Ep. 6 - Radiation Therapy: Myths, Facts, and What Really Happens

Radiation therapy has a reputation it no longer deserves. When someone hears they “need radiation,” the mind jumps to worst-case stories, dramatic machines, and side effects that feel inevitable. We wanted the facts, so we sat down with Julie Maday, radiology clinic manager at Highlands Oncology, to translate the process into plain language and calm some of the fear that shows up the moment people start Googling. We talk through the difference between radiology and radiation, why imaging like CT scans and MRIs is the backbone of cancer care, and how radiation treatment has become incredibly site-specific. Julie explains what the linear accelerator is actually like, what patients typically feel during treatment, and why the first visit is often a planning CT rather than “day one.” We also dig into the hidden precision work: dosimetrists building custom plans, physicists verifying accuracy, and therapists using daily X-rays to align treatment within millimeters. Beyond the technology, we spend time on the human side of cancer treatment. Julie shares how anxiety and anger can peak before the first session, how therapists support patients through humor and steady routines, and why protecting independence can be just as important as comfort. We also answer a question we hear all the time: after external beam radiation therapy, are you radioactive, can you hug your family, and what does “radioactive” even mean? If this helped you, subscribe so you don’t miss future conversations, share it with someone facing radiation therapy, and leave a review to help more people find Hope Unscripted. What question about radiation or cancer screening do you want us to tackle next?

Ep. 5 - Nicotine Addiction: Why Your Brain Can’t Let Go with Leisha Atwood

If you’ve ever thought “Why can’t I just stop?” this conversation puts real words to what your brain and body are doing and how to work with it instead of fighting blind. Brittnee sits down with Leisha Atwood, Hope Cancer Resources’ nationally certified tobacco treatment specialist, to talk about what tobacco addiction actually is, why cravings can feel immediate, and how people move from stuck to steady progress. We get into the science of nicotine dependence, including how nicotine can hit the brain in seconds and activate the reward pathway. From there, we zoom out to the everyday reality: vaping can be harder to quit because it’s easy to use constantly, often without noticing how much. We also unpack smokeless tobacco and nicotine pouches, why higher nicotine levels can raise dependence, and why “you can’t even smell it” sometimes makes the habit easier to hide and harder to break. We also connect the dots between tobacco and cancer prevention, cancer treatment, and healing. Leisha explains why tobacco use can affect energy, breathing, immune function, and even surgical timelines when someone is told they must quit before an operation. Most importantly, we talk about shame, relapse, and the very normal reality that many people need multiple quit attempts before it sticks, plus the practical support that helps: weekly coaching, trigger planning, coping skills, and nicotine replacement therapy options. If you or someone you love wants to quit smoking, quit vaping, or quit smokeless tobacco, listen now and share this with a friend who needs it. Subscribe, leave a review, and tell us what trigger you want help tackling next.

Ep. 4 - Silent Pressure: What Caregivers Rarely Say Out Loud

Caregiving can look calm on the outside and still feel like turbulence on the inside. We sit down with Charlotte Bayala and Hope Cancer Resources case manager Kaitlyn Voss to tell the truth about cancer caregiving: the roller coaster stretches of normal life, the steep climbs into scan-related fear, and the quiet moments where you realize you’re carrying more than anyone can see. We talk about what caregivers rarely say out loud, including exhaustion, loneliness, anticipatory grief, and the shame that shows up when you feel burnt out even though you’re not the one with the diagnosis. Charlotte shares what helped her after years of caregiving, from shrinking her circle to the people who can truly hold space, to learning that “no” is a complete sentence when someone brings unhelpful advice or makes your news about their feelings. Caitlin adds what she sees every day, including common caregiver burnout signs and why validation can be the first step toward real support. You’ll also hear what meaningful support actually looks like, not vague offers, but specific help like rides, grocery runs, childcare, sitting in the waiting room, or even a well-timed meme that keeps connection alive without demanding energy. We highlight caregiver resources, counseling, and emotional support options that give caregivers a safe place to process and breathe. If you’re caring for someone with cancer or you love someone who is, press play, share this with a friend, and subscribe for more. After you listen, tell us, what kind of support would make the biggest difference for you right now?

Ep. 3 - Scanxiety: What to Do With the Fear That Shows Up Before Every Scan

The week before a cancer scan can turn normal life into a maze of what-ifs. We invited caregiver advocate and longtime yoga and meditation teacher Charlotte to help us name that feeling, scanxiety, and show how small, doable tools can make the waiting less punishing. Her story begins with a phone call that upended her routines, even as she taught others how to manage stress. That tension led her to build practical support for caregivers who don’t have bandwidth for elaborate self-care but still need real relief. We dig into what scanxiety looks like for patients and families: snappier moods, foggy focus, and a body convinced danger is near. Charlotte explains why history shapes every appointment and how validating feelings reduces shame and friction at home. Instead of vague “Let me know what you need,” we share specific support that helps, scheduled meals without the drop-in, a lawn mowed, a morning walk, a quick text that says “I know this week is heavy.” These small choices remove decision fatigue and restore a sense of control when so much feels uncertain. Then we get tactical with breath work. Charlotte breaks down how a longer exhale signals safety through the vagus nerve and shifts the nervous system out of fight-or-flight. No mat, no app required, just one minute in a parked car, a clinic bathroom, or a quiet corner of the waiting room. Eyes open or closed, four counts in and six out, or even a deliberate sigh. Skeptical? Bodies often soften before minds agree. Those brief resets don’t erase the stakes, but they create steady ground for the moments that matter most. We close with a direct word for anyone facing scans tomorrow: you deserve a pause, a breath, and acknowledgment that you’re doing something incredibly hard. For more short, guided practices, check out Charlotte’s Caregiver Breathing Room and The Cancer Caregiver. If this conversation helped, share it with someone waiting on results, hit follow, and leave a quick review so others can find real tools and real hope. Ep. 2 - Nobody Told Me Exercise Could Help During Cancer Treatment. Here's What to Know

What if cancer prevention didn’t mean a drastic life overhaul, but a handful of small choices you can actually keep? We sit down with Hannah, our wellness manager and certified personal trainer with a master’s in nutrition, to unpack practical steps that make a real difference: no guilt, no gimmicks, just habits that fit your life. We walk through how she personalizes full‑body training for people at every stage of the cancer journey, from diagnosis to remission, and why caregivers benefit when they move alongside their loved ones. Hannah shares simple at‑home starters, 15 to 30 minutes of walking, balance and core basics, and explains how small, consistent actions rebuild strength for everyday tasks like stairs, standing up, and playing with kids. On the nutrition side, she goes beyond buzzwords to a single, sticky rule: flip the label and aim for under 5% Daily Value for added sugar. From protein‑smart breakfasts to serving size sanity checks, she turns “healthy confusion” into clear choices. Whole‑person health threads through every topic: how stress and poor sleep can drain immunity, how quick guided meditations help reset the nervous system, and why support groups create empathy that fuels better follow‑through. We also dig into prevention must‑knows: age‑appropriate screenings like mammograms at 40 and colonoscopies at 45 (earlier with risk), tobacco cessation resources, and real‑world sun safety. SPF 30 daily matters year‑round, even through clouds and car windows, especially for ears, hands, and that driver’s arm, and UV clothing can make long days outside safer and easier. If you’ve felt overwhelmed by wellness advice, this conversation brings it back to earth: choose one habit, repeat it, and let momentum build. Plus, don’t miss our free skin cancer screening on April 28 from 6–8 pm: quick checks by dermatologists and an easy win for your prevention checklist. If you found this helpful, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a review to help more people find practical tools and real hope.

Ep. 1 - The First Call You Should Make After a Cancer Diagnosis

What if the most powerful cancer support starts before you set foot in a clinic? We launched Hope Unscripted on World Cancer Day to share a straightforward promise: we’ll be your first stop for clear guidance, practical help, and steady human support through every step of the cancer journey. Chuck Hyde, our CEO, opens up about the mission that drives him, the personal losses that shaped his resolve, and the simple systems that make a life-changing difference: rides that show up, gas cards that bridge the gap, gym coaching that builds strength, and counselors who help families breathe again. We get specific about whole health and why it matters. Cancer care doesn’t end with a prescription; it begins with access and continues with adherence. Our eight-van fleet runs more than 30,000 miles a month so patients don’t miss appointments. Our team helps with medications, dental referrals impacted by treatment, tobacco cessation, and support groups for both patients and caregivers. We walk through education and prevention with the same clarity, from sun safety and reading sunscreen labels to annual skin cancer screenings that catch problems earlier and improve outcomes. The aim is practical: reduce risk where we can, detect sooner when possible, and surround treatment with tools that work in real life. Northwest Arkansas is growing fast, and cancer cases are growing with it. Today there are tens of thousands of active patients in the region; tomorrow there will be more. Not everyone needs everything, but most people need one timely answer; transport, counseling, a class, or a warm handoff to a partner. That’s why our website leads with two doors: I need help or I want to help. Whether you’re looking for support or ready to volunteer, donate, or contribute in-kind to our care closet, there’s a clear path to jump in. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more people can find their first stop for cancer support.
