The Nuh-Uh Moment feat. Brandon Messmer

You probably love it when you get a flash of insight that makes a lightbulb appear above your head. But, what about a flash of confusion that shatters your lightbulb into a crystalline dust cloud? In this episode, Jordan explores the health benefits of chaos. Just as a body requires physical struggle to grow stronger, a mind requires a certain amount of disruption to expand. Many philosophies and theories of mind realize there is a healthy balance to be struck between order and chaos. However, we live in a society increasingly made of order. We want things to be predictable, chartable, and manageable. By all means, Life, please don’t be scary! This is poppycock. Chaos needs to be embraced for the simple fact that it is real. The alternative is to increasingly live in denial with ever narrower minds and ever harder hearts. It’s time to be comfortable being uncomfortable. Along with new acquaintance Brandon Messmer, Jordan weaves in and out of chaos and order, exposing how we learn new things and the import of doing so. If we all start having more Nuh-Uh moments, we just might become the change we wish to see in the world. Select a Game to Play – Featuring Mikey Gordon and Lucia Carol

What color is your parachute? If it's slowly being eaten by moths, who gives a f**k? In this episode, Jordan explores the strange, seldom questioned rule-set imposed on our lives by American society. Most Americans, and a vast majority of global citizens, fail to ponder the rules of the games they play. In fact, most of them don't believe they're playing a game at all. They have accepted compulsory school, a forty hour work week, and a minimum retirement age as if they were laws of nature. But, there are those among us who see life in a different way. They make their own kind of music. Jordan attempts to see the world through the eyes of two bad-ass, free spirits, Mikey Gordon and Lucia Carol. Mikey and Lucia are comedians and professional wrestlers. They live life like they're ten feet tall and bulletproof. By temporarily adopting their perspective, Jordan hopes to better understand the absurdity of the old guard, American way and perhaps get a better handle on his own parachute. 3. The Language of Love

    12/24/2016

    The Language of Love

What is love? Baby, don’t use English. In this episode, Jordan explores how language interacts with thought. By studying linguistics, he discovers that there are limits imposed on our minds by the language and culture we inherit at birth. However, if we study other languages, we can expand not only our vernacular, but our interaction with reality itself. Jordan seeks discover and learn new words for LOVE by enlisting the help of his friend Jimmy Lopez. The source material for this episode was the article “The Ancient Greeks’ 6 Words for Love (And Why Knowing Them Can Change Your Life)” by Roman Krznaric. The Greek words discussed are listed here for quick reference: EROS - a dangerous, fiery, and irrational form of love that represents the idea of sexual passion and desire. PHILIA - deep friendship, or deep camaraderie that develops between brothers in arms who fight side by side on the battlefield. LUDUS - playful love, exhibited by affection between children, dancing strangers, laughing with friends, or other kinds of adult frivolity. AGAPE - selfless love extending to all people, whether family members or distant strangers. PRAGMA - longstanding, mature love exhibited by a relationship that works over time and shows patience and tolerance. PHILAUTIA - self-love. The idea that if you like yourself and feel secure in yourself you will have a wider capacity to love others. "The Enemy Within" featuring Khadija Bazzi Hamdar

It’s election time in America and that means a boogeyman is waiting ‘round e’ry corner. You’re not safe! There are enemies within! But Jordan doesn’t buy into this fear-mongering and neither should you. We’re not saying there is no “enemy within”, instead, we attempt to unmask the real enemy. Jordan takes a stroll down memory lane, remembering a time when violence and uncertainty reached new heights in his community. Storytelling and revelation abound. However, Jordan cannot expose the true enemy all by his lonesome. He is joined by Khadija Bazzi Hamdar, creator and host of the podcast: A Muslim Pearl in a Western Shell. With Khadija’s help, Jordan gets down to brass tacks. They gain ground against the enemy via discourse and respect. But have they exposed enough? Does a deeper, more obfuscated enemy still hide within? This episode attempts to reduce the political circus into a palatable, actionable consommé. 5. The Tao of Pokemon Go

    The Tao of Pokemon Go

Augmented Reality!!! New technology combined with pioneering imagination has birthed a new paradigm for the human experience. We now have the ability to augment our reality in a truly immersive way. The hit video game, Pokemon Go, has taken our world by storm. But with so many Psyducks to catch and so little time, few people are asking themselves: what does it all mean? Fortunately, these subjects were explored long before the technological leaps made AR and VR tangible, practical things. In this episode, we dive into a literary movement dubbed transrealism. Jordan explores the work of Rudy Rucker, the author of the Transrealist Manifesto, with the hope of making sense of the inventible convergence of human beings and digital realities. However, Jordan does not explore these uncharted waters alone. Instead, he enlists the help of Tony Heman, an old childhood friend and Pokemon Go aficionado. Jordan and Tony discuss the dualistic promise of AR, Transrealism in literature and philosophy, as well as some of the technical points of mobile gaming. Armed with the information gleaned from this discussion, Jordan wraps things up with a mental exercise for the High Files audience. This episode’s wisdom nuggets are provided by Rudy Rucker and Terrence McKenna. (NOTE: We apologize for varying audio quality during some parts of this episode. 13: The Psychedelic Experience

Magic Mushrooms!!! In this episode, Jordan embarks on an in-depth analysis of the Psychedelic Experience with some help from some recently reacquainted fungal friends. The utmost care and preparation was exercised during this investigation. One of the most important precautions to take for any Psychedelic Experience is to have a trip sitter. Jordan decided to keep things in the Onyx Edge family by linking up with Chris from On The Road With ThorHammer for this adventure. Chris plays the role of sitter while Jordan is blasted off into a metaphysical wonderland. However, this was not familiar territory for Jordan, because it involved a much higher dose (though still not Heroic Level) than he had ever encountered before. Will it be boom or bust for this new sacrament? Grab your popcorn and strap in as we embark on a journey into the deepest and weirdest waters the High Files has explored to date. This episode’s wisdom nuggets are provided by William Shakespeare and Christ. (NOTE: We apologize for varying audio quality during some parts of this episode, but we felt it was more important to be comfortable and centered during the experience with audio being a secondary concern.)
