    Can I Trust the Bible

    The worry underneath 2 Timothy 3:14-17 is simple: if the Bible came through people, and people fail us, how can the book be trusted? Paul answers by pointing straight at the people. Look at the lives, he tells Timothy, mine, your grandmother's, your mother's, and trace what actually blessed you. Every part of their lives worth imitating is the part that followed Scripture, and every part that hurt you is the part that disobeyed it. The failures of people don't discredit the Word; they prove it told the truth about us. The deeper reason the Word holds is that it never belonged to man in the first place. All Scripture is breathed out by God, carried through human writers the way the Word became flesh without ceasing to be God, and the same sovereign God who numbers hairs kept watch over its transmission, which is why the manuscripts, the scrolls, and the historical details keep holding up under testing. So the one who has been burned by church people isn't asked to trust people again. They're asked to remain in the Word that saved them, the Word that proves reliable in their own life every time they build on it, and that is still able to make them wise for salvation and complete for every good work.

    Reasoning Our Hope

    Your hope is not held up by how well you can argue for it; it is held up by the risen Christ, which frees you to witness without fear and stand unshaken when it costs you.

    When the two sides demand you pick one, Jesus refuses both and runs a different test on the coin in your hand, render Caesar the metal that bears his image and refuse him your neighbor, your enemy, and yourself, who bear God's.

    The desire to be rich is not a money problem but a soul problem, because money cannot deliver the security and contentment we secretly ask it to guarantee, and only a life lived before the face of God can carry wealth without being pierced by it.

    The Pleasure Experiment

    This sermon on Ecclesiastes 2 argues that pleasure itself isn't broken—our method of pursuing it is. Solomon's experiment of total self-indulgence proved that earthly pleasures, though genuinely enjoyable, are ultimately "vanity"—they never last and never fully satisfy. The root problem is that God has placed eternity in our hearts, so finite pleasures will always leave us empty. The solution isn't abstinence but a shift from indulging (taking) to enjoying (receiving)—recognizing pleasure as a gift from God rather than something to grasp. When we see God as the source of all good things, pleasure becomes a signpost toward Him rather than a substitute for Him, and the cycle of craving and emptiness is replaced by delight and worship.

    Calling

    We tell ourselves our restlessness about the future is just responsibility, just wanting to honor God with our lives. But trace it down far enough and you hit the garden. The serpent's promise was "you will be like God, knowing" and Adam and Eve grabbed for it while already walking with God in unbroken nearness. They traded His face for His mind, the relationship for the information, and we do the exact same thing every time we lie awake trying to decode His hidden plan instead of drawing near to the God who is right there speaking. The cruel irony is that the more frantically we reach for the map, the more we miss the Mapmaker, who never promised to show you year ten but did promise to be with you in hour one. So here is the concrete thing: name the decision you are white-knuckling right now, the job, the move, the relationship, and physically put it down for one day. Stop asking God to remove the risk. Open His Word, get on your knees, and ask Him instead to make you near. Win today. Your Father already knows tomorrow, and He is for you in it.

    Ruth and Boaz show that when we live for God, we bear the following fruits. We are fully alive in both work and play, we are emotionally expressive and physically self controlled in love, and we value both generosity and privacy.

    Emptying for Glory

    From 1 Timothy 5:1-8 and Paul's instruction concerning widows, we learn that the latter half of life, both empty nesting and old age, is not merely a domestic or physical adjustment but a profound new chapter of discipleship marked by emptying. While the world treats this season as loss to be resisted, Scripture frames it as kenosis, the very pattern Jesus modeled in Philippians 2 of receiving, humbling, and being glorified. Older saints are called to receive the emptying rather than reject it, humbly placing their hope in God rather than themselves, and resisting the twin temptations of self-indulgence and bitterness that leave a soul "dead even while she lives." Instead, this season is meant to be one of filling, with grace, gratitude, and worship, leading to a godly pouring out through intercession, testimony, and spiritual mothering and fathering of the next generation. Younger saints, in turn, are charged not to assault or overlook older members but to walk alongside them with purity and compassion, as fathers, mothers, brothers, and sisters. The passage finds its fullest picture on the Road to Emmaus, where the risen Jesus draws near to two emptied, disappointed disciples, walks at their pace, opens the Scriptures to reveal that emptying is the road to glory, fills their hearts at the breaking of bread, and sends them running back to pour out their testimony: the picture of every saint's second-half journey with Christ.
