Kentucky football is 6-1, tied for first in the SEC and owns the No. 2 Strength of Record in the country - yet the Wildcats sit at No. 12 in the AP Poll and No. 26 in ESPN’s FPI. Those numbers can all exist at the same time, but they also reveal a much bigger problem with how college football rankings are discussed. On today's episode of Locked On Kentucky, Lance Dawe breaks down Kentucky’s place in the Week 8 AP Top 25 and explains why the issue isn’t necessarily that the Wildcats are ranked 12th - it’s that the standards seem to change from team to team. Lance looks at Kentucky’s résumé, the gap between AP rankings, Strength of Record and FPI, and why preseason expectations and brand reputation still appear to influence how quickly teams are rewarded. Then, Lance unveils his own résumé-weighted Top 25 and compares it to the AP Poll, including Notre Dame, Texas Tech, Georgia, Florida, Texas and Auburn. Is there legitimate SEC bias in the rankings, or is the bigger issue inconsistent standards and reputation-based benefit of the doubt? Finally, Lance brings the conversation back to Kentucky’s actual season. The Wildcats don’t need to win an argument with AP voters - they need to keep winning football games. With Vanderbilt next and Kentucky already 6-1, the path to an even bigger season is right in front of Will Stein’s team. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
