The Flagship: Dissecting Longhorns' QB position, what to make of Texas baseball's 0-3 start

The Flagship: Dissecting Longhorns' QB position, what to make of Texas baseball's 0-3 start

Texas football is less than one month out from the start of spring practice and the Longhorns enter this spring with a QB battle, which marks the first time in several years for the team to not have a proven option at QB. On this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes weigh in on what Texas has at quarterback in likely starter Casey Thompson and QB2 Hudson Card. The hosts discuss all both QBs have to offer the program and why fans should hold off on taking one side or the other regarding the started with Steve Sarkisian in charge of the offense. The Flagship also discusses Texas baseball's concerning start to the year after going 0-3 in the first weekend series of the 2021 season, and why fans should pause on throwing in the towel on this team. The hosts then shift their focus to the basketball team after the Longhorns second-half comeback against Kansas last night. After a quick break, The Flagship returns with the weekly 'Love it or Leave it' segment, with this week's topics focused on what to like about Casey Thompson, where the level of concern is for the baseball program and what to think of the basketball team's identity as the Longhorns make their way towards the Big 12 tournament and March Madness.

The Flagship: Father of Texas QB Casey Thompson weighs in on Steve Sarkisian, new staff and more

The Flagship: Father of Texas QB Casey Thompson weighs in on Steve Sarkisian, new staff and more

In this week's interview episode of The Flagship Podcast, we talk to Charles Thompson, the former Oklahoma quarterback and father to Texas quarterback Casey Thompson.
Of course, we discuss Casey's glowing performance in the Alamo Bowl, when Thompson came in for an injured Sam Ehlinger in the second half and led five straight scoring drives, including four touchdown passes, while completing 8-of-10 passes.
With Casey Thompson in the game, Texas turned a 17-10 halftime lead into a 55-23 rout of Colorado.
We talk to Charles about Casey's leadership style now that Ehlinger is gone and how life has been with Steve Sarkisian as the new coach of the Longhorns.
Charles also goes in depth about Casey's work habits as a quarterback after having a father who played at the highest level of college football (including leading then-No. 2 Oklahoma over then-No. 1 Nebraska in 1987) as well as an older brother (Kendall) who played at OU and Utah before signing with Washington in the NFL.
Charles, who had his own issues off the field at Oklahoma, said he appreciates how Sarkisian has talked about being humbled and overcoming adversity in his own life to gain another chance as a head coach at a top college program.
Charles Thompson, who still helps runs football camps through Football University (FBU), said he's hearing buzz from other coaches in the business that Texas has their attention with the staff Sarkisian has put together.
We also talk to Charles Thompson about the things he's most excited about heading into spring football (March 23).

The Flagship: Insider scoop from winter workouts, Texas lands 5-star QB commit

The Flagship: Insider scoop from winter workouts, Texas lands 5-star QB commit

The first workout with the new Texas coaching staff went down late last week, and to say it wasn't easy would be an understatement. But from the early sound of it, the Longhorns came out of the grueling workout with a much different attitude than what the team previously would have under the former regime.
On this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes weigh in with some insider notes from the first complete workout with Steve Sarkisian and his staff present, and give their thoughts on what we're hearing from sources close to the players that should give Texas fans hope for where the team's buy-in is early on in the Sarkisian era in Austin. The Flagship discusses the changes in the offseason training program before shifting focus to the 2021 football schedule, which was released by the Big 12 Conference this week.
The Longhorns will have a bit of a rough start to the season with seven straight games to kickoff the season, which includes facing some of the tougher opponents in the conference during that span. The Flagship also weighs in on the Longhorns' recent commitments in five-star QB Maalik Murphy and three-star linebacker Trevell Johnson, which is the perfect introduction to this week's Love it or Leave it segment, as the hosts discuss why fans should be excited about the commitment of Murphy.
Love it or leave it also mentions what Murphy's pledge means for the recruitment of five-star dual-threat QB Quinn Ewers, why Texas special teams coordinator Jeff Banks is so highly regarded in college football and the level of concern for Texas hoops as the Longhorns make their way towards the NCAA tournament.
Catch all of that and much more on this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast.
