An ordinary moment can reveal a much bigger story. A café conversation, a local tradition, or a baffling piece of paperwork—life in Mediterranean Spain gives me plenty to wonder about. Why do things work this way? What shaped them? And why does something familiar to one person feel strange to another? I’m Robbie Ellestad, also known as Oddly Robbie. After living in 22 places around the world in three years, I’m staying long enough to look more closely. Human Systems follows the connections between everyday life, culture, technology, history, and human behaviour. Personal observations, better questions, and the occasional “ah, now I see it” moment. Rooted in Spain. Curious about everywhere. This is an independent personal hobby. I don’t accept donations, sponsorships, paid promotions, or other compensation.

The Sound Stops. The Listening Doesn't.

The Sound Stops. The Listening Doesn’t. Human Systems | Oddly Robbie Why can a loud thunderstorm feel comforting while a quiet sound through the wall keeps you awake? Sometimes it isn't the volume that bothers us. It's the anticipation. The waiting. The part of our attention that stays on duty long after the sound has stopped. From rainy days on Spain's Costa del Sol to a motorcycle revving in a garage, I explore how everyday sounds affect my attention—and how small adjustments can make a surprising difference. I've also been experimenting with Guardian, my personal AI system, using a microphone, a small computer, and sound masking to create a more comfortable environment at home. Along the way, I consider Spain's new disability and dependency legislation, which recognizes the potential of AI, home automation, and robotics to support independent living. But this episode isn't really about technology. It's about having more control over how we experience the world, without shutting the world out. Sometimes the most useful solution is remarkably simple. For me, it was a quiet fan sound. And I went back to sleep. Pre-school Jitters

I’ve been through much tighter pinches than a community painting class. Even so, unfamiliar expectations and imperfect Spanish gave my brain plenty of unknowns to rehearse. The actual class brought an open workshop, a jug to draw, helpful advice and an awkward conversation. I’m clearly no Picasso, and my Spanish isn’t ready for an announcer’s microphone—but the drawings were improving. From a first class in Spain to the wider experience of entering an unfamiliar community, this episode explores how we find a way to participate—and why one uncomfortable exchange doesn’t have to sum up the whole experience. The Price of Lunch: Bottlenecks and Better Backups

A few favourite foods cost a little more, and I find myself thinking about the long systems behind an ordinary lunch. I haven't traced the price rises in my shopping basket, but they open a question: what happens when one part of a system gets too narrow? From maritime chokepoints to electric-car charging, green hydrogen in Andalucía, AI data centres and the journey of a tomato, this episode explores how fixing one bottleneck can reveal another. Building the pieces is one task; having them ready to work together is another. Then there's the question of backups. Two suppliers may still depend on the same factory. Spare capacity can look expensive until we need it. Could AI help us notice these dependencies, compare alternatives and question assumptions—while people make the decisions? An everyday look at bottlenecks, resilience and keeping another workable path available. More observations, essays, and unexpected connections on the blog: OddlyRobbie.eu

The Power Went Out for a Minute

A one-minute power cut in my apartment in Mediterranean Spain got me thinking about someone I haven’t met yet: eighty-year-old Robbie. What would I want from a home that helps me stay independent? What should it know, what should it keep private—and what happens when the electricity goes off? Starting with a few sensors and my Guardian project, I explore local AI, getting older, and the everyday jobs technology might make easier while leaving room for human care. There’s also a trip to Stockholm on the horizon, and a very firm position on vacuuming during siesta. My vacuum cleaner does not need Stockholm. And Stockholm does not need my nap schedule. A New Season: The World from Here

Season 5 begins from a different place. After years of moving through different countries, systems, technologies, and ways of living, I’m looking less at how to get around and more at the patterns underneath everyday life. Why does the same action mean something different in another culture? What do classrooms, cafés, paperwork, money, technology, music, and community reveal about the systems we live inside? This season starts with ordinary moments and follows them outward. One café doesn’t explain Spain. Spain doesn’t explain Europe. And I’ll probably revise some of my conclusions along the way. That’s part of the point. Same Oddly Robbie. A different place to look from. A podcast about people, places, technology, and the patterns in between. When Loss Arrives Later

Some losses do not arrive with one clear ending. A person may still be alive but distant or unreachable, and the weight of that change can take time to become emotionally real. In this episode, I reflect on ambiguous loss, delayed grief, and the way loss can arrive in groups or clusters: relationships, routines, belonging, and futures we expected. For some autistic people, difficult news arrives in two parts—facts first, emotional meaning later. This is not about forcing repair or closure. It is an invitation to recognise what has changed, make room for grief, and meet one another with patience.

When Belonging Requires Obedience, It Stops Being Support

Support is often described as care, loyalty, or being there for one another. But not all support functions the same way. Some forms of support help people become more themselves. Others quietly require obedience in exchange for belonging. In this episode, Oddly Robbie explores the difference between support and control through a Human Systems lens, examining how conditions, authority, belonging, and autonomy interact inside families, friendships, partnerships, communities, and even technology. Topics: • Support vs control • Chosen family and consent-based belonging • The cost of disagreement • Agency and autonomy • Healthy boundaries • Human Systems analysis Key insight: Support becomes safe when it increases agency.

    When Paperwork Leaves the Body

In this episode, I reflect on how legal status is not only administrative — it is embodied. Residency approval did not magically solve life. It removed a major uncertainty from my nervous system’s forecast. When the future of home is unclear, the body keeps running background questions: What if this does not work? What if we have to leave? What if the systems I escaped become relevant again? This episode looks at bureaucracy as nervous-system pressure, especially for neurodivergent people, queer people, immigrants, veterans, and anyone who has lived under systems that tried to correct or contain difference. The core Human Systems insight: Paperwork is not neutral when it controls housing, residency, medical access, family stability, or the right to remain in a safe environment. Legal stability changes the body’s threat model. When uncertainty clears, even a little, the body knows. The alarm attached to the paperwork begins to leave. Themes: - residency approval as a stability signal - bureaucracy and nervous-system load - home uncertainty and embodied safety - autism as human variation, not defect - the trauma of corrective systems - Costa del Sol as a regulating environment - sovereignty, safety, and the right to build a life Oddly Robbie explores Human Systems: how policies, cultures, technologies, and environments shape the body, attention, identity, and daily life.
