Episode 646: How to Support a Loved One Through Gambling Addiction with Anita Ondine Smith

Send us Fan Mail In Episode 646, I sit down with Anita Ondine Smith, a writer, lawyer, and sports agent whose work blends deep personal experience with compassionate, practical guidance for families impacted by gambling addiction. Anita writes from the perspective of someone who has lived through the ripple effects of addiction, offering tools people can use immediately to support a loved one without losing themselves. Anita and her husband, former NBA player Randy Livingston, are on a mission to destigmatize conversations about gambling harm. As Anita shares in our conversation, stigma was “the number one impediment” to Randy getting help — and she felt that same shame as the supporter who didn’t know where to turn. We talk about the moment she realized that supporting someone with a gambling addiction requires its own kind of recovery, and how her background with addiction in her own family helped her understand that recovery is possible — even when it takes decades to begin. Anita opens up about: ·      How gambling addiction is often hidden for years— even decades ·      Why today’s world makes gambling more accessible than ever (“a casino in our hand and our pockets everywhere we go”) ·      The difference between responsible gaming and problem gambling ·      Why setting limits is essential — and how some people simply can’t ·      How she learned to set boundaries, communicate clearly, and stop trying to “fix” someone else ·      Why uncomfortable conversations are the key to change ·      How she and Randy talk openly with their children about addiction to break generational stigma Anita also shares the story behind her new book, ASSIST, which she wrote because there were no resources for the supporter — the spouse, partner, parent, or friend living in the orbit of someone with a gambling addiction. She describes it as a menu of options, not a prescription, because every family and every addiction looks different. If you’ve ever loved someone struggling with addiction — or felt alone, ashamed, or unsure how to help — this conversation will give you hope, clarity, and practical tools for moving forward. Episode 645 Parenting Then vs. Now: Crash, Michael Jackson & How the World Changed with Elizabeth “Bizzy” Chance

Send us Fan Mail This weekend I watched Crash on Netflix and the new Michael Jackson movie, and I was struck by how dramatically our world has changed. These two films — one about a teenage girl spiraling through social media, weed culture, and zero boundaries, and the other about Michael Jackson’s discipline, creativity, and complicated childhood — reveal the massive cultural shift we’re living through today. In this episode, I talk about: ·       How social media has replaced real connection ·       Why weed culture is glamorized and consequences ignored ·       Parenting then vs. now — and what happens when kids have no boundaries ·       Michael Jackson’s drive, creativity, and the structure that shaped him ·       What we’ve lost as a culture… and what we can still reclaim From addiction and recovery to family, discipline, and the chaos of modern life, these films shine a light on who we’ve become — and what we’re missing. Episode 644 The Digital Epidemic: What Smartphones Are Doing to Our Kids with Dr. Johann D’Souza

Send us Fan Mail In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Johann D’Souza, a clinical psychologist, Harvard Human Flourishing Program research affiliate, national speaker, and the author of Saving Teens from Toxic Screens. Johann has spent more than 15 years mentoring young people and thousands of hours working directly with families who are struggling with the impact of smartphones, social media, and digital overload. His insights are grounded in both research and real‑world experience, which is why so many parents tell me his message feels both practical and reassuring. We talk about what’s really happening in kids’ brains when they’re constantly on screens, why youth mental health took a sharp turn in 2010, and how today’s teens are spending up to 75% of their waking hours online. Johann explains the rise in anxiety, depression, loneliness, and the loss of basic life skills — and why this generation is facing challenges we’ve never seen before. We also dive into the cultural shift around parenting, the dangers of group chats and pornography exposure, the collapse of imagination, and why so many young people struggle with confidence, communication, and resilience. Johann shares what actually works: reducing accommodations, building tolerance for discomfort, restoring real‑life connection, and helping kids develop the emotional muscles they’re missing. This conversation is eye‑opening, honest, and deeply needed. If you’re a parent, grandparent, educator, or anyone who cares about the next generation, Johann’s perspective will give you clarity, hope, and concrete steps you can start using today. Episode 643 You Can’t Go Over It — You Have to Go Through It with Bizzy

Send us Fan Mail In this Memorial Day episode, I take a moment to reflect on the meaning of the day and the deep gratitude I feel for the soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. I share a personal story from when I was twenty‑two, escorting the families of fallen Desert Storm soldiers in Washington, D.C.—an experience that changed me and has stayed with me ever since. From there, I talk about my own journey of sobriety, personal growth, and the uncomfortable but necessary process of walking through life’s challenges instead of trying to go around them. Over the years, I’ve learned that change is rarely easy, but it’s always possible. The tools I gained in recovery—prayer, meditation, willingness, honesty, and self‑care—continue to guide me through every season of life. I open up about the emotional shifts that come with motherhood, empty‑nesting, and letting go of old stories. And I share how gratitude has become the lens through which I see my life today, even the hard parts. If you’re navigating change, sitting in discomfort, or trying to find your footing again, I hope this episode reminds you that you’re not alone. We can all learn to walk through the hard things with grace, resilience, and a little more love for ourselves. Episode 642 Love, Trauma & Returning to Yourself with Salima Adelstein

Send us Fan Mail In Episode 642, I sit down with Salima Adelstein, the only female Shadhili Sufi guide in the United States, whose life’s work is helping people heal wounded hearts, dissolve inner barriers, and reconnect with the Divine through unconditional love. Raised in a tight‑knit Jewish immigrant family, Salima’s journey took her from special education, hospice work, and alternative healing to a profound spiritual awakening in Jerusalem — where a Sufi master recognized her gifts, gave her the name Salima (“one who carries the peace of God”), and set her on a path of teaching, healing, and guiding others. We explore: ·       How trauma becomes part of your purpose ·       Why resentment lives in the body — and how to release it ·       What spiritual healing looks like in everyday life ·       How to reconnect with God after feeling abandoned ·       Why love is the doorway back to yourself ·       The Sufi understanding of the heart, veils, and inner wisdom ·       How to find peace that doesn’t disappear when life gets hard ·       The power of unconditional love vs. conditional family love Salima also shares the remarkable story of discovering her healing abilities while working with dying children, her father’s miraculous survival, and the moment her entire understanding of God, love, and purpose shifted forever. If you’re navigating resentment, trauma, spiritual disconnection, or the longing to feel whole again, this conversation will meet you right where you are. May 19

Episode 641 Why We Explode: Shame, Hair Disasters & Healing the Heart with Elizabeth “Bizzy” Chance

Send us Fan Mail In today’s solo episode, I’m sharing the real story behind my 47‑color hair disaster — and how it cracked open something much deeper inside me. What looked like frustration about my hair was actually old shame, old wounds, and old stories bubbling up in ways I didn’t expect. I talk about the shame I’ve carried from my past, the “sins” I replay in my mind, and the Catholic guilt that shaped so much of my childhood. I open up about how those buried feelings come out sideways — yelling, snapping, overreacting, or melting down over something as simple as a bad color job. I also share what’s been going on in my heart around my adult kids, the ache of powerlessness, and how anxiety moves through my body from my stomach to my heart. And then I bring it all back to faith, forgiveness, and FUN — including the joy I found reading The Wizard of Oz and reconnecting with that younger, lighter part of myself. This episode is a reminder that we don’t have to carry yesterday into today. We can breathe, identify what’s really going on inside, and return to the light again and again. In this episode, I talk about: Why shame leaks out sidewaysCatholic guilt, confession, and carrying old “sins”Powerlessness over adult childrenAnxiety in the body vs. the heartFaith, forgiveness, and letting God carry the weightFinding fun again — even with bad hairThe Wizard of Oz and reconnecting with joyIf you’re feeling heavy, overwhelmed, or hard on yourself, this episode will help you breathe, soften, and remember you’re not alone. Episode 640 From Iraq to Intuition: Psychic Medium Drew Cali on Sobriety, Loss, and Spiritual Awakening

Send us Fan Mail In Episode 640, I sit down with nationally recognized psychic medium and spiritual teacher Drew Cali, whose journey from a fast‑paced business life to evidential mediumship began only after profound loss, trauma, and the decision to get sober. Drew opens up about his early struggles with addiction, serving in Iraq, losing his mother to cancer, the stillbirth of his daughter, and the suicide of his brother‑in‑law — a series of heartbreaks that pushed him toward therapy, sobriety, and ultimately a spiritual awakening he never expected. We talk about: ·      Drew’s sobriety story and how getting clean opened the door to his intuitive gifts ·      Mediumship as service, not performance — and why groundedness matters ·      Grief, trauma, and the unseen world ·      Imaginary friends, spiritual sensitivity, and childhood intuition ·      Why spirituality and sobriety are inseparable in his life ·      How he learned to trust his abilities after a lifetime of skepticism ·      The moment he realized he was “always at choice” in his healing Drew’s story is raw, real, and deeply human — a reminder that recovery and spiritual connection often rise from the same place: surrender.
