To be seen in our truth is powerful for all people but especially for people of color. And one way of achieving sight and insight is by asking and answering the right questions. Erica Howard answers some hard questions about race and what it means to be alive in such times as these and those answers reveal the commonalities and the shared experience of being Black in America regardless of the era. “That moment when you decide who you are and who you are not,” recalls Erica when answering when she first became aware of racism. This defining incident along with others is captured with clarity and contextualization in what is referred to as the “Steak N Shake” moments, a period in her teenage life when she got her first job waitressing in a predominantly white area of Southern Illinois. Naked Conversations allows us to reflect on our own experiences while listening to a honest conversation between friends of differing racial background but shared empathy for what it means to be alive and connecting with others.
