As someone who is not very familiar with the Odyssey, I can tell you that it did not hinder my enjoyment of Hearthbound. At its heart, it is a story about hope, community, and change, which is my cup of tea. Not to mention it’s unapologetically queer. From the first episode, the environmental sounds completely immersed me into the environment and the folky Americana music is incredible. I am gonna need an album stat! I can easily be turned off of an audio drama from one bad actor, but all the performances felt so grounded in the world that I didn’t feel the need for any in depth lore drop. Hearthbound chooses to take its time and really sit in the humanity of each moment. It is nice to experience more of a slow-burn story that keeps me listening without having to perpetually raise the stakes.
