The Hoodoo Music Podcast

Over the last year or so I have experienced this podcast as a music fan, then an aspiring musician, and finaly as a guest. For fans this podcast is a great way to connect with and discover Upstate SC bands and occasionally others that happen to pass through. For aspiring musicians, it gives a good understanding of the local scene, venues, and the bands that you could possibly open up for. For the guests it is a great way to get their music out and heard, and to let others get to know you and your message. Mark has this podcast thing down. He keeps things well-organized, but loose enough that he can roll with whatever the artists throw at him, all while keeping the focus on the artist and making sure they are presented well to the audience. I can't recommend this podcast enough to anyone in or interested in the Upstate SC music scene.

As a musician, one of the hardest things is getting your music heard and talked about. Larger media outlets cater to established acts to reach a larger audience (or in some cases help them look cooler), smaller media outlets run a press release if you are lucky and when they do write their own articles or reviews it is so amateur you really cannot hope to use much of it in your promotional materials. The heart and soul of the indie scene lies with blogs and podcasts. However, many online blogs and podcasts are either overwhelmed with submissions or the modern day Empire Records music snobs. Mark Jones’ Hoodoo Music Podcast is different. First, Mark is a musician. He gets it and speaks our language but still is able to make the music relatable to the casual music fan. Secondly, he is a talented producer. The audio quality of his recordings of the bands he features has a indie sound without sounding like it was done on a cassette tape in someone’s garage. Thirdly, he is a shrewd marketer. In short time he has built a reputation in Upstate SC as a leading name in the local music scene. His podcasts and related videos are must-watch/listen for anyone who wants to know who is who in the area’s exploding music scene. Even if you do not live in or near Upstate SC, if you call yourself a fan of music ESPECIALLY independent music, you owe it to yourself to listen to this podcast. It will remind you of glory years gone by in the annals of music’s golden years.
