    Welcome and thank you for listening to leadership portraits. This is your friend, Lee Edward and I have a great conversation, which, I’m confident will inspire your leadership and stir you on to keep growing. This episode features, James Thom, Senior Director of Development, infrastructure, and Operations, Hewlett-Packard (HP). This conversation covers a lot of ground. Even more than chronicling the process and path of James’ leadership formation, the conversation really shines light on the inner motivation and driving desire that changed for James over more than a decade into his early 30s. I think you’ll come away with a refreshed perspective on your own driving motivations for leading, and as James says, “to look at the fruit of you leadership, what is it producing in you and in others.” James also shares some real practical tools, like asking people who come to him with problems, “what do you want to get out of this conversation? Are you looking for a solution, do you want to bounce some ideas off me, do you just need to vent?” I think this practice alone will take your leadership to a new level and make you a more pleasant colleague. James process of development showcases how helping other leaders be successful be successful paves a way for you to grow in your own leadership. He speaks to his motivation for leadership early on in his life being influenced by recognition, needing to be seen as doing good and to be accepted. Over the course of the conversation you will hear how this changed over 10+ years to the motivation he has now to be of service, develop, coach and mentor for the benefit of individuals in his organization but also the future success of the organization 3 years, 5 years, 10 years in the future.     Episode 13: Bill Braunworth, Head of Department of Horticulture, Oregon State University. Bill described his role as department head like two freight trains coming together, the freight train of university administration (president, provost, dean) heading in one direction and the students and faculty heading in the other. Then the department head is in the middle of that helping the two not collide but collaborate and make something better. It’s a delicate position and a key position in the university where everything intersects. This experience has enabled Bill to effectively develop as a 360 degree leader; someone who can lead up, down and laterally throughout the organization. This episode portrays the process of developing into a leader that Bill went through to eventually be selected for his leadership role as department head. Prior to the department head role he was a program leader with the Oregon State University agricultural extension service with a specialty in weed management. He also led several interesting initiatives: Klamath Water Allocation, Landmarks in Conservation, Specialty Crops Pesticide Registration, Pesticide Safety for Latinos and The Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds among many others. In his career, Bill has done international, multi-year work/research projects in Egypt and Malawi, Africa in the areas of water use and management and also horticultural research and advising program on production tropical fruits, coffee, etc. Bill shares lessons learned about effectively working cross-culturally.     Episode 12: Chad Weaver, Pastor of Real Life College Ministry

    If you are seeking to develop your leadership capacity or someone seeking to improve the status quo for the common good, you’re sure to enjoy this episode of Leadership Portraits. This episode features Chad Weaver, college pastor at Calvary Chapel Corvallis. The college group is called Real Life and meets at Oregon State University. Chad is a dynamic leader who also is on staff with Fellowship of Christian Athletes and works with athletes, including baseball, basketball and others at the university. At the time of this recording, Real Life is averaging more than 300 students in attendance at weekly meetings and has 7 staff, 4 interns and 32 student leaders. In this conversation, Chad shared key insights on understanding your calling including clues to look for that can help you determine what you’re calling or life purpose may be. Also helpful in this conversation is the arc of development that led Chad to eventually become college pastor at Calvary Chapel Corvallis. It came down to a series of small “yeses” to opportunities that presented themselves. It’s a great reminder that we can’t always create the opportunities we want, but we can be ready to seize key opportunities when they present themselves. Chad also shared his approach to overcoming challenges in leadership. Real Life Ministries has had several leaders over the years. All of them have had widely varying visions and styles of leadership. Before becoming pastor, Chad served as a staff member under many of these former leaders. Chad shared on the power of keeping his attitude positive and looking to the bigger vision of what Real Life Ministries was trying to accomplish as a Jesus focused ministry. That has produced the continued emphasis on pouring into students and especially on developing student leaders. Throughout all the changes of pastors, it was the vibrant student leaders, many of whom became staff later, that enabled Real Life Ministries to sustain itself through all the changes. This conversation is sure to be an encouragement in your leadership development, whether you are a new leader or a seasoned leader who wants to keep growing.
