    346-Lisa Schafer: Bible Studies She Never Meant to Write

    Send us Fan Mail Some stories are not for scrolling past. This one belongs to Lisa Schaefer. Five years ago she was working part time in healthcare and getting buried in office work she was never built for. She prayed about it, and she says God told her to go home. She went, a little like Abram, with no idea why. She thought maybe she was supposed to write a memoir. Trouble was, she is not a writer. She says she does not even want to take down the order before the family gets pizza. So she sat at a blank screen for weeks. She had plenty of material. Twenty five years of homeschooling. Three adopted children with special needs. Infertility. An interracial family. None of it felt right. Then a friend prayed one sentence over her, and the wall came down. She said the place God has redeemed Lisa the most is probably the place she is meant to reach out from. That changed everything. Her father left when she was two. A man abused her when she was five. She carried the shame, and she says she built plenty of her own on top of it. It took four decades before she could forgive either one of them, and by the time she did, she had almost forgotten how heavy it had been to carry. Now she walks women through the same process. In this conversation she talks about the difference between asking Jesus to be your Savior and making Him Lord, and why forgiveness gets so hard when that gap is still open. She talks about starting with the lie underneath the pain instead of the pain itself. I do not feel loved, prove to me I am. She talks about what to do at two in the morning when the memory comes back. And she says out loud what a lot of women are afraid to say, that both of her perpetrators died without ever asking her for anything. She is also clear about what she will not do. She does not sit in the ugliness with a woman and pick it apart. She says you are not your trauma, and she means to get you out. There is a line in this episode you will not forget.     343-Courtney Garner: Why Testosterone Matters for Women Too

    Send us Fan Mail At twenty two she had an upper and lower scope. The nurses told her they had never seen someone her age get both. The answer she was offered was surgery or medication for life. Courtney Garner said no to both and went looking for the root. She is now a board certified family nurse practitioner who has run her own functional medicine practice for six years. Three things you will take from this one. Common is not the same as normal. The fatigue, the mood drop, the sleep disruption. Those are signals, not personality traits. Plug the holes before you refill the cup. She works on the cause and the deficiency at the same time, which is why women notice a difference in two or three months instead of two or three years.     342-Dr. Heather Burchfield: Not Here to Be Nice

This conversation includes depression and a mental health crisis.) Some stories are not for scrolling past. This one belongs to Dr. Heather Burchfield. She had walked with the Lord for over thirty five years when God handed her something big. Decades of faith did not make the assignment any less terrifying. Then two other things landed at the same time, one personal and one professional. She calls it the perfect storm. Three fronts hitting at once. She ended up in a mental health crisis, at the bottom of what she describes as a hole with no floor. She is a perfectionist, an oldest daughter, type A, academic. She likes to see the end from the beginning. She could not see anything. She just knew God had said do this thing, and most days she could not get off the couch. Then her mother called. Her mama is five foot nothing in high heels and a giant in the faith. Up at four thirty every morning, two hours in the Word, the one everybody calls when they need prayer. Heather stopped picking up the phone, because she knew what her mother would say. So her mother said this instead. I have my car keys in my hand. If you do not do something, whatever that is, I am coming there. Heather is fifty one. She says she is still a little scared of her mother, and she was scared enough that day to get up. Her mother pointed her to Ephesians. She started at chapter one and rebuilt her identity from the ground. Now she writes deep dive Bible studies using original languages, accessible enough for a woman who has never studied the Bible and challenging enough that pastors tell her they did not learn it in seminary. One of them is her own father, an ordained pastor in his late seventies. Her book is Not Here to Be Nice. She makes a distinction in this conversation worth hearing all the way through. Nice is a Victorian idea designed to keep people agreeable. It is dishonest, and dishonest is never kind. She gives a picture for it. If your child runs into the road and you are nice, you tell him to have fun out there. Kindness means you scream and grab him by the shirt. It does not look nice from the outside, but you just saved his life. She says women have been keeping the peace when scripture blessed the peacemakers, and those are two different jobs. She also talks about what she does when the depression comes back, because it does. She names it out loud to her husband. I am falling down again. Then she goes back to the truth, because her anxiety lies to her and only truth refutes a lie. Psalm 139 verses 23 and 24 she has prayed over herself hundreds of times.     341-Jennifer Merrill: The Wine Closet Became a Prayer Closet

    Send us Fan Mail She built a house with a wine display room in the center. Two hundred bottles behind a glass wall. Then one fall she dropped to her knees in her bedroom and told God her life was a mess. Jennifer Merrill laid down drinking that day. Everything she had been numbing surfaced, and she had to face all of it. She hired a contractor, took out the glass, built a wall, and turned that room into a prayer closet. Three things you will take from this one. At the root of it was the need to be loved by God. She knew He loved her. She did not believe it. When she came to believe it, the issues got smaller one by one. Getting busy for Jesus almost broke her.     340-Windy Houser: He Walked Her Through Deliverance in Her Own Bedroom

    Send us Fan Mail She was given her first dose of LSD on her thirteenth birthday. Years later, living off coffee and cigarettes and unable to sleep or eat, she cried out and asked God to show up if He was real. He did. Wendy Houser describes it as a tangible blanket of peace she had never felt before. Hungry for more, she joined the church that was all around her and gave it fourteen faithful years, eight of them teaching the adult women.
