    Episode 208 – The 9 to 5 Grind (Anime NYC 2026)

The thumbnail isn't for a discussion about Bleach, it's just how we're all feeling after this week. Yes, again. Tired and worn out and sad, yet we carry on because we live to fight and survive. And part of that survival comes with taking our minds off of the world at large with a few hours of anime and manga discussion, and in this case it's with talking about Anime NYC from last weekend and all of the announcements that came from it, from all the manga and light novel pickups to Netflix announcing dates for Edgerunners 2 and Fool Night, along with everything in between. There are also some more puff pieces about Crunchyroll worth tearing apart because have you seen their new online store lately? It's bad, it's so bad that both AnimEigo AND Sentai are cracking jokes about it. We'll talk about the One Piece character rankings next time, as well. Time constraints meant we couldn't do it this time. intro - a very rotten week 10:13 - the updated Crunchyroll store SUCKS 17:28 - Crunchyroll’s latest Variety PR puff pieces 28:57 - Anime NYC rundown (American Manga Awards, Viz x RetroCrush, VHD Bloodlust, a LOT of books) 1:42:38 - other news items (Naruto at NYCC, Kingdom Hearts anime, One Piece Day announcements) 2:16:58 - home video releases (Yaiba, Non Non Biyori, CR steelbooks) Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.

    Episode 207 – Sony, You’re Making Us F**king Hostile (Otakon 2026)

We're all mad at Sony for ALL of the reasons right now. But we're not mad at Discotek since they and AnimEigo alike offer everyone really cool things and actually treat their customers like people, unlike Sony who treats people with contempt and locks their store behind a paid Crunchyroll subscription. We're also not mad at Anime Limited for getting Banana Fish and committing to put it on a disc sometime soon, unlike Sony who would rather get rid of discs the for the glory and benefit of their spreadsheet-loving C-suite. And we're also not mad at the Criterion Channel service for getting Neon Genesis Evangelion on their platform next month (ADV dub included, per reports) since they know people like old things, unlike Sony who will gladly let old things lapse so people can't get them anymore. The point is, we're mad at Sony. But we're not mad at other folks and other companies. Enjoy our show where we offer both the yin and yang of this mess of an industry. And say hi to Sketch on this show on your way in. intro - Paramount doesn’t care about Avatar 11:32 - F Sony, Part 1: The Games Nonsense (PS5 discs, the industry as a whole) 33:57 - F Sony, Part 2: The Crunchyroll Nonsense (CR store paywall, Black Lagoon and more are gone) 48:39 - Discotek Day, Part 1: The AnimEigo Opening Act (Rune Explorers, ReLIFE) 1:01:54 - Discotek Day, Part 2: Good Guys Still Wear Hats (Big O, Penguindrum, Digimon Frontier, Patlabor, Memories 4K, Samurai Pizza Cats HD) 1:48:21 - The other news bits (EVA on Criterion Channel, new Gundam, Virgin Punk digital release, Anime Limited licenses Banana Fish) 2:17:30 - The brief home video rundown (Big O, Penguindrum, Toradora, One Piece, Dr. Stone) past episodes for reference: #92: Memories #206: AnimEigo at Anime Expo Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.

Episode 206 – Tender Age In Bloom (AX 2026)

Another weekend of Anime Expo has come and gone, and with it came a LOT of things from all corners, a true cornucopia of styles for just about everyone: take your pick, be it green yuri with Nirvana or nice boats with School Days... yes, really, as well as plenty of manga to come later this year and next year, TRIGGER leading us on with the fourth Imaishi/Nakashima project coming soon, AnimEigo giving everyone an appetizer plate before Discotek takes over Otakon, a first look at the new Star Wars Visions project, and some info on Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 as was always planned (ahem ahem) and the reveal of more STEEL BALL RUN coming in the fall so everyone can stop breathing down Netflix's necks. (They haven't, they're still asking for more.) And if ALL OF THAT isn't enough, the first hour of this show has plenty of pre and post AX news items worth talking about, like some classic (and modern classic) movies coming back to theaters, new projects from Madhouse, Sunrise and SHAFT, and Kasagi Lobo coming very soon, a new middleman company in AniBiz launching, BANANA FISH leaving Amazon for Netflix and with a new (made by humans) English dub, the return of an old "online" title and also the unexpected return of an old "galactic" friend via Kickstarter (link down in the description) to make this a very long show that will hold all of you over until Otakon next month. (After this one, we all kinda need a break.) intro - an amazing(ly long) show awaits 7:56 - pre and post-AX news items (Akira back in theaters, Annecy Festival, AniBiz company launched, Tenchi Galaxy Kickstarter details) 1:01:06 - Anime Expo Day 1 (Square Enix, Aniplex, Kodansha) 1:29:21 - AX Day 2 (AnimEigo, Yen Press, Crunchyroll, Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2) 2:11:56 - AX Day 3 (Denpa, TRIGGER, Netflix, Seven Seas) 2:47:53 - AX Day 4 (Tokyopop, GKIDS) 2:51:02 - home video releases (Tekkonkinkreet 4K, Revue Starlight) Kickstarter link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/armigerentertainment/tenchi-galaxy-anime-pilot Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.

Episode 205 – Some Kind of Monster

So who or what is the "monster" in this title? It's whoever you want it to be, be it the former head of Kadokawa trying to sue his way back into relevancy or the people wanting to hunt down Denji in the new Chainsaw Man arc (coming... in three years, probably), or the head of MAPPA for his continued misdeeds, or the former Crunchyroll marketing executive slithering his way back to work with SNK, or even the promise of Monster coming to Blu-ray in August. Or even Crunchyroll for their failure in promoting anything from Given, there are a lot of monsters out there. It's all up to you to decide, really. And on this, our final show before Anime Expo, it's a bit more of the same with the usual rundown of things, some good and some bad and some perplexing down the middle. Just remember to live with joy in the face of adversity and crisis, like the wonderful Scots did in Boston last week. We WILL live beyond the cretins of the universe. past episodes for reference: #138 - the Kadokawa bribery scandal #139 - more on the Kadokawa bribery scandal #183 - the Bloomberg piece about Crunchyroll intro - joy in the face of everything 9:51 - news items (Kadokawa bribery scandal update, Kiki’s Delivery Service live-action project, SNK media projects, Astra Awards nominations) 40:57 - announcements (MAPPA event, movies on Crunchyroll, Tatsunoko series on HIDIVE, upcoming theater runs) 1:41:28 - home video releases (Suzume 4K, Your Name 4K, Jinsei, Monster) Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.

Episode 204 – There Goes My Hero (Academia)

Another year, another Crunchyroll awards show that only the influencers and most terminally online folks actually care about. We're not some of those people, but we talked about it anyway because it's just our routine to talk and kvetch about it. But there are other things worth talking about, like some industry financials heading down a bit, GKIDS nabbing The Adolescence of Utena for theaters next month, Macross DYRL getting its first stateside screening at Anime Expo, Katsuhiro Otomo launching a new animation studio, and other things both good and bad. As is also our routine at this point. Thanks for putting up with the wonky schedule as of late. We're trying our best to keep things somewhat steady. Here's an actual awards show from our friends at Dub Talk you should pay attention to, in the meantime: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFiruYsAlY0 intro - talking about anything but the CR awards 9:19 - talking about the CR awards 34:00 - news items (memoriams, industry financials, Otomo's new studio, Macross DYRL @ AX) 1:01:58 - announcements (Dorohedoro S3, Adolescence of Utena in theaters) 1:39:13 - home video releases (Dragon Maid movie, Dragonball Daima, Sentai rereleases, Wind Breaker, Rooster Fighter) Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.

Episode 203 – Reduce Them All to Bones

Apologies, once again, for the delay in this show going up due to a combination of scheduling issues and some illnesses roaming around. But we're back to catch up on the big things in the industry, from a big slate of One Piece coming out for Netflix to said industry's supposed next big thing in Kagurabachi coming next year, along with a plethora of fun things like a sports manga with real MLB players, laughing and yelling at Wit for using AI slop, pining over The Ribbon Hero and lamenting over whatever Crunchyroll has planned for their newly announced "industry summit" before NYCC. All of that and a bag of chips on top, you all know the drill by now. Also... against our better judgement, we're probably going to talk about the Crunchyroll Anime Awards again. I know, I know, but it's easy "content" and all. intro - illnesses and the world still suck 3:03 - the big things (a lot of One Piece, Kagurabachi anime in 2027, The Ribbon Hero) 49:54 - the other things (Wit caught in the AI slop, Reze Arc on CR, more QuintQuint coming, Tekkonkinkreet in theaters from GKIDS) 1:44:32 - the home video things (Sailor Moon Crystal, All You Need Is Kill, Witch Watch, Patlabor OVA, Re:ZERO) Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.

Episode 202 – Somewhere in Time at AnimeJapan

AnimeJapan has come and gone, and with it came the expected deluge of too much stuff to go over, but we did and we made sure to not leave out any important things for this year's rundown of the convention. Hopefully. It's been a bit hectic lately, things may slip from time to time. But along with that, we've FINALLY got some clarification for this whole Steel Ball Run rollout mess, even more new seasons announced after AnimeJapan like Frieren and Ranma 1/2, another case of studio consolidation with Lay-Duce's new owners, a quick look at the Anime Trending awards before doing another expected gawk-and-gander at Crunchyroll's schmooze-fest of an "awards" show - we know, we know, but it's just so easy for content. We're as guilty as all the rest. Also, going forward: whenever something gets mentioned from a past episode, that episode will now be linked. It'll make some missing context make more sense. past episodes for reference: #97 - Tokyo Babylon 2021 #104 - Saga of Tanya the Evil #178 - Rascal dub fiasco #186 - Suikoden anime announcement intro - the shortest intro ever 1:15 - the AnimeJapan prelude: Osaka, the top 10, and JoJo 23:40 - all the AnimeJapan stuff (Kindergarten Wars, Sparks of Tomorrow, July and October premieres) 1:06:55 - the news item buffer zone (Mao on Hulu, Frieren S3 in 2027, Lay-Duce acquired by Hayate) 1:44:44 - yet another CR Anime Awards kvetch-fest 2:21:00 - home video releases (DANDADAN S2, Rock is a Lady’s Modesty, Dr. Stone) Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.

Episode 201 – Never Entertain the Taste of Scarlet

This is a weirder show than most, on account of the vast mood shifts with all of the topic at hand here. There's a not-so-good amount of bad news to dive into, be it from the unfortunate winner of the WBD bidding war and... ALL of the horribleness from Shogakukan's editorial department that will definitely be upsetting to a lot of people for a lot of reasons. But we've got some good movies in the HYPNOSISMIC interactive concert event, the Umamusume sequel movie, and Cosmic Princess Kaguya on Netflix... and then there's Scarlet. Poor, poor Scarlet. It never stood a chance. And then there's more Evangelion on the horizon because of course there is, some plans for a Samurai Champloo live action project, Netflix doing not-terrible things for ONCE, and some future plans from Discotek and AnimEigo... for better AND for worse. See you next time for AnimeJapan. Stay safe out there. intro - everything burns 3:12 - three good movies and Scarlet 25:30 - ALL of the bad news (WBD, Crunchyroll, Seven Seas, Shogakukan) 51:30 - some not-bad news (Evangelion, Steeel Ball Run dub cast, Samurai Champloo live action project, Akane-Banashi on YouTube) 1:37:44 - home video releases (The Apothecary Diaries, Heavy Metal L-Gaim, future Discotek and AnimEigo titles) Additional sources: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2026-02-28/shogakukan-apologizes-for-releasing-new-manga-by-creator-convicted-of-sex-crime-against-minor/.234765 https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2026-03-02/shogakukan-discloses-it-hired-act-age-writer-tatsuya-matsuki-to-pen-new-manga-on-manga-one/.234819 https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2026-03-10/plaintiff-in-manga-creator-shoichi-yamamoto-sexual-abuse-case-releases-statement/.235104 https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2026-02-13/anime-in-2025-is-the-crunchyroll-cage-real/.233196 https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2026-03-06/a-niche-of-their-own-diving-into-the-top-anime-titles-by-streaming-platform/.233832 Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.
