HIDE FM - Podcast is a work of art by artist Garrett Phelan. It takes the form of 28 imagined and performed monologues on 28 birds that are visitors to the Rogerstown Estuary, Lusk, North County Dublin, Ireland. They were performed by Garrett from October 2023 - January 2024 in Millbrook Studios, Rathfarnham, Dublin. They were originally transmitted via an independent radio station HIDE FM during Spring 2025. The podcast is a sensitive exploration of the Fragility of our ecosystem. Garrett explores the status, sound, diet, breeding patterns, movement and folklore of each bird type, with ‘sonic interruptions’ interspersed into the podcasts. They were performed and created to depict viewing birds during the seasons of Autumn/Winter/Early Spring at the location of THE HIDE SCULPTURE, Lusk, Co.Dublin. 12 of the 28 birds he features are on the endangered RED list. 10 of the birds are on the endangered AMBER list and 6 are on the GREEN LIST.     REDKNOT - CALIDRIS CANUTUS

    REDKNOT is known simply as KNOT. Its name in the Irish Language is ‘Cnota’. The Latin name is ‘CALIDRIS CANUTUS’.  It is a RED LISTED bird in Ireland.  It belongs to the family of the Sandpiper. It usually comes to Ireland during October to February. It comes all the way from Greenland and other high atlantic islands.  Once one of these little birds tagged as B95 had the nickname 'MOONBIRD'. This is because during the lifetime of this little plucky bird, its long-distance migrations exceeded the length of the journey from the Earth to the Moon. Before migration the  bird undergoes some physiological changes to account for the long journey. Flight muscles increase, leg muscles decrease. Similarly to other migrant birds, its stomach and gizzard mass decreases while fat mass increases by 50%. This is why it is incredibly important to preserve migrant bird landing/feeding grounds. Once they land they must instantly begin to feed. The conservation of the ecosystem is so important for the survival of the species.     SHELDUCK - TADORNA TADORNA

    SHELDUCK. Its name in the Irish Language is ‘Seil-lacha'. The Latin name is ‘TADORNA TADORNA’.  It is an AMBER LISTED bird in Ireland. DUCK is the common name for many species of waterfoul in the family of Anatidae. The word 'Duck' comes from the old english word 'Dūce - Diver'. The female is a 'Duck' the male is a 'Drake'. The shell part has nothing to do with Shells. 'Sheld' is the old english word for mixed in colour or pied.  There are several types of Shelduck. The one Garrett is imagining here is a 'Common' Shelduck. Ducks were important solar symbols in Celtic culture. Shelducks usually nest in holes like rabbit holes. Shelducks are not diving birds. Possibly when young but generally not as adults.     LITTLE EGRET - EGRETTA GARZETTA

    LITTLE EGRET. Its name in the Irish Language is ‘Éigrit bheag.  The Latin name is ‘EGRETTA  GARZETTA’.  It is a GREEN LISTED bird in Ireland. Understood by early Celts as a symbol of purity, poise and balance. A bird to be seen to occupy the liminal space between land and water and was considered to have the mystical ability to traverse between the 'Otherworld' and our own. A messanger bird. They eat frogs, small fish, rats, mice, small birds, snails and worms etc. The Little egret holds a fascinating history in the millinery world as it's feathers were used in the production of late 19 Century hats.     SPARROWHAWK - ACCIPITER NISUS

    SPARROWHAWK. Its name in the Irish Language is ‘Spioróg’.  The Latin name is ‘ACCIPITER NISUS’. It is a GREEN LISTED bird in Ireland. For such a powerful, sharp Raptor, Sparrowhawks don't live that long. No more than two years usually and this is mainly due to injury. Some collective nouns for this bird and other hawks include, a cast of, a lease of, a kettle of, a boil of.  A male Sparrowhawk was orignally called a 'musket' in Norman times. The name given to the bolt on a cross bow and again the name of a hand gun. You can find it spontaneoulsy eating its kill in your backgarden, quite a sight to behold. They usually symbolise grace and power and in some cultures are are seen to represent, courage, strength, rebirth, hope, good luck and fortune. In celtic mythology it is often associated with warriors and queens.     GREY HERON - ARDEA CINERIA

    GREY HERON. Its name in the Irish Language is ‘Corr réisc’.  The Latin name is ‘ARDEA  CINEREA’. It is a GREEN LISTED bird in Ireland. A professorly, academic, knowledgeable looking bird. In his performance imagining this bird, Garrett creates a voice for the Heron. The collective nouns for the Grey Heron are flight, sedge, sege, glean, station, siege. In Irish mythology Heron and Crane are guardians of the treasures of the Otherworld. Herons are, on occasion, still referred to as Cranes in Ireland. Although they are a big, tall bird they are deceptively light in weight. Heron comes from the French language, Héron Cendré. Garrett also talks about the Heronry in Bushy Park and how in the early twilight hours the forest can evoke an eerie prehistoric scene.     The GREYLAG GOOSE. Its name in the Irish Language is ‘Gé Ghlas’.  The Latin name is ‘ANSER ANSER. It is an AMBER LISTED bird in Ireland! The goose and Greylag were once revered across Eurasia. It is associated with Gula the godess of healing. In ancient Egypt geese symbolised the goddess of love, Aphrodite. They are a big big heavy bird. Males are bigger.     The PINTAIL. Its name in the Irish Language is ‘Biorearrach’.  The Latin name is ‘ANUS ACUTA’. It is a duck. It is an AMBER LISTED bird in Ireland! The duck is heavily associated with ancient greek mythology and the story of Icarus/Odysseus. The Pintail is a migratory bird to be seen here from October to March on marshlands. Also called a Northern Pintail.     GREENSHANK - TRINGA NEBULARIA

    The GREENSHANK. Its name in the Irish Language is ‘Laidhrín glas’.  The Latin name is ‘TRINGA NEBULARIA’. Although its cousin the Redshank is a red listed bird, the Greenhshank is a GREEN LISTED bird in Ireland. It is part of the Sandpiper family. This art work, in the form of imagined recordings were performed by Garrett from October 2023 - January 2024 in Millbrook Studios, Rathfarnham, Dublin. They were originally transmitted via an independent radio station HIDE FM during Spring 2025.
