    Exploring Sam's House: 150 Years of Merritt Island History

    Step back into Old Florida and explore Sam's House on Merritt Island, one of the most fascinating historic homes in Brevard County, Florida.In 1875, John H. Sams built a small 600-square-foot cabin. In 1878, the cabin was deconstructed, floated up the Indian River Lagoon from Eau Gallie, and reassembled at its present location on Merritt Island. The cabin became home to a family of 4 adults and 6 children.The original cabin had three rooms and later served as a school, church, and workshop.In 1888, the Sams family built the larger 1,260-square-foot Florida vernacular home that stands beside the cabin today.
