The News Beat podcast presents “This Week In Social Justice,” streaming live Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET. on Facebook, YouTube and Twitch.

Join us on this interactive program to share your thoughts on recent news and ongoing issues as we welcome special guests, break down important issues, and sprinkle in our unique brand of Hip Hop-fueled journalism along the way.

Our very special guests for this stream:

Catherine Flowers, an internationally recognized environmental activist, founder of the Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice—which seeks to address the root causes of poverty by seeking sustainable solutions—and author of “Waste: One Woman’s Fight Against America’s Dirty Secret.”

Amy Stelly, a designer and board member of the Urban Conservancy and co-founder of the Claiborne Avenue Alliance. Stelly will discuss how the construction of an interstate highway—dubbed a “monument to racism”—decimated a predominantly Black New Orleans neighborhood and became a public health threat.

News Beat is an award-winning podcast that mixes hard-hitting, social justice journalism with hip-hop to uniquely examine some of the most pressing issues facing society. Each episode features interviews from well-known voices—ranging from activists to scholars to journalists—set to music, interspersed with powerful, original lyrics crafted by notable artists specifically for that episode.

Law & Order vs. Reform in L.A.

Law & Order vs. Reform in L.A.

Reform candidates are increasingly winning district attorney elections in the United States. The movement represents a  direct challenge to the decades-long tough-on-crime era, characterized by punitive sentencing laws, significant investments in police forces and prisons, and the criminalization of mental health—culminating in the highest incarceration rates in the world. Opponents are fighting back, with the most recent example being Los Angeles County, where a union representing hundreds of prosecutors has sued newly elected District Attorney George Gascon. We examine the fight over prosecutorial discretion—long cherished by self-styled law and order prosecutors—and what the contentious battle in Los Angeles means for reformers nationwide.

MLK: What They Won't Teach In School [2021]

MLK: What They Won't Teach In School [2021]

Like we always do at this time of year, we present an alternative look at Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy, examining how the civil rights icon was so much more than simply the “I Have a Dream” soundbite, which has become known as the cornerstone of his public perception. Along with Pastor Roger C. Williams of the First Baptist Church of Glen Cove, NY, Larry Hamm, of the People's Organization for Progress, hip-hop artist Silent Knight, and King’s own words, listeners learn of MLK’s Poor People’s Campaign, which he believed would be his true legacy. More than likely, it was this that got him killed.

Second to none

Seriously, equal or better than any podcast I have ever listened to. A unique blend of investigative journalism and original lyricists. Pick any episode. They are all incredible. There is a lot of love and hard work behind these episodes and it shows. Should be required listening.
