    Wrestling in the Dark

Jacob's story in Genesis 32 is one of the most honest and raw portraits of faith in all of Scripture. After deceiving his father and stealing his brother Esau's blessing, Jacob spent twenty years in exile. When God called him to return home, Jacob obeyed, even though the last thing he knew about Esau was that his brother wanted him dead. Faced with the news that Esau was approaching with four hundred men, Jacob was gripped with fear. Yet he did not turn back. He prayed honestly, admitting his unworthiness and his terror while holding tightly to God's promises. He then did everything within his power to pursue peace, sending generous gifts ahead to his brother and trusting God with the outcome he could not control. What happened next changed Jacob forever. Left alone in the night, he wrestled with God until daybreak. When God touched his hip and knocked it out of joint, Jacob still refused to let go, crying out that he would not release his grip until he received a blessing. That desperate, painful moment of clinging to God was the turning point of Jacob's life. God gave him a new name, Israel, meaning one who struggles with God, replacing the identity of deceiver with one defined by dependence and perseverance. The limp Jacob carried from that night was not a symbol of failure. It was a daily reminder that his strength came from God alone. Jacob's story points us toward something even greater. The night before His crucifixion, Jesus knelt in the Garden of Gethsemane and surrendered His will to the Father, then walked willingly toward the cross so that we would never have to carry the weight of our sin alone. Because of what Jesus did, we are free to stop running, stop controlling, and surrender to a God who transforms broken people into something new. Whatever fear or burden you are carrying right now, God is not asking for a polished prayer or a perfect life. He is asking you to hold on to Him with everything you have.

    Running and Resting

Jacob was fleeing for his life after deceiving his father and stealing his brother's blessing. He had no plan, no certainty about the future, and no idea when or if he would ever return home. On what should have been one of the worst nights of his life, he lay down in an open wilderness with a stone for a pillow and fell asleep. What happened next changed everything. God appeared to Jacob in a dream, showing him a stairway connecting heaven and earth, with angels ascending and descending on it. At the top stood God Himself, who reaffirmed the covenant He had made with Abraham and Isaac and made a deeply personal promise: He would be with Jacob, watch over him, and bring him home. The stairway in Jacob's dream was never meant to be climbed. Jacob was asleep on the ground while God opened the connection between heaven and earth above him. This is a picture of grace. God makes the first move. He comes down to us rather than waiting for us to work our way up to Him. Jesus confirmed this when He told Nathaniel that he would see heaven open and angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man, identifying Himself as the fulfillment of Jacob's dream. He is the bridge between God and humanity, and access to God comes through Him alone. When Jacob woke up, he was stunned to realize that God had been present in that place all along, even when he had no awareness of it. He took the stone he had slept on, stood it upright as a memorial, and named the place Bethel, meaning the house of God. His pillow became a pillar, a lasting reminder of God's faithfulness in an unlikely place. This is an invitation for all of us. God does not promise to remove the hard journey, but He does promise to walk through it with us. The presence of pain in your life does not equal the absence of God. He may not change your circumstances immediately, but He will change you in the middle of them.
