Send us a text Episode 24 is live! With me today is Jeffrey Yorio, author of several works of flash fiction and poetry as well as the vampire inspired horror fiction series Sundowners. In this episode, we discuss the first book in the series, Sundowners: Vampires are Only Human. Released in 2020 and set primarily in present day society, the novel tracks a development in the power structure amongst two vampire factions who, at the beginning of the novel, enjoy an uneasy truce. The strange disappearance of a major player disturbs the already shaky foundation of this truce, as both factions desperately race to find out what has happened. Episode 23: Raphael Hernandez--The Cemi and the Legends of the Taino

Send us a text Episode 23 is upon us! With me today is Raphael Hernandez, author of the novel The Cemi and the Legends of the Taino. The novel weaves together two distinct narratives. The first follows a family from Chicago visiting their grandmother in Puerto Rico. During their stay, they explore their grandmothers “finca,” or farm, witnessing the cultivation of Yuca and coffee, the unique geography of the area, and the associated changes the modern world has introduced. During a stormy night, and subsequent loss of electricity, their grandmother Dona Maria, along with other family friends, share stories of Taino mythology with the children. Alexandra, a teenage girl with a focused interest in anthropology, takes particular interest in these tales. The second narrative consists of a retelling of fragments of Taino mythology from the Caribbean, specifically Puerto Rico, each linked with a particular experience of the visiting family. Join us as we discuss the importance of myth, environmental stewardship, and a bit of MCU-adjacent madness.

All these works of literature are now quite well known, some on the border of being cultural phenomena. Both The Martian and 50 Shades of Grey have adapted into highly successful motion pictures. Milk and Honey, Kaur’s collection of poetry and abstract fiction, has sold over 3 million copies. Redfield’s The Celestine Prophecy has been translated into over 30 languages.
