The premise of this podcast is great, and for a long time the banter between the hosts was fun and entertaining; but along the way I slowly became more and more annoyed with the podcast and it’s hosts.
I finally hit my point of non enjoyment during the James Bond/Godzilla draft episode. The commentary from Joanna and Sam had especially become mean and spiteful towards the series, and I’m tired of Ryan constantly sounding like an apologist for the series as a whole.
Honestly, if Sam and Joanna aren’t enjoying the series, just stop. Joanna’s vapidness and casual spite, Sam’s mocking belligerence, and Ryan’s dopey, halfhearted attempts to defend the series from two people clearly not enjoying themselves is too much. It’s not fun anymore, it’s just mean, mocking, and condescending.
It’s especially sad because this podcast started out with such promise given the dearth of Godzilla related podcast content. I was originally hopeful that this would be an example of how to introduce people into kaiju films, this podcast just reinforces my hesitation to introduce people into something I deeply love because of fear of ridicule.
The only reason I’m not giving this a one-star review is because of the hopeful feeling it gave me in the early days of the show. The giant red flag of liking Godzilla’98 out of spite towards the rest of the series, despite it containing all of the things they constantly rail against in the rest of the series, only delivered by people who had no passion for the property and were there just to make a purely cold, lifeless, corporate film, just because Matthew Broderick is in it; who is as wooden as a board and turns in an awful performance to boot.
That should’ve been my point to bail from the podcast, but I had been charmed by the early episodes so I stuck with it. It’s all downhill from there. I can’t listen to the casual spitefulness vomited by Sam and Joanna anymore, or to Ryan’s tolerance of it.
Turn away while you can G-fans, it’s not worth the effort.
