This week, co-hosts Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are talking about late-stage capitalism, the impossibly high standards of being a lesbian in 2026, and the viral controversy surrounding The Last Ditch, a COVID-conscious lesbian bar in Greenfield, Massachusetts. The Last Ditch discourse has taken social media by storm, and we wouldn't be a responsible lesbian podcast if we didn't talk about it. Leigh actually used to live in Western Mass, and it's impossible to understand what happened without considering the local culture. People move to the Pioneer Valley for a reason, and the viral Boston Globe article (which reads like The Onion but is somehow real) has put this tiny queer community under a microscope that glosses over that context. It's a very specific brand of lesbian and queer person who settles in the area, and the dynamics aren't necessarily comparable to larger LGBTQ+ communities like LA or NYC. That said, there's plenty here that applies to the greater queer community. We'd be remiss if we didn't discuss the polycule breakdown, the clown college situation, and the white progressive pearl-clutching of it all. When The Last Ditch announced one mask-optional night a week to stay financially afloat, the backlash escalated from an Instagram announcement and a therapist-mediated town hall to hate crime accusations and even a public comment wishing for the bar to be firebombed. Firebombing should not be step one! And we're saying this as people who still take COVID precautions and wear masks in various situations. There were so many opportunities for an open community discussion about accessibility and the bar's financial struggles, but instead we got a perfect example of what happens when we leave absolutely no room for nuance. It sucks that we live under late-stage capitalism, but we cannot ignore reality. The Last Ditch's owner is reportedly living in her car because of the debt she's taken on trying to keep the bar open, yet proposing one mask-optional night has people sending her death threats. Our society runs on women's unpaid emotional labor, and patriarchy doesn't magically disappear within the LGBTQ+ community. Lesbian bars are expected to meet every community need, provide endless care and accessibility, and somehow remain financially sustainable, while gay men's bars aren't asked to shoulder any of that responsibility. A gay men's bar could make the exact same decision without being expected to answer for the failures of an entire society. There are already so few lesbian bars left in the United States, and we'll keep losing them if we don't actually show up and support them. We cannot jump straight to canceling a queer-owned business over one misstep. We're all human, many of us are neurodivergent, and maybe we all need to touch grass and have a little empathy for a woman who's doing her best to serve her community while also trying not to be literally homeless. The people we need to be fighting are not each other. Having this discourse coexist with the Cornell 7 controversy is honestly breaking our brains. The double standard in how society excuses appalling behavior from men while holding women to impossible standards is staggering. Accessible queer spaces are essential, but so is keeping them open. We have to make room for both without expecting lesbian bars to somehow operate outside the financial realities of late-stage capitalism. We want to hear your thoughts! SBG 172: The Greatest Showman

Now we’re trying to hit 100 $10/month patrons by November 1st, which means we need 40 more! It costs about $800/month minimum just to produce Lez Hang Out, and while we don’t currently pay ourselves, we do want to keep paying our Production Assistant, Kristin, who keeps approximately 700,000 things running behind the scenes. One of the most direct ways to support the pod is to join our Patreon for $10/month (and choose annual billing for a discount!). One of us! One of us! You can also rep the pod with Lez Hang Out merch. ****************************************** Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast where the gays get to be in the room even when Hollywood would rather hide us backstage. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about why the 2017 musical The Greatest Showman Should’ve Been Gay. All circuses are inherently queer and this circus is no exception. We’ve got outsiders finding their people, Lettie the Bearded Lady (Keala Settle) choosing to fully embrace herself, and This Is Me, which may be one of the gayest songs ever put on film. Meanwhile, PT Barnum (Hugh Jackman) is busy exploiting the very people who make his show a success, and somehow Hollywood straightwashes him into the hero he never was. We’re getting into Jenny Lind (Rebecca Ferguson) and Charity (Michelle Williams)’s VERY interesting chemistry, the forbidden-love duet that desperately needed a lesbian rewrite, and our theory that PT and Phillip (Zac Efron) are one lingering eye contact away from this becoming a very different movie. Then Jenny Lind arrives, PT is practically levitating over her performance, and she somehow thinks he’s into her. Jenny, babe, he’s looking at you like you just walked onstage at Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour. Phillip is right there, but apparently the movie’s gaydar is on airplane mode. For a movie about outsiders, The Greatest Showman sure does spend a lot of time telling PT Barnum’s story while giving us surprisingly little of the people who actually make the circus worth watching. We barely know half their names, let alone who they are beyond the spectacle. Nearly a decade later, we’re still asking: why does the garbage man get the hero edit? We know one thing for sure, The Greatest Showman Should’ve Been Gay. Give us your own answers to our Q & Gay and follow along on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and BlueSky @lezhangoutpod. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) is joined by award-winning author, KB Brookins (@earthtokb), for a discussion about their 2025 Lambda Award Winning debut memoir, Pretty, now available in paperback!  In Pretty, KB explores the complicated gap between how we see ourselves and how the world sees us. Part memoir, part cultural critique, it’s a love letter to Black trans masculinity and a powerful call for all humans to question the assumptions and expectations we inherit from being raised within a structurally racist, cisheteronormative society. Using a mix of poetry and prose, KB reflects on growing up in the ’90s and 2000s, when “no homo” was a punchline, “that’s so gay” was a common insult, same-sex marriage was still illegal, and the language available for understanding queer and trans identities was often limited, stigmatizing, or outright harmful.  Honestly, Emma Specter of Vogue said it perfectly already–Pretty, “at its heart is a carefully sketched-out–and often devastating–portrait of what it means to be Black and transmasculine in Texas, a state that continues to criminalize both of those identities”.   While today’s greater visibility of trans and nonbinary identities gives people more opportunities to question, explore, and understand themselves, KB’s journey was also shaped by the specific cultural expectations and assumptions attached to being perceived as a Black girl in Texas. Pretty traces that winding process of unlearning those expectations, questioning who they were told they should be, and ultimately finding the freedom to recognize themselves as the Black transmasculine person they have always been inside. Don’t forget to support your local bookstores by snagging your own copy of Pretty at Bookshop.org.  Lez Hang Out is an independently produced show. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about why the 2002 box office smash hit, Scooby-Doo, Should’ve Been Gay. If you, like us, are a gay of a certain age, this live action version of the classic cartoon has lived rent free in your head ever since you first laid eyes on Linda Cardellini as Velma.  The Mystery Incorporated polycule has been wrecking villains’ plans since 1969! Every iteration of Scooby-Doo from that very first cartoon onward has gotten gayer and gayer– to the point that Velma is canonically a lesbian in 2022’s Trick or Treat, Scooby-Doo. And we would have had gay Velma on our screens much, much earlier if it hadn’t been for those meddling homophobes in Hollywood #releasethekiss. The fact that a kiss between Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Daphne and Linda Cardellini’s Velma was filmed and then hidden from us for 24 years is a hate crime against the queer community. We have never recovered. We may never recover. We ride at dawn. We know one thing for sure, Scooby-Doo Should’ve Been Gay. This week, co-hosts Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) reminisce about the past ten years, beginning with the airport phone call that started it all.  Lez be honest, it’s been an absolute rollercoaster of a decade. Queer media and fandom have changed almost beyond recognition. Weekly releases, longer seasons, queer-focused conventions, sapphic shows, and highly engaged casts once gave fandoms room to grow. It wasn’t perfect. Hollywood still loved burying our gays once we got attached; but at least we had them. Now, queer characters are harder to find, seasons are shorter, and if we do get a queer show, there’s a good chance it won’t even make it to season two.  We have been yelling about the importance of positive LGBTQ+ representation on screen for literally 10 years. If you have been with us from the beginning, we’d love to hear from you!  Find us on Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, Tiktok and Bluesky (@lezhangoutpod) or email us at lezhangoutpod@gmail.com and let us know your favorite (and least favorite) episodes, moments, guests, or events. SBG 170: Lemonade Mouth with Franco Stevens and Jen Rainin of The Curve Foundation

Pride Month may be over, but we’re still here, queer, and full of existential fear. Lez Hang Out Podcast is unfortunately quite an expense to produce and much of our funding comes from our incredible supporters over on Patreon. You can help us keep our little indie pod afloat for another season by joining our Patreon family at the $5/month tier or higher and unlock our growing library of full-length ad-free bonus episodes, ad-free weekly episodes, mp3 downloads of all our original songs, exclusive Discord access to hang out with us, and more! Get an automatic discount on your membership by selecting an annual subscription at checkout.  You can also support the pod by shopping small at bit.ly/lezmerch & picking up our Lez-ssentials songs on Bandcamp. Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that is coming to you live from detention.  This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with the co-founders of The Curve Foundation (@curvefdn), Franco Stevens (@frankostevens), the founder of Curve Magazine (@curvemag), and wife, filmmaker Jen Rainin (@franklyspeakingfilms), and talk about why the Disney Channel Original Movie, Lemonade Mouth, Should’ve Been Gay. With Hayley Kiyoko’s directorial debut, Girls Like Girls, currently playing in theaters, we thought it would be fun to take a trip back to 2011 when a young Hayley Kiyoko rocked the stage (and an aggressively asymmetrical bob) as Stella.  Lemonade Mouth is actually the first DCOM that Franco and Jen have ever seen! We are delighted to have opened this door for them to the tween-Hallmark Movie experience. But even for a DCOM, Lemonade Mouth is on another level when it comes to being a queerer Breakfast Club with flip-phones. Hayley Kiyoko’s lesbian-coded “Stella” isn’t even the gayest thing about this movie, and she’s literally an anticapitalist vegetarian teenager with a rock band.  We know one thing for sure, Lemonade Mouth Should’ve Been Gay. How do your favorite lesbian movies and tv shows hold up against The Curve Test?  Give us your own answers to our Q & Gay on Instagram and follow along on Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and BlueSky @lezhangoutpod. Email us @lezhangoutpod@gmail.com. Connect with us individually: Ellie Brigida (@elliebrigida). Leigh Holmes Foster (@lshfoster). This is our final episode for Season 9.
