Part One - Buts
In 1934, Elizabeth “Buts” Wyland is a young girl living in Alabama with her abusive aunt and uncle. Her only companion is Missus Bestfriend, who lives in a coffee can. Everything changes when she enlists the help of two hobos: a self-ordained wandering monk and a kid-hating gadabout to escape to find her parents in California. Meanwhile, in 2008, an elderly “Buts” is preparing to leave the home her husband built and move into assisted living.

Part Two - Gadabout Jack
In 1934, Buts and Brother Isaac grow closer, driving a wedge between Isaac and his traveling partner Gadabout Jack. When Missus Bestfriend’s magical powers are revealed, the three come to a crossroads. Meanwhile in 1957, an older, beaten-down Gadabout Jack is invited to sing at a recording studio eager to capitalize on the recent folk revival.

In 1929, Nick Fanning, a Wall Street stockbroker on the rise, longs for affection from his aristocratic parents but would gladly settle for acceptance. He gets neither from them but finds the potential for both in a chance meeting with a young bohemian playwright named GW Harwood.

Folksy grit meets magical realism
What a beautiful journey this was. The writing is grounded, relatable and ethereal all at once. The honesty and specificity from the performances and high production quality plant the listener firmly in medias res. The music deserves a spot on the cast list as a character all its own. Hobo Code wails into the wind that resilience is a journey, not a destination--a process, not an outcome. Cannot recommend highly enough.
