Jesus, the Jews and New Covenant Judaism (Part 1) (Jer 31:31-34) 1. JESUS IS THE YHWH OF THE OLD TESTAMENT.(Luk 22:20 w/v31 “LORD” [Yhwh];1 hence Jud 1:5; 1Co 10:1-4) 2. SALVATION - IF WE ARE TO BE SAVED - IS A MARRIAGE TO JESUS.2.1. (32, “I was a Husband to them” [34b, “for I will forgive their sin”] = God’s covenants for salvation are marital in nature (i.e., they are marriage covenants).2.2. (NC: Mat 9:15; 2Co 11:2; Eph 5:25; Rev 19:7)2.3. Because the salvific covenant we enter with Jesus is a marriage covenant, it operates according to the principles of a marriage: gain and maintain. We gain Jesus as our Husband and Savior through formal vows of lifelong love and loyalty (in baptism) and maintain our marriage with Jesus by fulfilling those vows in faithfulness to His commands (NC: 1Pe 3:21 “appeal” = Pledge/vow of love and loyalty = Faith [Grk., pistus = Pledge of faithfulness – 1Ti 5:12]; Rev 19:8; Jam 2:24; Mat 28:19-20; Consider also: Abe: Gen 17:1-2, 9-11, 18:19 [Gen 15:6 w/9-10 w/18]; OC: Exo 24:7-8 [1Pe 1:1-2] w/Deu 28:1-2; Deu 7:9; Psa 25:10). 3. JESUS ONLY SAVES ISRAELITES OR JEWS.3.1. Jesus’ new covenant is exclusive to Israelites/the Jews (32, “house of Israel...house of Judah” = Divided kingdom which is Israel/the Israelites or Jewish people [hence, v33, “This is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel]; Jer 31:1 w/35-37w/30:1-3 w/8-9, 32:37-41, 33:14-15 w/23-26; Eze 36:22-28, 37:16-23, 39:25 w/29).3.2. The kingdom of God established by Jesus is likewise exclusive to Israel/the Israelites/Jews ([1Ch 28:5 w/2Ch 13:8 – in both cases, “kingdom of Yhwh”]; Act 1:1-6; Mat 1:17 w/2Sa 7:12-13; [Isa 9:6-7 w/11:1-5 and 12 w/2:1-4]; Jer 23:5, 8; Eze 34:11-15, 37:24-28 [Messiah is connected to restoring Israel as the kingdom of God “my sanctuary is in their midst forever”]; Amo 9:11-15 [Act 15:16-17]; Mic 5:2-4; Zec 9:9-10; Dan 7:13-14 and 27 w/Dan 2:44-45 and [v34 w/Deu 27:6; Isa 5:1-3; Heb 11:10 w/12:22] w/Mat 16:13-18 [Peter] = You are the Messiah, the divine Son/other Yhwh of Dan 7; [Jesus] = Upon this “rock” or divine kingdom My Father - revealed to you and givesto Me, I will restore or “[re]build” Israel [aka, the church, New Israel/Jerusalem/Zion]. And it will have eternal dominion [even against the “gates of Hades”]). Hence the reason the gospels are littered w/Jesus teaching about the “kingdom of God/heaven” and talk about it being “near” or “at hand” (Mat 3:2, 4:17, 23, 6:10, 10:7; Mat 13:24-30 w/36-46 “kingdom of heaven” is in this world and distinguished from “the kingdom of My Father”; Mar 1:15; Luk 10:9, 11:20, 21:31]). Consider also: Eph 2:12 [to have “hope” or “the covenants of promise” we must no longer “be excluded from the commonwealth of Israel”]).3.3. Jesus became human to seek and save Israelites/Jews alone (Mat 1:18 w/Heb 2:14-16 “Abraham” = The father of – and first, Jew [Gen 14:12 “Abram the Hebrew”] – i.e., Jew [anachronistic – a member of God’s Jewish covenant people starting w/Abraham]2 = Jesus only saves Jews; Mat 15:24 [10:6] “lost sheep of the house of Israel” = Jesus refused to go to anyone other than the Jews during His earthly ministry; Psa 121:3-4, 130:7-8). 4. JESUS' JEWISH NEW COVENANT IS JUDAISM 2.0, NOT A NEW RELIGION (CHRISTIANITY).4.1. (33, “I will put My Law within them...”) = “My Law” (obviously) refers to the Old Testament Scriptures or the religion of Judaism. Additionally, Jesus established a new covenant - not a new religion. Calling it a new covenant assumes an existing covenant it replaces/modifies in the same religion. IOW: It is still Judaism – just Judaism modified and upgraded (Judaism 2.0 or New Covenant Judaism). Jesus would be a false prophet if He came to establish a new religion (Deu 12:28-13:1). Hence why He says what He does in (Mat 5:17-18 and Joh 4:22). Consider also (Luk 22:20 [“this cup is the new covenant” = The cup associated w/Judaism’s Passover] w/1Co 5:7-8 [“Christ our Passover has been sacrificed. Therefore let us celebrate the feast” = Judaism continues to be the religion practiced under the new covenant [mutatis mutandis]; Phi 3:2 “we are the true circumcision” = We are the true Jews).4.2. Furthermore, the Yhwh-Jesus of the old and new covenant is a different God than the (false) god of Christianity:31) Yhwh-Jesusis part of a family of three separate persons/beings and distinct Yhwhs (Gods) versus Christianity’s belief in three persons who are at the same time, existing as only one being and god [Christian doctrine of the Trinity] (Dan 7:13-14 w/Psa 45:6-7 w/Joh 5:18 w/Heb 1:8-9).2) Yhwh-Jesus gives everyone exactly what they deserve/according to their deeds versus Christianity belief in a god who doesn’t give people what they deserve [Christian doctrine of unconditional election] (Jer 17:10; Mat 16:27; Rev 20:11-15).4.3. By the early church calling themselves “the Way” (Act 9:2) they were confirming their religion to be a form (or “sect”) of Judaism (Isa 40:3 w/Mat 3:3]; Act 24:5 [Mar 14:67 “the Nazarene, Jesus”] w/14 “sect” [within Judaism] who “serve the God of our fathers, believing everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets [i.e., practicing orthodox Judaism]”; See also Qumran [1QS/Rule of the Community 8:12-16] “the Way” = By the time of Jesus, this phrase had become an identity marker [shibboleth] of sects within Judaism who were preparing for Messiah’s return [e.g., the Essenes]).4.4. Lastly it should be pointed out that where these first disciples of Jesus met and worshipped was in the Jewish synagogues dedicated to the practice of Judaism (e.g., Act 9:2). Jesus’ people considered themselves to still be Jews practicing Judaism – only in its new covenant form (NC Judaism; NC Jews). CONCLUSION:1) Point Not To Miss: Having Jesus as your Savior is a Jewish thing not a Christian thing. Jesus didn’t come to establish a new religion, but a new covenant for His existing religion, Judaism. Every other religion claiming Jesus is therefore false (e.g., Evangelical Christianity, Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Mormonism, etc.,).2) Question To Ponder: What about all prophecy and passages promising salvation to the Gentiles (i.e., non-Jews, [lit., pagans] – those not a part of Israel and/or not worshipping Yhwh according to His religion) (Isa 2:1-4, 9:1, 11:1-5 w/10-12, 42:1-6, 43:1-7 [“everyone” includes “all Gentiles” – Rom 15:17], 49:6, 51:4, 60:1, 3; Hos 1:10, 2:23 [Mat 4:15-16, 12:18-21; Luk 2:32; Act 9:15, 10:45, 11:1 w/18, 13:46-48, 14:27, 15:3, 7, 14, 16-19, 23, 22:21 26:17, 20, 23, 28:28; Rom 3:29, 9:22-26, 11:11, 13, 15:8-13, 16-18, 27, 16:4; Gal 1:16, 2:2 w/8-9, 3:8, 14; Eph 3:6-8; Col 1:27; 1Th 2:16; 1Ti 2:7; 2Ti 4:17])? 1 God’s divine name which He not only confirmed to Moses (Exo 3:15; Moses ml already knew the name given his connection to Jethro – apriest of Yhwh) but based on its coupling with v14 (“I am”), a name communicating His reputation as the God who judges – and is to bejudged - on what He does (“I am what I do”).2 Not only do ethnic Jews identify Abraham as the first Jew but the first convert to Judaism (Talmud, Chagigah 3a; Gen 17:1, 18:19).3“Christian” was a derogatory term (slur) invented by the Jews who rejected Jesus to distinguish His disciples from themselves and to denythey were the true followers of Messiah and Judaism (i.e., that they were indeed the people of “the Way”). This is how also it should beunderstood in those passages where we find it in the NT (Act 11:26; Act 26:28; 1Pe 4:16).
