Talk Heathen 10.43 with Scott Dickie and ObjectivelyDan

In today's episode of Talk Heathen, Scott Dickie, ObjectivelyDan, and Jamie The Blind Limey tackle the thorny question of objective versus subjective morality, divine command theory, and whether free will is just a convenient excuse for God's inaction. Donald in LA argues that while most moral systems are subjective, we should still pursue objective morality. He proposes it would need eternal consequences and be tied to consciousness, though he admits he can't actually define what it is. If you can't define objective morality, how do you know you're pursuing it? What does eternal consequence have to do with whether something is objectively right or wrong? The hosts explore whether chasing an undefined standard makes any sense at all. Craig on TikTok defends objective morality grounded in God and inalienable rights, claiming subjective morality leads to might makes right. He argues objective standards protect against tyranny and provide a basis for correcting societal wrongs. But if God's morality is objective, why does it change so much across denominations and throughout history? Does invoking God actually solve the problem, or just move it one step back? The conversation digs into whether divine command theory offers the clarity Craig thinks it does. James in OH discusses how theists excuse God for bad things by invoking free will. The hosts explore whether the Bible actually supports free will, examine the trolley problem, and debate whether the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one. If God values free will so much, why does he intervene sometimes but not others? Does free will really justify divine inaction in the face of suffering? Thank you for joining us this week!
