Land, Power, and the Plate: Ending Food Apartheid with Regenerative Justice

Many communities face an uneven food landscape: plenty of cheap junk food, but few places to buy fresh, healthy food. This pattern—often called “food apartheid”—doesn’t happen by accident; it grows from redlining, unfair rules, and corporate control. The impacts are steep: higher rates of type 2 diabetes, kidney failure, and learning problems in Black, Latino, and Indigenous communities, along with unsafe conditions for farmworkers. These harms have a long history, and government subsidies and convincing marketing keep ultraprocessed foods on top. However, we take practical steps to make change including investing in regenerative and community farms, protecting and fairly paying farmworkers, and enforcing civil-rights laws so public dollars support real food, healthy soil, and communities that thrive. In this episode, Leah Penniman, Dr. Rupa Marya, Raj Patel, Karen Washington, and I discuss why food injustices exist and how we can create regenerative food systems to serve everyone. Leah Penniman is a Black Kreyol educator, farmer/peyizan, author, and food justice activist from Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, NY. She co-founded Soul Fire Farm in 2010 with the mission to end racism in the food system and reclaim our ancestral connection to land. As co-Executive Director, Leah is part of a team that facilitates powerful food sovereignty programs - including farmer training for Black & Brown people, a subsidized farm food distribution program for communities living under food apartheid, and domestic and international organizing toward equity in the food system. Leah has been farming since 1996, holds an MA in Education and a BA in Environmental Science from Clark University, and is a Manye (Queen Mother) in Vodun.  Dr. Rupa Marya is a physician, activist, mother, and composer. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco where she practices and teaches Internal Medicine. Her research examines the health impacts of social systems, from agriculture to policing. She is a co-founder of the Do No Harm Coalition, a collective of health workers committed to addressing disease through structural change. At the invitation of Lakota health leaders, she is currently helping to set up the Mni Wiconi Health Clinic and Farm at Standing Rock in order to decolonize medicine and food.  Raj Patel is a Research Professor at the University of Texas at Austin’s Lyndon B Johnson School of Public Affairs, a professor in the University’s department of nutrition, and a Research Associate at Rhodes University, South Africa. He is the author of Stuffed and Starved, the New York Times bestselling The Value of Nothing, co-author of A History of the World in Seven Cheap Things. A James Beard Leadership Award winner, he is the co-director of the award-winning documentary about climate change and the food system, The Ants & The Grasshopper.  Karen is a farmer, activist, and food advocate. She is the Co-owner and Farmer at Rise & Root Farm in Chester, New York. In 2010, Karen Co-Founded Black Urban Growers (BUGS), an organization supporting growers in both urban and rural settings. In 2012, Ebony magazine voted her one of the 100 most influential African Americans in the country, and in 2014 Karen was the recipient of the James Beard Leadership Award. Karen serves on the boards of the New York Botanical Gardens, SoulFire Farm, the Mary Mitchell Center, Why Hunger, and Farm School NYC. This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. Today we tackle Parkinson’s as a preventable epidemic—not an inevitable fate. I’m joined on The Dr. Hyman Show by two of the field’s top neurologists, Drs. Ray Dorsey and Michael Okun, co-authors of The Parkinson’s Plan, to unpack why cases are exploding and what we can do about it right now. We look at how toxins drive disease, why Parkinson’s goes far beyond dopamine, and the early signs most people miss—plus what you can do today to protect your brain. And we connect the dots between environmental exposures—whether from food, water, or even recreational spaces—and the growing burden of neurological disease. Watch the full conversation here or listen wherever you get your podcasts. [YOUTUBE THUMBNAIL] We also explore: • How to spot early signs—like loss of smell—long before a diagnosis • Everyday ways to cut toxin exposures in your food, water, and home • Why Parkinson’s is a whole-body disease, and what that means for prevention • The kind of exercise that protects your brain and slows progression • Simple nutrient checks that can support medication and brain health Parkinson’s isn’t inevitable. Protecting brain health starts with small daily choices. These are steps you can take right now for yourself and your loved ones. With awareness and action, you can build resilience today and help shape a healthier future. Foods and Habits That Keep Your Immune System Resilient

Our immune systems are under more pressure than ever—from processed diets, environmental toxins, stress, and fast-spreading infections—and the result is faster aging and greater vulnerability to disease. As we grow older, “zombie cells” spread inflammation throughout the body, weakening defenses and accelerating decline. But research shows we’re not powerless: the emerging science of immuno-rejuvenation reveals that we can retrain and rebuild our immunity. Through the right foods, lifestyle habits, and even strategic stressors, the body has hidden pathways for repair and renewal—offering clues to how we might slow aging and unlock greater resilience. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Dr. Roger Seheult, how we can support the immune system by using food, lifestyle, and hormetic stress to reduce illness and restore resilience while slowing aging. Dr. Elizabeth Boham is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Albany Medical School, and she is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and the Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Boham lectures on a variety of topics, including Women’s Health and Breast Cancer Prevention, insulin resistance, heart health, weight control and allergies. She is on the faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine. Dr. Roger Seheult is currently an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine, and an Assistant Clinical Professor at the School of Medicine and Allied Health at Loma Linda University. Dr. Seheult is quadruple board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, Critical Care Medicine, and Sleep Medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine. His current practice is in Banning, California where he is a critical care physician, pulmonologist, and sleep physician at Beaver Medical Group.  He was formerly the Director for Intensive Care Services at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital.  He lectures routinely across the country at conferences and for medical, PA, and RT societies. Dr. Seheult is also the Co-founder of MedCram, an online medical education company that helps healthcare professionals and also lay people understand medical topics clearly. Obesity is often seen as a matter of willpower, but science tells a different story. My guest today, Dr. David Kessler—former FDA commissioner, lawyer, physician, and the man who took on Big Tobacco—explains why biology, not blame, drives our struggles with weight. On this episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, we talk about why weight struggles are so common today, what new drugs can and can’t do, and how his new FDA petition targets one of the biggest culprits: processed refined carbs. Catch the full conversation on YouTube, or listen wherever you get your podcasts. From Fatigue to Freedom: Healing the Thyroid Beyond Lab Tests

Thyroid trouble often starts as a whisper—tiredness, stubborn weight, dry skin—until a closer look shows the tiny neck gland that sets the body’s “speed” is out of tune. Basic tests can miss the real issue, so checking active hormones and thyroid antibodies—and hunting for triggers like stress, gluten sensitivity, toxins, nutrient gaps, and gut imbalances—can reveal what’s really going on. When understood this way, thyroid health is no longer just about numbers on a lab report—it’s about restoring balance in the whole system. With the right testing, nutrition, and support, energy, mood, and metabolism can all return to their natural rhythm. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Dr. George Papanicolaou, thyroid conditions such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid autoimmunity and how Functional Medicine practitioners take a different approach to find the root cause of the imbalance. Dr. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive personal care, Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. In August 2017, I invited Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center and we’ve been successfully helping people together ever since. This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. Fix Your Brain by Fixing Your Body: Metabolic Psychiatry Explained by Dr. Shebani Sethi

For too long, psychiatry has treated mental illness as if it lives only in the brain. But what if the real story begins in the body? My guest today, Dr. Shebani Sethi, is a Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford and founding director of the Metabolic Psychiatry Program, the first clinic to unite psychiatry with nutrition and metabolism. On this revealing episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, we explore how shifts in metabolism affect the brain and why this whole-body lens could transform how we prevent, understand, and treat mental health. Watch the full conversation on YouTube, or listen wherever you get your podcasts. We discuss: • How to recognize metabolic red flags behind mood and focus • Tests you can ask for to uncover hidden drivers of mental health • Everyday steps to restore brain energy and resilience • Foods and nutrients that calm inflammation and support cognition Dr. Shebani Sethi coined the term Metabolic Psychiatry, capturing what I’ve long believed and explored: that mental health begins in the body. Embracing this shift could reshape how we treat the mind and how we live each day. How a Sense of Purpose Changes Your Brain, Body, and Future

Many people feel caught in worry, fear, and constant striving—chasing achievements yet never feeling truly fulfilled. The restless “monkey mind” jumps from one thing to the next, amplifying stress and turning setbacks into heavy burdens. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. You can move from mindless tasks to a mindful purpose. The shift begins by setting a clear, heartfelt intention rooted in something bigger. When the focus moves from self-gain to contribution, the right people, resources, and opportunities often begin to flow toward you.  In this episode, Reverend Michael Beckwith, Lynne Twist, Jay Shetty, and I talk about how shifting from fear and self-focus to living with intention, surrender, daily spiritual practices, and a purpose larger than oneself can transform challenges into growth, bring deeper fulfillment, and open unexpected opportunities. For over 30 years now, Reverend Michael Beckwith has embraced a practical approach to spirituality and has helped people see the benefits of meditation, affirmative prayer, and life visioning, a process he originated. He has spoken at the United Nations, hosted conferences featuring some of the top thinkers and leaders in a variety of industries, and he is also the founder of the Global Association for New Thought. He is a teacher, a speaker, and the author of several books. He has shared his insights on a number of well-known television programs, such as Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday, Dr. Oz, Larry King Live, CNN, Tavis Smiley, and others. Lynne Twist has spent over 40 years working with more than 100,000 people in 50 countries in the realms of fundraising with integrity, conscious philanthropy, strategic visioning, and cultivating a healthy relationship with money. A renowned author and speaker, she has presented at the United Nations Beijing Women’s Conference, State of the World Forum, Synthesis Dialogues with Dalai Lama, and the Governor’s Conference on California Women. Recognized as a global visionary, Lynne has advised the Desmond Tutu Foundation and the Nobel Women’s Initiative. She co-founded the Pachamama Alliance, a nonprofit empowering Indigenous people of the Amazon rainforest to preserve their lands and culture. From serving with Mother Teresa in Calcutta to aiding refugee camps in Ethiopia and protecting the Amazon, her on-the-ground work has given her profound insight into the social fabric of the world and the defining challenges of our time. Jay Shetty is a storyteller, podcaster, and former monk. Jay’s vision is to Make Wisdom Go Viral. He is on a mission to share the timeless wisdom of the world in an accessible, relevant, and practical way. Jay has created over 400 viral videos with over 7.5 billion views, and hosts the #1 Health and Wellness podcast in the world, On Purpose. This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers.
