    The Son’s Role in my Redemption | Romans 8:1–2

    As Christians, we worship the Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In the unity of the Godhead, these three Persons execute distinct but harmonious offices in our redemption. Romans 8:1–4 is one of the rare places in all the Bible where we see all three Persons of the Trinity executing these roles together. In this message, we will focus on the role of the Son, Jesus Christ, in the great work of redemption.  Take-Home Message: The great work of redemption is the great work of the Triune God. The Son’s Role in my Redemption: Christ’s Pardon: The Son took on my death sentence.Christ’s Power: The Son sets me free from sin and death.Christ’s Control: The Son holds all things together, allowing for my continued redemption.  Christ’s Example: The Son suffered the most as an example for me to follow.Christ’s Intercession: The Son advocates for His people.Christ’s Gifts: The Son gives leaders for the building up of His church.Christ’s Return: The Son will return to fully redeem His people.

    The Holy Spirit’s Role in My Redemption | Romans 8:2

    As Christians, we worship the Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In the unity of the Godhead, these three Persons execute distinct but harmonious offices in our redemption. Romans 8:2–4 is one of the rare places in all the Bible where we see all three Persons of the Trinity executing these roles together. In this message, we will focus on the role of the Holy Spirit in the great work of redemption. The Holy Spirit is not a force; He is a Person that wills, feels and thinks. He is also God, worthy of the same honor and equal in divinity with the Father and the Son. We will examine the ways in which the Holy Spirit has set us free from the law of sin and death, and how the Holy Spirit continues to set us free from sin and death. Take-Home Message: The great work of redemption is the great work of the Triune God. The Holy Spirit’s Role in my Redemption: The Spirit of Life: The Holy Spirit, in Christ Jesus, sets me free from sin and death.The Spirit as Convictor: The Holy Spirit convinces me of my need for Jesus.The Spirit as Regenerator: The Holy Spirit regenerates me.The Spirit of Adoption: The Holy Spirit bears witness to my adoption into God’s family.The Spirit as Renewer: The Holy Spirit renews my life.The Spirit of Truth: The Holy Spirit teaches me the truth.The Spirit of Grace: The Holy Spirit distributes unmerited favor to me.The Spirit as Intercessor: The Holy Spirit intercedes for me in my prayers.The Spirit as Helper: The Holy Spirit helps me live out my walk with Christ.The Spirit as Equipper: The Holy Spirit equips me for the building up of the church.The Spirit as Seal and Guarantee: The Holy Spirit seals and guarantees me for eternal life in Christ.

    No Condemnation in Christ Jesus | Romans 8:1

    Romans 8 is among the most famous chapters in all the Bible. Christians have hoped and found freedom in these words for centuries. This glorious chapter begins with a verse often quoted today: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (8:1) But what does that mean for followers of Jesus? In this message, we will define condemnation’s biblical meaning, trace its use through Romans, then spend most of our time applying what it means for the believer’s life today. Take-Home Message (Romans 8:1): There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. A Biblical Definition of Condemnation: The judicial verdict of condemnation issued against a guilty party. It describes the divine sentence that looms over all humanity because of Adam’s fall and our universal sin. It can also be translated as “death sentence.”  Tracing Condemnation Through Romans: Condemnation enters through Adam’s sin. Condemnation is universal.Condemnation is conquered by Christ’s act of righteousness.Condemnation is replaced with Christ’s righteousness for the believer.There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. What Does No Condemnation in Christ Jesus Mean for Believers? My eternal condemnation is removed.Evaluation of my life remains.Conviction replaces my condemnation.I am freed to confess my sin.Evangelism and missions matter.I worship Christ Jesus because He freed me from condemnation.

    The Believer’s War with Indwelling Sin: Part 2 | Romans 7:14-25

    Romans 6 held up the great victory we have over sin through our union with Christ. Because we have been crucified with Christ, we have been set free from sin (6:6–7). Now, Romans 7:14–25 deals with the reality of remaining sin. While believers are already justified in Christ, we are not yet fully delivered from indwelling sin. Three times in these verses, Paul speaks of sin still dwelling in us even after our conversion. In other words, there is still a war in us between the law of God and the law of sin (7:25). The decisive victory has been won, but we are still called to fight! In this message, we will discuss the good that comes from the believer’s ongoing war with indwelling sin. Take-Home Message: Sin no longer rules over me, but sin still dwells within me. Two Truths for Believers:  I am already justified in Christ.I am not yet fully delivered from indwelling sin. Two extremes to Avoid: Perfectionism: The idea that I can be made perfectly holy and completely free from sin in this life.Defeatism: The idea that I cannot make progress in the Christian life. The Believer’s War with Indwelling Sin: My war with indwelling sin teaches me to delight in God’s Law (21-23).My war with indwelling sin prepares me for final deliverance through Christ (24-25).My war with indwelling sin equips me to turn and strengthen others (Lk. 22:31-32)

    The Believer’s War with Indwelling Sin: Part 1 | Romans 7:14-25

Evidence that Paul is speaking of the present Christian experience:  Paul uses I, me, and my 39 times, and he speaks in the present tense.Paul speaks of the present Christian experience in a similar way elsewhere.Paul speaks of his pre-Christian experience in a radically different way elsewhere.The sequence of Romans 7:25 points to the present Christian experience. The Believer’s War with Indwelling Sin: My war with indwelling sin vindicates God’s Law (14, 16).My war with indwelling sin teaches me to hate sin (15).My war with indwelling sin cultivates humility (24).

    The Law and Sin | Romans 7:7-13

    After explaining the Gospel in Romans 1-5, Paul turns to dealing with distortions of its message. In Romans 6, he defended God’s grace. Now in Romans 7, he defends God’s Law. Paul knew that his statements about the Law in Romans may lead critics to suggest he thought the Law was bad. Yet he shouts in Romans 7:12, the Law is good! God’s Law serves His purposes by exposing sin, yet sin seeks to seize this good Law and use it to kill us. Paul’s argument that the Law is good, but the Gospel is better, will reach a crescendo in Romans 8:3-4– “For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”  Take-Home Message: God’s good Law exposes sin, but only His Gospel can defeat it. In Defense of the Law: The Law is not sinful; it exposes sin (7).The Law is not sinful; it is seized by sin (7b-8)The Law is not sinful; it is sin that kills me (9-13). Take-Home Lessons: God’s Law is good.Sin can use good things for bad purposes.Sin kills me by lying to me.How does sin use the Law to lie to me?The lie of self-righteousness– I can keep the Law well enough to save myself.The lie of self-indulgence– I cannot keep the Law well enough to save myself, so I might as well get all the fleeting pleasure out of life that I can.The Gospel defeats sin where the Law could not.

    Believers and the Law | Romans 7:1-6

    The term “law” occurs eight times in Romans 7:1-6, and it is among the topics of greatest confusion for believers today. What is the believer in Jesus’ relationship to the Law of Moses and the entire Old Testament? What do we do with this giant first chunk of our Bibles? These verses show us that, while the law is good (Rom. 7:12), Jesus is better. In other words, the New Covenant is better than the Old Covenant. For you “have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God.” (Rom. 7:4)  Take-Home Message: Believers have been joined to a better husband. The Purpose of the Law (1-3) What is the purpose of the Law?A Teacher: The Law teaches me about the Lawmaker.A Mirror: The Law reveals my sinfulness.A Guardian: The Law prepares me for Christ.A Christ-Exalter: The Law reveals and exalts Jesus. The Believer’s New Way of Life (4-6) The Believer’s New Way of Life:Believers have been released from our old way of life (5).Believers have been joined to a better husband (4).Believers are joined to Christ to bear fruit for God (4).Believers bear fruit through the Holy Spirit (6).

    Death or Life? | Romans 6:20–23

    From beginning to end, the Bible presents two paths, one leading to death and one to life. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). It is only in Christ Jesus that a person finds life, and the evidence that a person is in Christ is their spiritual “fruit.” What fruit are you producing, and what does it say about the path you are on? “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (Matthew 7:13–14). Take-Home Message: You are either on the path leading to death or the path leading to life. The path leading to death (20–21). Believers, Unbelievers, and Shame:Believers are not ashamed of Jesus.Believers are ashamed of past sins.Unbelievers take pride in what is shameful.Believers and unbelievers have historically held opposing views of what is shameful.In the end, believers will be vindicated, and unbelievers will be put to shame. The path leading to life (22–23). Roadblocks to Good Fruit:“I don’t know the Bible.”“I don’t know how to put it into practice.”“I don’t want to put it into practice.”
