Reel Spooky Series 2026 Presents: Lisa Frankenstein — A Coming-of-RAGE Love Story

Joshua Hunter continues the Reel Spooky Series with Lisa Frankenstein, the feature debut for Zelda Williams, written by Diablo Cody. Set in 1989, the film follows Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), a misunderstood goth teen who accidentally brings her ideal Victorian-era crush (Cole Sprouse) back to life as a reanimated corpse — kicking off a murderous, darkly romantic journey to piece together both his body and their relationship. Joshua breaks down whether Cody's signature mean-streak humor and Williams' offbeat visual style actually mesh into something cohesive, digs into the film's 80s-drenched production design, and gives his honest verdict on whether this one earns its cult-classic potential or gets lost in the shuffle of a very crowded Frankenstein revival year. 🍍 The Reel Pineapple is your one-stop shop for honest movie reviews, trailer breakdowns, and unfiltered film talk — no hype, no gatekeeping, just reel takes from someone who actually loves this stuff. 📺 Subscribe on YouTube: youtube.com/thereelpineapple 🦋 Follow on BlueSky: reelpineapple.bsky.social 🎥 Follow on TikTok & Instagram: @jhunterreelpineapple 🎬 Follow on Letterboxd: BlackShazam 🎮 Catch me live on Twitch: twitch.tv/thereelpineapple ⭐ Love the show? Reel Scary Series 2026 Presents: 🎬 Ready or Not 2 Review — Raising the Stakes, Raising the Body Count

Joshua Hunter continues the Reel Spooky Series with Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, the Radio Silence-directed sequel that picks up moments after Grace (Samara Weaving) survives the Le Domas family's deadly game — only to discover the stakes just got a whole lot higher. Teamed up with her estranged sister Faith (Kathryn Newton), Grace must now survive four rival families hunting her with world changing ramifications, with Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Cronenberg, and Elijah Wood joining the carnage. Joshua breaks down whether this bigger, bloodier sequel escalates the fun chaos of the original or loses what made it work. Reel Spooky Series 2026 Presents: Ready or Not Review-Til Death (Literally) Do Us Part

Joshua Hunter continues the Reel Spooky Series with Ready or Not, the 2019 horror-comedy from Radio Silence (the duo behind Abigail and the recent Scream films), starring Samara Weaving as Grace, a new bride who learns on her wedding night that marrying into the wealthy Le Domas family means playing a deadly game — hide and seek, where losing means dying, and "til death do us part" takes on a whole new meaning. Joshua's joined this episode by Nick Taylor, co-host of The Afternoon Tune, for a chaotic, blood-soaked breakdown of the film. Together they dig into Weaving's breakout performance, the film's sharp class-satire undertones, and whether this darkly funny home-invasion-in-reverse earns its spot as one of the best horror-comedies of the last decade & potentially a yearly rewatch. Reel Spooky Series 2026 Presents: Monsters, Inc. — A Spooky Season Classic With a Heart

Joshua Hunter continues the Reel Spooky Series with Monsters, Inc., Pixar's 2001 classic about Sulley (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), two monsters working the night shift at a scare factory powered by children's screams — until a human toddler named Boo accidentally slips into their world and makes them question everything. Joshua breaks down why this one still holds up as one of Pixar's most inventive, heartfelt premises over two decades later, digs into the film's surprisingly clever world-building (energy crisis and all), and if the film lives up to the hype(somehow, this is a first time watch for me). Reel Spooky Series 2026 Presents: Heretic Review— Let's Talk about Religion

Joshua Hunter reviews Heretic, the A24 horror-thriller from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, starring Hugh Grant against type as Mr. Reed — a charming, seemingly harmless man who invites two young Mormon missionaries played by Sophie Thatcher & Chloe East into his home, only to trap them in a deadly game of faith & doubt. Joshua breaks down how Grant flips his beloved rom-com charm into something genuinely terrifying that might be a career best performance, and digs into how the film uses religious debate as the engine for its tension instead of jump scares. Reel Spooky Series 2026 Presents: Azrael Review — A Post-Apocalyptic Silent Night

Joshua Hunter reviews Azrael, the dialogue-free action-horror film from director E.L. Katz & writer Simon Barrett, starring Samara Weaving as the title character in a world overrun by demonic, flesh-hungry creatures known as the Burned Ones. Hunted by a mute, devout community intent on sacrificing her to an ancient evil, Azrael refuses to go quietly into the silent night. Joshua breaks down whether this silent-film approach to horror actually heightens the tension or just leaves the story feeling thin, digs into Weaving's committed, dialogue-free performance, and gives his honest verdict on whether this genre experiment earns its cult-favorite status. Reel Spooky Series 2026 Presents: 🧺👹 Portal to Hell — Washing Machines and Dark Bargains 🔥😈

Today's  Reel Spooky Series entry is Portal to Hell, Woody Bess's indie horror-comedy about Dunn (Trey Holland), a mundane debt collector whose life gets flipped upside down when he discovers a portal to hell hiding behind the washing machines at his local laundromat. When a demon named Chip (Richard Kind) shows up to drag Dunn's neighbor Mr. Bobshank (Keith David) to hell over an unpaid debt, Dunn strikes a dark bargain to intervene — three souls in exchange for his neighbor's freedom. Joshua breaks down whether this absurdist, deadpan take on demonic bureaucracy earns the Drag Me to Hell comparisons it's been getting on the festival circuit, digs into the scene-stealing performances from Kind and David, and gives his honest verdict on whether this Slamdance breakout deserves a bigger spotlight. Shoutout to friend of the show Romina D'Ugo, who is awesome in not just this but also in I Like Movies. If you haven't caught her breakout performance in Byeeee yet, go fix that — it's some of the best, most fearless work he's covered all year; my review of it is up on the channel now. Reel Spooky Series 2026 Presents: MaXXXine Review— The strongest entry in Ti West's X Trilogy?

Joshua Hunter reviews MaXXXine, writer-director Ti West's blood-soaked conclusion to his X trilogy, starring Mia Goth as Maxine Minx, the sole survivor of X's massacre, now chasing stardom in a sleazy 1985 Hollywood. As Maxine finally gets her big break in the adult film industry, a mysterious killer known as the Night Stalker starts picking off aspiring starlets across the city — and Maxine's dark past threatens to catch up with her.   Joshua breaks down whether this 1980s-set finale (backed by a stacked cast including Kevin Bacon, Elizabeth Debicki, and Halsey) sticks the landing after X and Pearl, and gives his honest verdict on whether Goth's trilogy-closing performance earns all the hype.
