    Episode 60 - Dead Alive! (1992) - "Good Disgusting Fun"

    This week on the pod we’re heading down under (Kinda) for a continued discussion on Video Nasties (But, not really) as we watched a classic in both New Zealand film and splatter horror in Peter Jacksons (yes, THAT one) 1992 Horror Comedy, Dead Alive! Join us as we turn our brains off for a putrid good time. It’s a movie that you can see, smell, hear and taste from beginning to end, and you’ll surely want a second helping of this slop! Join us as we laud this as a great pick to put on at a party with your friends, if your friends like dismembered corpses that is. We speculate whether or not this is cannon with Jackson’s remake of King Kong and note more than just one allusion to inspiration from Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”. Also discussed, the slapstick “Muppet-ness” of the New Zealand sense of humor, timeless practical effects, and CAN you show hog on instagram?     Episode 59 - Faces of Death (1978) - "Gods Blooper Reel"

    I Didn’t Need To See That: Return of the Dadcast! After a month hiatus while Pete ascends to fatherhood, we’ve replenished our tanks, recharged our batteries and are ready to subject our pure, clean bodies back into the swamp. This month on the pod, we’re dusting off an old chestnut by billing a double header and finally delving into the topic of Video Nasties! What the hell is a video nasty? Exactly what it sounds like. We’re busting open this bag of guts with the movie so controversial it was banned in 46 countries, 1978’s “Faces of Death”. Join us as we ask ourselves, “where does faces of death fit into a modern world?”. Is it rendered obsolete by the onslaught of dead bodies we can see on the internet, or does it serve as a macabre predecessor of something kids of a certain generation have become all too desensitized towards. Also discussed on today’s episode; horny spam texts, how to survive in a scam economy, and the joys of fatherhood.     Episode 58 - Kids (1995) - "Summer Lovin', Got Me Some AIDS"

    Youth is wasted on the young, especially when the youth is too wasted to remember what the hell happened. This week on the pod, we’re closing out Bummer Summer with the granddaddy of cautionary tales to the restless youth of America with Larry Clark’s 1995 film “Kids”. Join us as we revel in the horror of what it’s like to experience this film through the lens of adults and reminisce on our own teenage f*****y. We’ll cover the very messy and questionable production history of this film and how the final product feels at once a true authentic representation of teens in America, and outright exploitation of those same teens. It’s a mixed bag to say the least. Also discussed in today’s episode; Just how much sex are teens actually having, separating the nostalgia from the child pornography, and is there really any ethical way to depict teens as they truly are?     Episode 57 - Requiem For A Dream (2000) - "Heroin Rules Everything Around Me"

    This week, bring the tissues and some Narcan because we’re about to overdose on sadness. This week we’re watching everyone’s favorite anti-drug PSA via way of Darren Aronofsky with his 2000 dram “Requiem for a Dream”. Join as Pete dives down memory lane with his first encounter with a movie that was so bleak it made him want to take a shower, and Aaron comes at this without the fondness of 2000’s filmmaking style. While we may not be able to agree on whether or not the film still works for a modern audience, we can absolutely agree on a few things. The score absolutely holds up, Marlon Wayans is way too ripped to play a drug addict, and there’s no such thing as a fun heroin movie. It also goes without saying that no matter what our feelings on this movie are, this is a film whose imprint can be felt on cinema even to this day. Plus, Spoilers for the new film “Eddington”, learn that James Gunn gives a shit about us, and sometimes people need to be in a psyche ward. Get ready because this one’s a sad one!     Episode 56 - Stroszek (1977) - "Vintage Midwestern Sprawl"

    This week on the pod, we’re heading overseas to bleak, cold world of Berlin in the 1970’s; but only for a moment before we break free to the sunny shores of… Wisconsin! Yes we’re continuing our mini-theme on breaking the facade of the American dream, only this time through the eyes of an immigrant seeking better opportunities and cheaper beer in the 1977 film; Stroszek. On today’s episode, we talk briefly about how Stroszek, and last week’s film “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” are in conversation with one another; and while in this film the American dream isn’t literally breaking your body, it sure is going to break your spirit. Try as our beloved, drunken main character might; once you’ve got a single knock against you in this life, it’s nearly impossible to get yourself back up. Also discussed today, our first time coverage of a Werner Herzog film, the endless mirroring of our main character as a prototype of Charlie Kelly, and good ol’ vintage, midwestern sprawl.     Episode 54 - Happiness (1998) - "Happiness is a Warm C*m"

    This week on the pod, The pursuit of happiness is all full of crooks, perverts and pedophiles as we continue our seasonal slog of Bummer Summer with a very special film about family. We learn just how dark a comedy can get as we watched Todd Solondz’s 1998 “semenal” film, “Happiness”. Join us as we foray into the first Todd Solondz film for the podcast and contextualize just what makes this director a perfect contender for the podcast. One of the strongest attributes of the film is just how un-PC it is, yet how Solondz navigates the tone so deftly as to give us reprehensible yeet very human characters. After all, aren’t we all just a bunch of perverted little weirdos ourselves behind closed doors? Also discussed on the pod, Bad Dads, MILF Summer, and an ending that’ll blow your socks off (get it?).
