Found My Sound - Ep.26 - SHOOT TO ILL™ Podcast

This episode is about finding the sound that finally made my videos feel right. After struggling with music, pacing, and how my edits landed, I started paying closer attention to how sound affects retention and mood, and whether a video feels forced or effortless. The bigger lesson is about learning through posting, dealing with perfectionism, and realizing that your creative voice usually shows up after you stop overthinking every piece of the process. I also talk about the Insta360 Luna Ultra, buying it for Luna, why it might be a strong creator camera for people who just want to pick up and shoot, and the older SHOOT TO ILL projects I’ve had sitting in the chamber that I finally want to bring back. Keep shooting. --- 📢 More from SHOOT TO ILL ► SHOOT TO ILL Podcast https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLY6Y3cKoSaPXsUHFlqO0fBSQrHCBsbXUA --- 00:00 Intro 01:16 Protecting work, health, and relationships 02:29 Starting low-lift short-form content 03:43 Trying to make content feel timeless 04:12 Analytics, heat maps, and creative decisions 06:15 Why music and pacing have been hard 07:13 Finding inspiration in Cigarettes After Sex 09:15 Searching for the right stock music 09:41 Testing the sound in Vlog 7 10:48 Comparing retention on YouTube Shorts 12:44 Why changing music is never simple 15:01 Perfectionism versus posting 16:06 How creators evolve through consistency 17:43 Getting comfortable by hitting record 18:35 The bigger dream for SHOOT TO ILL 20:46 Checking ambition and staying focused 21:55 The Insta360 Luna Ultra 23:48 Rushing a creator camera review 25:39 Revisiting an old car photography video 28:40 Final thoughts --- Martin Depict is a Los Angeles-based photographer documenting the process of building a creative career. Less Is More - Ep.25 - SHOOT TO ILL™ Podcast

After two stressful weeks restoring over 60TB of files from the cloud, I had to keep working off my laptop, finish edits slower than normal, and deal with the kind of workflow problems that make every small mistake feel bigger than it should. In this episode of the SHOOT TO ILL Podcast, I talk about what happened after my RAID system died, what I learned from restoring everything through Backblaze, why rushing my DJI Osmo video made me realize I was doing too much, and why I’m finally switching from Premiere Pro to DaVinci Resolve. This one is really about editing, creative restraint, file management, color grading, and learning when to pull back. Sometimes the work gets better when you stop adding more to it. More Memory, More Problems - Ep.24 - SHOOT TO ILL™ Podcast

After getting back from a shoot in Northern California, I came home to one of the worst things a photographer can deal with: my main RAID system would not turn on. No lights, no fans, no power. For a second, it felt like years of photo and video work could be gone. In this episode of the SHOOT TO ILL podcast, I talk through what happened with my G-RAID Shuttle XL, why Backblaze might be saving me right now, and the backup system I use to protect client files. I also get into the real “storage tax” photographers and videographers pay when shooting high-resolution photos, 4K video, 7K open gate, RAW files, CFexpress cards, SSDs, and massive archives. This is not the flashiest topic, but it is one of the most important. If you create for a living, your files are your business. Losing them is not just stressful. It is unprofessional, expensive, and avoidable if you build the right system before something goes wrong. Keep shooting. -------------------------------------------------- 📢 More from SHOOT TO ILL ► SHOOT TO ILL Podcast https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLY6Y3cKoSaPXsUHFlqO0fBSQrHCBsbXUA -------------------------------------------------- ➖ 00:00 Intro ➖ 00:20 My RAID system died ➖ 02:00 Why I use Backblaze ➖ 03:00 Calling Western Digital ➖ 04:10 Warranty replacement options ➖ 05:12 Why losing client files is unacceptable ➖ 05:55 My backup workflow after shoots ➖ 07:01 SSD backups and client drives ➖ 08:35 Working off the G-RAID Shuttle XL ➖ 10:09 Recovering files from Backblaze ➖ 12:33 RAID 0 and cloud backup ➖ 14:34 The storage tax for creators ➖ 15:47 Why 7K open gate can be a storage problem ➖ 18:38 Choosing the right camera for the job ➖ 20:55 Memory cards are getting expensive ➖ 22:42 SanDisk vs ProGrade CFexpress cards ➖ 25:35 A simple memory card safety system ➖ 26:42 Why photographers should archive client work ➖ 31:03 Build your backup system now ➖ 31:54 Final thoughts -------------------------------------------------- Martin Depict is a photographer based in Los Angeles documenting the process of building a creative career. The Worst Client I've Ever Worked For - Ep.23 - SHOOT TO ILL™ Podcast

This episode is the story of the worst client situation I have ever dealt with as a photographer. After years of working with someone I trusted, a major brand project slowly turned into late arrivals, rushed shoots, unprepared wardrobe, unpaid invoices, and work that made me look worse than the situation actually was. I kept trying to protect the client, but in doing that, I ended up protecting the wrong person. This became one of the biggest lessons I have learned as a photographer, creative director, and independent contractor. This episode is not about exposing someone. It is about understanding the cost of staying quiet, the importance of speaking up, and why photographers need to protect the process just as much as the final image. Keep shooting. -------------------------------------------------- 📢 More from SHOOT TO ILL ► SHOOT TO ILL Podcast https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLY6Y3cKoSaPXsUHFlqO0fBSQrHCBsbXUA -------------------------------------------------- ➖ 00:00 Intro ➖ 00:43 The Story ➖ 20:32 Why I Am Telling This Story ➖ 29:35 What's Changed Since Then ➖ 32:03 What You Can Take Away From This Story -------------------------------------------------- Martin Depict is a photographer based in Los Angeles documenting the process of building a creative career. What Coachella Taught Me About Vlogging - Ep.22 - SHOOT TO ILL™ Podcast

In Episode 22 of the SHOOT TO ILL Podcast, I recap my Coachella 2026 Safari experience one last time before moving on from festival mode. This year was different. It was my 12th Coachella, my first time doing Safari, and the first one Luna and I experienced as an engaged couple. I also talk about what it felt like to vlog in public for the first time at that scale, the mistakes I made shooting with the DJI Action 6, and why filming yourself is a completely different creative muscle than filming for someone else. This episode gets into the balance between capturing memories, telling a better story, and not letting perfection stop you from documenting your life. Sometimes the footage is shaky. Sometimes the focus is off. But the memory is still worth having. Keep shooting. -------------------------------------------------- 📢 More from SHOOT TO ILL ► SHOOT TO ILL Podcast https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLY6Y3cKoSaPXsUHFlqO0fBSQrHCBsbXUA -------------------------------------------------- ➖ 00:00 Intro ➖ 01:10 The Safari Experience ➖ 02:07 Why the golf carts changed everything ➖ 02:58 Guest passes, crowds, and comfort zones ➖ 03:29 The real cost of Safari ➖ 04:29 Veranda and Red Bull Mirage packages ➖ 05:54 Why I wanted this year to feel special ➖ 06:51 Favorite sets of the weekend ➖ 08:15 Getting overwhelmed during Justin Bieber's Set ➖ 12:11 Shooting with the DJI Action 6 ➖ 15:54 My favorite photo from Coachella ➖ 17:02 Vlogging in public for the first time ➖ 19:47 Splitting one video into two better videos ➖ 21:56 Why documenting life matters ➖ 24:05 Try vlogging for 30 days -------------------------------------------------- Martin Depict is a photographer based in Los Angeles documenting the process of building a creative career. I'm Doing Too Much - Ep.19 - SHOOT TO ILL™ Podcast

In this episode of the SHOOT TO ILL podcast, Martin talks honestly about something a lot of creators experience but rarely admit: getting stuck in your own head. After two intense weeks of editing photos and staying consistent with uploads, Martin reflects on the pressure of trying to do everything right when building something new online. From constantly being fed YouTube growth advice to overthinking SEO, thumbnails, and strategy, the conversation turns into a reminder that doing too much too fast can kill momentum. Along the way, a simple trip to Sephora turns into a perfect example of the same mindset — overanalyzing every option instead of sticking with what already works. The bigger realization becomes clear: the key to building something meaningful is taking small steps, staying consistent, and focusing on the people who genuinely connect with what you're creating.
