    The 1910 Newcastle Train Murder

In this episode, you’ll explore a shocking railway murder from early 20th-century England and the legal case that followed it. The story centers on a wages clerk who is shot and robbed while traveling by train in Northern England in 1910, a crime that quickly captures public attention due to its brutality and the setting in which it occurred. Suspicion falls on a fellow passenger, a man facing severe financial difficulties, who is identified by witnesses as the victim’s traveling companion. His arrest leads to a highly publicized trial that becomes significant not only for the crime itself, but for how it interacts with evolving legal standards of the time. A key element of the case is the Criminal Evidence Act of 1898, which for the first time allowed defendants to testify in their own defense. Despite taking the stand, the accused fails to convince the jury of his innocence. The conviction is largely built on circumstantial evidence and witness identification, even as later appeals raise concerns about police procedures and the reliability of those identifications. Ultimately, the verdict is upheld, and the case ends with his execution. The story stands as a landmark moment in the development of modern British criminal law and reflects the tensions between new legal reforms, urban crime, and investigative methods in the early industrial age. The World's First Buried Railway Viaduct

In this episode, you’ll explore a dramatic archaeological excavation in South Wales aimed at rediscovering a major piece of early railway history hidden beneath an industrial landscape. The investigation focuses on a vast ten-arch viaduct believed to be one of the earliest of its kind, now buried under layers of mining waste accumulated since the 19th century. Using geophysical surveys, historical mapping, and heavy excavation equipment, researchers work to trace the lost structure beneath a terrain completely reshaped by industrial activity. As the dig progresses, the team uncovers more than just engineering remains. The foundations of workers’ cottages and a manager’s house reveal the harsh living conditions of those who powered the Industrial Revolution, offering a human perspective alongside the engineering achievement. To better understand the technologies of the time, the team also recreates period methods by smelting local iron ore and casting replica tram wheels, connecting modern research with historical craftsmanship. The excavation ultimately confirms the presence of a deeply buried culvert and mine entrances, indicating that the viaduct still survives far below the surface. Overall, the discovery highlights how industrial heritage can remain preserved beneath transformed landscapes, offering new insight into the scale, ambition, and human cost of early railway development.
