Why Doesn't My Child Listen to Me?

Welcome to Hot Topics! In this episode, host Gabrielle Crichlow and guest Dr. David Marcus tackle the common frustrations parents face when their children seem unresponsive. They explore the underlying reasons for this disconnect, including developmental stages, communication styles, and emotional needs. Additionally, they provide actionable strategies to help parents improve their communication skills. Listeners will learn how to foster a more open dialogue, develop a common emotional language, utilize active listening techniques, and create a supportive environment that strengthens family connections. Who is Dr. David Marcus? In today’s challenging world, parents require new tools to help their children develop a healthy self-image and emotional resilience. Many still use parenting techniques from their own upbringing, which often do not apply to current issues like the impact of social media, financial stress, and the challenges of dual-income households. Dr. David Marcus, a Clinical Psychologist with over 40 years of experience, offers valuable insights into developing effective emotional communication between parents and children. He provides step-by-step strategies tailored for various stages of child development, focusing on how to help parents create a common emotional language, tolerate intense emotions through the “empty-out process,” and serve as a “Soothing Presence” for their children. Additionally, he discusses avoiding common parenting mistakes, understanding the emotional impact of high-conflict situations, and distinguishing effective discipline from punishment, making him a sought-after resource in the Cincinnati area on parent-child communication and child advocacy.
