    Geekwire Week of 06.22.26

Geekwire is back with another round of the latest, greatest, and weirdest in Rock news headlines. This week, we cover 2026 Songwriters Hall of Fame honorees Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley and Gene's sudden absence at the ceremonies. Also on the show: Ace Frehley’s 1975 Les Paul brings serious money at auction (but is it legit?), KISS lays out its 2026 programming for the land-locked Vegas Kruise, and Rush launches its Fifty Something tour with drummer Anika Nilles behind the kit. Elsewhere, Faith No More’s Bill Gould offers hope for a return to live activity, Vivian Campbell reconnects with Sweet Savage, and Stephen Pearcy reveals his extremely rock-and-roll vocal warmup routine. We also touch on Ozzy Osbourne’s possible A.I. avatar, the 40th anniversary of Heavy Metal Parking Lot, a new supernatural heavy metal/horror series, and the Download Festival Ferris wheel story that absolutely did not need to happen. We also share our excitement for the upcoming Mountain Music Fest taking place in Gatlinburg, TN in August. Hang with us there! We hope you enjoy Geekwire and SHARE with a friend! How Dr. Dre Reshaped Hip Hop 3 Times with guest Mick Breezy

You guys ready for this one?  Dr. Dre didn’t just have a great run in hip-hop… he reshaped the entire genre three separate times in less than thirty years.  First, as the driving force behind N.W.A. He helped take raw, unfiltered gangsta rap out of the streets of Compton and slam it onto the national stage. Straight Outta Compton, an actual FBI warning letter — the whole thing was a cultural explosion.  Then, after leaving N.W.A., Dre basically invents the G-Funk sound. The Chronic, Snoop Dogg, laid-back Parliament-Funkadelic grooves mixed with hard street edge. Suddenly that West Coast vibe took over radio, took over the charts, and defined the entire mid-90s.  And just when you think he’s done? Late ‘90s Dre starts Aftermath, signs this skinny white kid from Detroit named Eminem, and opens hip-hop up to a whole new generation of fans. Then comes 50 Cent, Kendrick, and the business empire that turned him into a billionaire. Three different eras. Three different sounds. Three different ways he changed what hip-hop could be. So today we’re asking: Is Dr. Dre the most important man in hip-hop history? This one’s a banger. Let’s get into it. 3. I'm In Love With That Song: The Band - "Life Is A Carnival"

    2d ago

I'm In Love With That Song: The Band - "Life Is A Carnival"

By 1971, The Band was one of the most influential forces in rock music, having steered the genre away from psychedelic excess toward a more rustic, roots-based sound. However, the recording of their fourth album, Cahoots, was a period of high tension within the group.  Despite these fractures, the album’s opening track, "Life is a Carnival," stands out as a masterpiece of groove and atmosphere, drawing on Robertson’s real-life experiences working in a traveling circus to paint a vivid picture of life as a relentless "hustle." Let’s dive inside the track to examine the individual elements that make it work: the interplay between Levon Helm’s "behind the beat" drumming, Rick Danko’s fretless bass, Robbie Robertson’s funky guitar work, and the "calliope" atmosphere created by Garth Hudson’s Lowrey organ. And a major highlight is Allen Toussaint’s contribution; the New Orleans legend’s horn arrangements were written specifically to weave around Robertson’s existing guitar solo, resulting in a rhythmic conversation that remains irresistible decades later. This episode is a tribute not just to a great song, but to the enduring legacy of five musicians who changed the landscape of American music. 4. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Rock PR Veteran Sharon Chevin

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Rock PR Veteran Sharon Chevin

We are proud to welcome Rock PR veteran Sharon Chevin who has been in the music business for more than 4 decades. What began as a deep love for rock music became a sustaining career which has taken her around the world and helped her forge friendships with some of the biggest artists on the planet. These days, Sharon promotes and manages media for prog rock legends Yes (and she wants me to remind everyone that Aurora is out now) and Steve Hackett (she teases his new collaboration with Marillion's Steve Rothery) but has worked with and hung around some of the biggest stars of all time. Her stories are amazing and funny as she shares how Alice Cooper will work a 14 hour day as long as you give him a couple of hours to shop. Hear how she had to convince hotel staff in Germany that she needed corn flakes for Tom Petty and George Harrison at 1 AM. She also talks about going to see a new band at The Hammersmith Palais called U2 with Pete Townshend and Bruce Springsteen. Mostly, Sharon lets us know that most of the top talent are marvelous people who are great to work with. But not all of them are and she drops a couple of names onto the jerk list. But mostly we hear about how Chris Squire invited her to stay with his family after an earthquake or how Jon Lord would always drop by her local pub for a glass of wine when he was in town. She admits she was instantly charmed by Billy Idol the moment she met him and how Bryan Adams talked her out of getting Bonnie Raitt's picture taken with Madonna. We're just glad Sharon is still doing PR for bands we love and that she's still sharing her stories of her rock n roll odyssey. 5. Interview with Mary Zournazi, director of "My Rembetika Blues"

Interview with Mary Zournazi, director of "My Rembetika Blues"

The origins of popular American and English music forms like blues, jazz, rock and folk are well documented in the English-speaking world (and possibly the non-English speaking world). So, when a film comes along that looks at something outside of that realm, I find my interest piqued. Welcome to episode 135 of See Hear Podcast. Greek-Australian film maker and academic Mary Zournazi decided she wanted to make a personal documentary about the history of Rembetika music, and its origins. I say “personal” because the story she presents is through the lens of her family history. This is no ordinary documentary about “this thing happening leading to that thing happening”. She goes back to the story of her grandmother being a refugee during  the Greco-Turkish war of the early 1920s, and how that war led to the environment of Greek diaspora refugees resettling in Piraeus and Thessaloniki. Many of these people brought their musical expertise and started playing in hash dens, singing songs of hard times – hence, why Rembetika is often called the blues of Greece. Mary’s 2021 documentary My Rembetika Blues does what all good music documentaries should do – it tells us as much about social circumstances as it does about music. She tells her family story, speaks to historians, musicians, instrument makers, a rap artist who links Rembetika to his modern style of performing, and a clergyman who is also a musicologist explaining the structure of the ancient Middle Eastern styles that led to Rembetika. Tim is still on leave, but Kerry and I had a brilliant time chatting with Mary about her film and personal history. This is a film that should be seen by anyone with a wider interest in music, and how history dictates its development. We’re hugely grateful for her time. You can watch the film on Video On Demand at https://vimeo.com/ondemand/myrembetikablues2 or if you’re a Kanopy member (and why wouldn’t you be), check to see if it’s on your library’s film catalogue. If you want to watch the Costas Ferris film Rembetiko directed by Costas Ferris that served as Mary’s inspiration to investigate Rembetika music, it’s on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZXSjtZ0P1I See Hear is proudly part of the Pantheon Network of music podcasts.
