"Distance Traveled" with Roberta Camarena, UCSD Admissions

On our sixth episode of "Hearing Her Voice", we had the pleasure of speaking with Ms.Roberta Camarena. She is the assistant director of admissions, diversity, and recruitment at UCSD. Her job encompasses: Outreach, recruitment and yield of prospective students with specific attention to traditionally underrepresented (low income, first-generation, tribal affiliated) populations in Southern California's Inland Empire. While the admissions process might seem like a black box, we had a glimpse through the process from her and discussed some tips and tricks to explain the most crucial thing in deciding who to join their class: the distance traveled. This episode also discusses not only why higher education is important but also the importance of diversity for an institution. Our conclusion was that as much as we want UCSD the school also needs us to help them pause for a moment and think about the community that they should be representing. She has a lot to share and we hope you enjoy the episode. --   Hearing Her Voice is brought to you by Women’s March San Diego at UCSD.  Producer: Scarlett Lopez, Jinho Jung   Design Director: Melisa Wang   Creative Director: Zuri Inzunza   Technical Director: Katherine Cordova   This episode was edited by Jinho Jung If you know someone whom we should contact or want to be on our podcast, please email us at wmsducsandiego@gmail.com   To learn more about Women’s March San Diego at UCSD, please visit our website on linktree. https://linktr.ee/Womensmarchucsd   Subscribe to Women's March San Diego at UCSD for more episodes. *Special shoutout to Liliana Morales who made this episode possible. "Self-Reflection" with Dr.Kristina Mendez, UCSD CAPS

On our fifth episode of "Hearing Her Voice", we had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Kristina Mendez. She is part of UCSD CAPS, which stands for Counseling and Psychological Services. She is currently a post-doctoral resident at UCSD and has great interests in Latinx students, chronic stress related to systemic oppression, and more. She reminded us of the importance of self-reflection and most importantly the resources UCSD provides to support student well-being.   After our discussion, I realized my internal hesitance towards seeking these services disappeared. Counselors are like your best friend who is always there to listen and support you. We hope you feel the same after hearing this episode.   #Resources by Dr. Mendez#  CAPS Providers CAPS iFlourish Self-help resources CAPS help center resources Yoga for Ethnic and Race-Based Stress video with Dr. Mendez CARE at SARC for survivors of sexual trauma at UCSD Trauma-informed yoga for survivors of sexual trauma: ZABIE — Zabie Yamasaki  #AAPI Resources#  Campus Community Centers: (https://diversity.ucsd.edu/centers-resources/community-centers.html)  OASIS: (https://oasis.ucsd.edu/)  UCSD Asian Pacific Islander Middle Eastern Desi American Programs: (https://apimeda.ucsd.edu/)  UC San Diego AAPI Studies Program: Anti-Asian Violence Statement and Resources: (https://aapi.ucsd.edu/about/director-message.html)   #For Continued Community Support#  ● Stop AAPI Hate: for reporting hate crimes related to the Asian/Asian-American/Pacific Islander communities (https://stopaapihate.org/)  ● Stand Against Hatred - Asian Americans Advancing Justice (https://www.standagainsthatred.org/)  ● National AAPI Mental Health Association: resources for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) mental health Services in all 50 states and COVID-19 related resources (https://www.naapimha.org/resources)  ● Asian, Pacific Islander, and South Asian American (APISAA) Therapist Directory (https://www.asianmhc.org/apisaa)  ● Asian Americans for Equality: New York-based community organization that offers online and telephone assistance in tenant counseling, immigration services, youth and senior programs, and job training skills.  (https://www.aafe.org/)  ● SD API Coalition: San Diego based Asian Pacific Islander coalition whose mission is to facilitate conversations with API communities and advocate for representation of voices.
