Re: Trade Deadline (PS: Awesome Show!!)

Just wanted to say this is one of my favorite NBA pods, and that’s saying a ton considering I listen to over 20 easily. So much awesome info and great perspectives.

For LAL trading for Rose, you guys decided (mostly) that Kuzma for Rose is too much. Detroit isn’t trading Svi, Galloway is too much salary. What about Rose and Markieff Morris? Morris is making $3.2M this year, PO for $3.36M next year. I don’t see a no trade clause on his name on Spotrac, so I assume he can be traded.

Markieff obviously isn’t his brother, or RoCo, etc, but he’s a big body on a cheap contract and can stretch the floor. He’s shooting 40.4% from 3 on 4.3 attempts this year in 39 games. 22.4MPG. He’s 6”8 (w/o shoes) w/ 6”11 wingspan. Small sample, but it seems he’s become an improved 3P shooter since the PHX days. I’m sure he can at least hit open 3s at a high enough clip, higher than Crowder, and he provides a big body. Could be something to sweeten the pot a bit and make the Kuzma for Rose trade more palatable for LAL as it sort of gives them two things they need going forward.

Also the Lakers would help relieve some tax issues for DET as they’re so close to the tax line. Kuzma + Cook + a vet minimum would be enough as far as I know, haven’t looked, but I know it’d be close enough where they could make it happen.

So:

LAL receives: D-Rose & Markieff Morris

DET receives: Kuzma + Cook + another veteran minimum type contract to make the $ work. DET was granted the DPE for Blake and have a $2.5M trade exception, not sure if those could help in a trade like this if it ended up being a 3 team trade or something. But ya just thought I’d mention Markieff in that Kuzma Rose trade as a piece that could make it work.

As a Detroit fan, it would just be acquiring as much young talent as possible for our rebuild. We’ll likely just have to wait until Blake’s contract expires, but we can still move forward with Kennard, Sekou, Svi, Bruce Brown, Kuzma, and our future draft picks. Hopefully we can get rid of Drummond even if it’s just for a couple 2nds, I just don’t want us to re sign him.

But I can see Sekou playing small ball 5, Kuzma at the 4, then Svi and Bruce Brown as young guys with potential, same w Christian Wood. But the rebuild would mainly be around Sekou/Kuzma/Kennard, and then hopefully we draft a very good starting caliber PG or SF in the draft. It’d be a good start.

And if Kuzma doesn’t work out, we can always trade him and get something for him next season. It’s not like losing Rose and Morris is a big loss. It’s not like we want to win games this year anyway. But Kuzma would have a change of scenery and he’d have the role as a high volume scorer, and a starter. I think that’d give him the best chance to develop his skills, because I don’t think LA is a great situation for him.

Thanks again guys and sorry for the long message!
