Parenting while Grieving with Pastor Xavier Maryland

What happens when you are grieving, but you are still a parent and your children still need you? Pastor Xavier and I have an honest conversation about parenting through grief and the reality that children experience loss differently from adults and the fact that sometimes, you don't need to save them or fix them, sometimes you just need to "sit in the ashes". When a family is grieving, it can be easy to become consumed by our own pain and forget that our children are trying to understand the loss too. They may not always have the words to explain what they are feeling, and their grief may show up through their behavior, silence, questions, anger, fear, or need for reassurance We explore what it means to make room for your own grief while still paying attention to what your children may be carrying. Parenting while grieving isn’t about pretending to be strong or hiding your emotions or engaging in distractive or constructive behaviors. It is about learning how to grieve with your children without making them responsible for your pain.Xavier Maryland is a pastor, speaker, husband, and father based in the Houston area. As a communicator, he brings together faith, humor, vulnerability, and real-life experience to help people navigate life with greater hope and perspective. Having walked through grief and loss personally while also caring for others through some of life’s most difficult moments, he speaks candidly about the intersection of faith, grief, mental health, and what it means to keep moving forward when life doesn’t go as planned.
