Luxfilmfest Podcast #7 - Masterclass: Mike Leigh (EN)

English director Mike Leigh, the living legend of European social realism, returned to Luxembourg after directing “Pirates of Penzance” at the Philharmonie Luxembourg Concert Hall in 2015 and joined the Luxembourg City Film Festival’s masterclass line-up. Awarded a Golden Leopard in Locarno for his first feature, “Bleak Moments” (1971), Mike Leigh waited 17 years before returning to his trademark social satire with “High Hopes” (1988). Shooting to fame with “Naked” (1993), Leigh was welcomed to the Croisette on multiple occasions, most notably winning Best Director for his iconic “Secrets & Lies” (1996). From “Another Year” (2010) to “Peterloo” (2018), his filmography is a true treat for cinema fans. In this almost two-hour discussion with French author, journalist and film critic Michel Ciment (“Positif”), the English director gives insights into his career and talks about his approach to filmmaking: How he managed to pursue his own artistic vision without studio interference, the challenges of historical adaptations based on true events, his casting process and the resulting special relationship with actors, the role of improvisation in his directorial style, and what distinguishes his method from that of other directors. But he also delves into his family background, how being the son of first-generation British parents drove him to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and influences the way he chooses a subject matter and tackles a project to this day. And over the course of the discussion the idea for a new film about two elderly men alone on a stage is born. Luxfilmfest Podcast #6 - Masterclass: Abderrahmane Sissako (FR)

Le travail d’Abderrahmane Sissako se nourrit des thématiques de l’Afrique post-coloniale, de l’exil et des dynamiques Nord/Sud, qui sont abordées avec force et poésie dans ses nombreux films qui connaissent un franc succès. Premier cinéaste africain à obtenir le César du meilleur réalisateur avec « Timbuktu » (film présenté en compétition officielle au Festival de Cannes en 2014), le réalisateur et producteur mauritanien Abderrahmane Sissako converse avec l’écrivain, journaliste et critique de cinéma Michel Ciment (« Positif ») dans cette masterclass enregistrée devant public le 15 mars 2019 au Ciné Utopia lors du 9e Luxembourg City Film Festival. Au cours de leur discussion, les deux se plongent dans le cinéma de l’exil qui a permis à Abderrahmane Sissako d’acquérir une notoriété mondiale. Le réalisateur parle de son enfance au Mali, de sa passion pour le western, comment une table de tennis de table l’a amené à l’Institut national de cinématographie VGIK à Moscou et un séjour de 10 ans en URSS. Il évoque le film préféré de son œuvre – « Rostov-Luanda » - et l’importance du cinéma comme langue universelle dans sa genèse et élabore comment, grâce à son métier de cinéaste, il a pu montrer à l’Europe et le reste du monde la particularité du continent africain. Dans toute la conversation prévalent la critique du colonialisme de l’Afrique du réalisateur, ainsi que son optimisme et sa notion que l’exile est une opportunité, une chance de s’enrichir. Luxfilmfest Podcast #5 - Conversations avec Darius Khondji (FR/EN)

Darius Khondji, l’un des plus grands chefs opérateurs – ou « cinematographers », terme préféré par lui-même – du cinéma contemporain fait son entrée dans le cycle de rencontres du LuxFilmFest. Né d’un père iranien et d’une mère française, Darius Khondji revient sur un parcours l’ayant conduit de Paris à Hollywood, l’établissant rapidement comme l’une des références absolues de la composition de l’image. On doit à Darius Khondji certaines des plus importantes photographies du siècle. Difficile d’établir une filmographie sélective tant son œuvre est immense, mais citons : « Delicatessen » (1991) de Jean-Pierre Jeunet et Marc Caro, « Seven » (1995) de David Fincher, « La neuvième porte » (1999) de Roman Polanski, « Minuit à Paris » de Woody Allen, « Amour » (2012) de Michael Haneke, « The Lost City of Z » (2016) de James Gray, ou encore, plus récemment, la série « Too Old to Die Young » de Nicolas Winding Refn. L’éclairage sur cette carrière d’exception est assuré par Jordan Mintzer, l’auteur du livre « Conversations avec Darius Khondji » et critique de cinéma pour le « Hollywood Reporter ». Au cours de leur conversation, Darius Khondji parle de l’évolution de son métier au cours des années et dans l’ère du cinéma numérique, de l’impact de différents réalisateurs sur son travail de « cameraman », et des différences d’approche à ses films et sa première série, « Too Old to Die Young » de Nicolas Winding Refn. Avant de répondre à des questions du public, il aborde l’importance de sortir de sa zone de confort pour progresser et trouver des nouveaux aspects intéressants et créatifs – un défi auquel il était confronté au tournage de « Seven ». Et finalement, il répond à la question qui hante beaucoup de directeurs de la photo si un bon film doit forcément être beau ? Sa réponse vous surprendra. Luxfilmfest Podcast #4 - Masterclass Ray Liotta

With more than 60 feature films to his credit, Ray Liotta has chosen diverse and challenging roles in both comedies and dramas. A New Jersey native, Liotta started his film career with a Golden Globe nominated performance in "Something Wild" (1986). But it was his portrayal of Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas" (1990) that gained him widespread acclaim. In 2017, Ray Liotta took part in the Luxembourg City Film Festival, presenting a masterclass in which he reflected on some of the highlights, but also the ups and downs of his career. In this hour-long talk, hosted by film critic for the Hollywood Reporter Boyd van Hoeij, at the hand of several scenes from his work ("Something Wild", "Goodfellas", "Observe and Report", "The Details"), the American actor delves into how he found his way into acting, the issues and opportunities of typecasting, differences between character and actor, his producing chops, his way of getting into character, actors' influence in the highly collaborative process of filmmaking, and how film festivals and independent films shape (or don't shape) the film industry as a whole. Eventually, he'll reveal some secrets from the set of "The Muppets", and - perhaps most surprisingly - his dislike for crunchy potato crisps.
