    Riffs

    Riffs are pieces of music designed to catch your ear so you will recognise a song before any lyrics are sung. Two of the ‘catchiest’ riffs are in the Rolling Stone’s (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction and The Animal’s House Of The Rising Sun. Prominent also are the riffs in Dire Strait’s Money For Nothing and Heart’s driving riff on Barracuda. Considered one of the greatest rock n roll songs of all time Chuck Berry’s Johnny B Goode has a most recognisable riff.     Instruments

    Musical instruments perform an important binding medium for songs. Emotion and mood can be communicated through the use of different instruments and the right instrument can make a song stand out by giving the listener a lingering auditory sensation.  So, for this week’s playlist we pay tribute to and focus on various INSTRUMENTS that give a song its uniqueness.  The Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Electro-Theremin, Electromechanical keyboard, Harmonica, Electronic keyboard, Tambourine, Bagpipe, Dulcimer, Glockenspiel, Saxophone and Harpsichord are the main features.     Concerts and Music Festivals

    This week Rob is joined by guest presenter Simon. The theme revolves around films of concerts and music festivals. Starting off is The Cure from their concert film The Cure In Orange featuring their big hit Close To Me. Probably the most lauded concert film was The Band’s: The Last Waltz. A highlight was their version of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. The film of the famous pop festival Woodstock showcased Neil Young’s introduction into Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young for their epic Suite :Judy Blue Eyes. The Aussie answer to Woodstock was the Sunbury Pop Festival in the early seventies. Very few female singers took part. Karen and Richard Carpenter departed from their usual style to produce/perform their magnum opus Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft. Michael Jackson’s Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough and the Eagle’s Hotel California are two longer classics.
