapist Dr Chelsea Matthews

Back pain! 😩 One of the most common complaints affecting the majority of us at some point in our lives. Anyone else spend too long hunching over a laptop in early lockdown days?
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Chat to someone who’s had a back issue and you’ll hear how daunting it can be. Maybe you’ve been told you have to lose weight to get rid of your back pain. There might be fears around surgery, inactivity, worsening injuries - you name it.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So I wanted to do a #healthHackers episode with Dr Chelsea Matthews - a physical therapist, exercise specialist and former athlete who loves to nip back ache in the bud and resolve her clients’ pain WITHOUT resorting to surgery, injections - or ANY procedures that would mean they have to take time off work.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I had no idea there were so many myths around injuries until I found Chelsea. In this podcast, she debunks plenty of ideas about looking after your back that you’ve probably innocently believed for a long, long time.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
    In episode 51, we cover:
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔹how Chelsea has helped hundreds of clients get out of pain and back to their workouts without injections or surgery
    🔹tips for a healthy back
🔹is rest always the best first aid for an injury?
🔹things to know if you’ve been told you need to lose weight to be pain free
🔹is sleeping on your front bad for your back?
🔹you’ll likely get a disk protrusion one day - but that’s OK
🔹you must always sit up straight for a healthy back - true or false?
🔹staying on top of your mental health during recovery
    🔹reframing pain
🔹plus, how strong our spines really are

Ep 50 with functional dentistry expert Dr Mark Burhenne

Ep 50 with functional dentistry expert Dr Mark Burhenne

Have you ever heard of mouth taping? I recently posted about it on my Instagram Stories the other week (@healthhackers). I’d seen functional dentistry expert and creator of AsktheDentist.com Dr Mark Burhenne talking about it, so I asked my followers if they wanted me to record a healthHackers episode with him. The result of the vote was a majority YES. Well, here we are.👇

But we don’t just talk about mouth taping. Oh no, Dr B was kind enough to let me quiz him on his expert insights gathered over 35 years as a dentist. Some of it might surprise you. He takes a “microbiome-first” approach to dental health; big on prevention and getting to the root cause of a problem. He’s also the author of ‘The 8-Hour Sleep Paradox.’

In this episode, you’ll hear Dr B’s views on:

🔹how to keep your oral microbiome happy
    🔹why it’s better to be a nose-breather than a mouth-breather
🔹mouth taping and why he recommends it
🔹a link between oral health and Alzheimer’s
🔹why using mouthwash is a mistake
🔹what to eat for a healthy mouth
🔹why he uses a hydroxyapatite toothpaste instead of a fluoride-containing paste
🔹insights for healthy-minded parents who can’t figure out why their children need fillings
🔹why he brushes his teeth before breakfast
🔹why you shouldn’t brush straight after a meal
🔹how pregnancy can affect teeth - and what women can do about it
🔹an easy step to help your oral microbiome after a cup of coffee or glass of wine (it’s not brushing)
🔹plus, what it means if you snore

Ep 49 with skin specialist and clinical nutritionist Jennifer Fugo

Ep 49 with skin specialist and clinical nutritionist Jennifer Fugo

Eczema, psoriasis, hives, dermatitis, rosacea… have you ever dealt with a chronic skin rash? If yes, I know your misery. And so does this week’s healthHacker’s expert guest - more so than most. As a functional clinical nutritionist specializing in chronic rashes (and who’s suffered with her own painful skin issues) Jennifer Fugo is the go-to practitioner for her clients who are trying to figure out what’s underlying their rashes, plus any accompanying symptoms, like brain fog, chronic fatigue, autoimmunity and gut health issues.

It was Jennifer’s experience of successfully improving her own painful eczema that inspired her to help others figure out the root causes of their chronic rashes. She’s the founder of Skinterrupt - an online hub of information on a variety of difficult skin conditions, and the host of the Healthy Skin Show podcast. Jennifer is also a member of the American Nutrition Association, an advisor for the Nutritional Aesthetics Alliance, and authored the book ‘The Savvy Gluten-Free Shopper: How to Eat Healthy without Breaking the Bank.’

In this episode, you’ll hear Jennifer’s views on:

🔹the hidden causes of chronic rashes
🔹what's worked to get rid of her clients' rashes
🔹the one thing that everyone with a chronic rash should NOT do
    🔹the problem with elimination diets
🔹three tips for rebuilding healthy skin
🔹why being ‘too clean’ can be bad for our skin
    🔹the purpose of a rash
🔹the impact of a carnivore diet on her clients’ test results
🔹a telling effect from switching to a vegan diet

The skin and its links to the gut microbiome is so intriguing to me. Some of you might remember the article I wrote about my three-year chronic case of perioral dermatitis (and what I did that finally got rid of it). I updated it recently and added a quote from Jennifer in the piece too. You can read it here:

Ep 48 with ‘The Carb Addiction Doc’ - Dr Robert Cywes

Ep 48 with ‘The Carb Addiction Doc’ - Dr Robert Cywes

If you’ve seen Dr Robert Cywes on his YouTube channel you’ll be familiar with his straight talking, no fuss videos aimed at those looking to find out what's at the root of their diabetes or obesity.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
His medical background includes 18 years of performing obesity surgery (over 8000 times). He’s also a board certified pediatric general surgeon and specializes in helping adults and teenagers through his practice in Palm Beach, Florida.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dr Cywes used to weigh nearly 300 pounds - and has described his experience as an “ongoing journey” of losing weight and understanding why he became heavy.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do not expect this episode of healthHackers to be a lecture on eating less and exercising more. Dr Cywes is known for taking a different approach. One that looks at tackling addiction to carbohydrates.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
    In this episode, you’ll hear:

🔹why overeating is emotional, not nutritional
🔹the problem with too much sugar
🔹why he says sugar and carb addictions are more intense than alcohol or nicotine habits
🔹reasons Dr Cywes hates the word “diet”
🔹how obesity is a protective mechanism
🔹his response to those who criticize him for demonizing carbs
🔹how carbs aren’t what they used to be
🔹why he believes we should stop giving our kids sugary foods as “treats”
🔹how being slim doesn’t mean you’re not addicted to carbs

Ep 47 with transformative coach, anxiety author & entrepreneur, Nicola Bird

Ep 47 with transformative coach, anxiety author & entrepreneur, Nicola Bird

After more than 20 years of anxiety and panic attacks (that were so bad she didn’t leave the house for weeks at a time), Nicola discovered “a completely new way of understanding how human beings create their experience of anxiety and how to dissolve it almost effortlessly.”

She wrote a book about her insights: ‘A Little Peace of Mind: The Revolutionary Solution for Freedom from Anxiety, Panic Attacks and Stress,’ and runs programs coaching others about the understanding she discovered.

The first time I saw Nicola was when one of her videos popped up in my Facebook feed. The way she described her former anxious thinking was so relatable (anxiety and me go back a long way😜) and when I heard her compare the nature of thought to the ticker tape on a news channel - it resonated even more (I’m a former TV news journalist and presenter), so I signed up to one of her courses to learn about the insights that changed her life so dramatically.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Not long after that, I invited her on to healthHackers so that you guys could hear about her solution too. I’m happy to say she said yes. And now here we are - episode 47 with transformative coach and author, Nicola Bird.😁

In this podcast, you’ll hear Nicola explain:
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔹the key insights that changed her relationship with anxiety and panic attacks
🔹unstoppable thoughts, and why you don’t have to jump on them
    🔹dealing with “what if..?”
🔹why she quit trying to find solutions
🔹how long it took for her to find peace
    🔹relinquishing the need to control
🔹how her new insights wiped 90% of tasks off her to-do list
🔹the new feel-good venture that grew from her garden
🔹plus, who is Sydney Banks and what are the Three Principles?
