    Christ’s Power over Nature

    Northwest Bible Church - Oct. 18, 2026 - Matthew - Alan Conner Matthew 8:23-27 Christ’s Power over Nature Intro A. JESUS AND THE BOAT (Matthew 8:23). 1. Purpose: to go to the other side, cf. Matthew 8:18. 2. His disciples followed Him. Indicates the true nature of discipleship. 3. The Jesus boat. B. JESUS AND THE STORM (Matthew 8:24). 1. A great storm arose on the sea. Cf. Luke 8:23 “Fierce gale of wind” 2. The boat was being covered with the waves. 3. Jesus was asleep in the stern of the boat. C. JESUS AND THE DISCIPLES (Matthew 8:25). 1. They came to Jesus and woke Him up. 2. They were terrified, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing!” D. JESUS AND THE TWO-FOLD REBUKE (Matthew 8:26). 1. Jesus rebuked His disciples. a. “Why are you afraid” - b. “You men of little faith” - 2. Jesus rebuked the storm. Mark 4:39 tells us He said, “Hush, be still”. E.     The Cost of Discipleship

    Northwest Bible Church - Oct. 11, 2026 - Matthew - Alan Conner Matthew 8:18-22 The Cost of Discipleship Intro A. JESUS PREPARES TO CROSS THE SEA (Matthew 8:18). 1. Why? 2. The disciples proceeded to secure a boat to make the journey. B. THE CHALLENGE OF DISCIPLESHIP (Matthew 8:19-22). 1. Counting the cost of discipleship (Matthew 8:19-20). a. The scribe’s commitment (Matthew 8:19). “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” b. Jesus’ challenge (Matthew 8:20). “Foxes have holes and birds have nests, they have homes to              live in but the SON OF MAN has nowhere to lay His head.” c. The “Son of Man” expression. Why did Jesus use this phrase of Himself? (1) Christ’s humanity. (2) Christ’s deity (Daniel 7:13-14). 2. Devotion to Christ should exceed devotion to family (Matthew 8:21-22). a. Another request (Matthew 8:21). “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father. “ b.     Christ the Great Physician

    Northwest Bible Church - Oct. 4, 2026 - Matthew - Alan Conner Matthew 8:14-17 Christ the Great Physician Intro   A. CHRIST HEALED PETER’S MOTHER-IN-LAW (Matthew 8:14-15). 1. Peter was married. 2. Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. a. He touched her and she was healed. b. She immediately got up and began to wait on Him. B. CHRIST HEALED THE DEMON-POSSESSED (Matthew 8:16a). 1. Christ cast out many who were demon-possessed. 2. Jesus has complete authority over them and casts them out with a word. 3. Such demonstrations indicate the kingdom of God has come. Matthew 12:28-29 4. Jesus is telegraphing His victory over Satan on the cross. Colossians 2:15; Hebrews 2:14 C. CHRIST HEALED ALL WHO WERE ILL (Matthew 8:16b). 1. Every ill person was healed. 2. The healing of sickness is a foretaste of Christ’s healing of sin. D. CHRIST’S HEALINGS FULFILLED PROPHECY (Matthew 8:17). 1. Matthew’s quotation of Isaiah 53:4. a. Physical healing was a part of the messianic age. Isaiah 35:5-6 b. Matthew accurately quotes from Isaiah 53:4. 2. The faulty view of the Charismatics. a. It is not always God’s will to heal. b. When God chooses not to heal it always for our good. The centurion at Capernaum is a Gentile (Matthew 8:5).     2. The request of the Centurion (Matthew 8:6).     3. Jesus’ response (Matthew 8:7). “I will come and heal him.” B. THE FAITH OF THE CENTURION (Matthew 8:8-9).     1. humble faith (Matthew 8:8a) - Cf. Acts 10:28; John 18:28     2. strong faith (Matthew 8:8b) -     3. reasoned faith (Matthew 8:9) - C. THE RESPONSE OF JESUS (Matthew 8:10-13).     1. Jesus marveled (Matthew 8:10).         a. “Truly I say to you,”         b. “I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel.”     2. Jesus prophesied (Matthew 8:11-12).           a. Many from EAST and WEST and recline with the patriarchs in the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 8:11). Genesis 12:3; Zechariah 2:11; Micah 4:2; Joel 2:28; Amos 9:11-12; Isaiah 25:6-8.           b. The sons of the kingdom (Jews) will be “cast into the outer darkness, in that place will be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 8:12).       3. Jesus healed the centurion’s servant immediately (Matthew 8:13). APPLICATION     1. Compassion for the despised and rejected. 1 Corinthians 6:11.     2. The importance of faith.     3.     Cleansing of the Leper

Large crowds followed Jesus (Matthew 8:1).     2. The leper approached Jesus.         a. Luke 5:12 says the man was “covered with leprosy.”         b. Leprosy was considered an uncleanness, it defiled.         c. Leprosy was looked upon as a curse or judgment of God.     3. The leper bowed down before Him (Matthew 8:2).     4. Request: “Lord, if you are willing, You can make me clean.”   B. THE RESPONSE OF THE SAVIOR (Matthew 8:3-4).     1. Jesus touched the leper.     2. Jesus cleansed the leper. “I am willing; be cleansed.”         a. Immediate healing         b. Complete healing.     3. Jesus instructs the leper.         a. Tell no one.         b.
