The production is spare, with acoustic and electric guitars, bass, some keyboards, and percussion to support his clear vocals. These four songs range from melancholy to celebratory, I’m looking forward to what he does next. ALAW Dead Man’s Dance by ALAW favorite track Lisa Lân This trio from Wales perform both traditional and original tunes, sung in English and Welsh. Instruments are guitars, piano, mandocello, lap steel, violin, viola, mandolin, cajon, accordion, and all three sing. They are joined by others on vocals, and adding cello and pipes. The music is varied, from jubilant to wistful and mournful. Spiral Bound by Ernest Aines favorite track Lady in Waiting Australian singer-songwriter Ernest Aines swings deftly from the ethereal to Americana, and a few places in between. Sparse and clean production bring the stories he tells to the fore, utilizing mostly guitars, with his fine vocals. Being me, I love the ethereal tracks. Tied to the Land by The Owl Service favorite track Bonny at Morn UK psych folk quartet have released this new full-length recording of all new material, with some personnel changes. Three of them provide vocals, with other instrumentation being guitars, organ, mellotron, percussion, and some assists on violin and saxophone. They draw from traditional tunes and folk tales, as well as including some instrumentals. Although I love their take on The Trees They Do Grow High, am going with the perhaps less familiar Bonny At Morn. Moulded By Industry by William D. Drake favorite track A Vision Former Cardiacs member’s sixth solo release. This is in his inimitable style, which is a whimsical blend of psych, neo-classical, and art rock. He contributes vocals, piano, harmonium & Mellotron, and is joined by guests on hurdy-gurdy, dulcitone, melodeon, guitars, bass, drums, and backing vocals. I’m torn between the more pastoral “Green Shadows,” and the searing psychedelic experience and searing guitar in“A Vision.” Horizon (ft Svaneborg Kardyb) by Caoilfhionn Rose Jazz/Folk singer/songwiter from Manchester is joined by Danish electronic jazz duo for this gorgeous teaser of her upcoming full-length release early next year. Her silken voice is perfectly supported by the laid-back production and accompaniment here. Lost Stories of Old by Adrian von Ziegler favorite track Lost Stories of Old This is another lovely Celtic-leaning fantasy/folk recording from Swiss composer and multi-instrumentalist Adrian Von Ziegler. The music is contemplative and transportive. All That Glitters… by Robert Plant favorite track Poison Follow-up to last year’s release, this EP again teams Robert Plant and Suzi Dian on vocals, adeptly backed with guitar, banjo, cello, and other strings, and percussion. Comprised of two traditional and two cover tunes, my favourite track, “Poison,” was penned by the late, great Bert Jansch. Omen om Uår by Songleikr feat. Árstíðir A perfect pairing of talents, Norwegian band Songleikr is joined by Icelanders Árstíðir. The song is entitled Omen of a Bad Harvest, an original piece inspired by the Nordic concept of an “unyear,” essentially, a bad year. It sounds from the beauty of the piece that they pooled their resources and survived through cooperation Tungl by Eivør favorite track Drekafljóð / Dragon Maiden Faroese folktronica artist Eivør returns with yet another stunning release. Her vocals are truly mesmerizing, hitting even the highest notes with power, without becoming shrill, with her lower register also displayed in full. The overall effect is of yearning and depth of emotion, whether she is leaning more to the electronica or the folk side. Most of the lush tracks are sung in her native Faroese, which only adds to the feeling of mystery and exaltation. Here’s the Rub by Andrew Bird & Ted Poor Lovely collaboration of Chicagoan singer/songwriter Andrew Bird, and Seattle drummer, composer, and producer, Ted Poor. The production is spare and the haunting call to “resist,” is irresistible, despite the hardships it may cause.
