Conor Hourihane on his start to life as a coach

ON THIS bonus podcast episode, we chat to West Cork’s most famous soccer player Conor Hourihane after a season as head coach of Barnsley. The former Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland player was back home in Bandon this week so it was a great time for Kieran McCarthy to catch up. He has played in all of the top four English leagues, was West Cork’s first ever Premier League goalscorer, captained Barnsley to gain promotion to the Championship and helped Villa return to the Premier League. Hourihane also played 36 times for his country, the only West Cork man ever to play senior with the national team. After departing Barnsley at the end of the 2025/26 campaign, we catch up with the Bandon man to see what he is up to now, his start to life in the dugout and his thoughts on the FIFA World Cup that kicks-off this week. Boxer Christina Desmond talks about going pro and Katie Taylor undercard possibility

ON THIS week’s podcast, we are joined by Cill na Martra boxer Christina Desmond after a great start to life as a professional boxer. Friend of the show, Desmond took her record to 5-0 after an impressive second-round stoppage win in her latest bout. Up against English fighter Sherie Barnes in a welterweight contest scheduled for eight rounds in Alicante, Desmond showed her class with an early finish, ending the fight with some quality combinations.  Fresh off her fifth straight win, she chats to Kieran McCarthy about her pro journey, the challenges, the enjoyment, and whether the Katie Taylor undercard on September 5th is a possibility. Also on the show, we delve into some GAA action as the Cork hurlers lost to Limerick (2-17 to 1-21) in the Munster SHC final. The result means the Rebels have to go through the All-Ireland quarter-final route and host Matthew Hurley was made to fulfil a forfeit for this week’s podcast. The Cork footballers are in action this weekend as they face Donegal in Ballybofey and we chat about the game not being shown on GAA+ nor RTÉ. All this and more on this week's Star Sport Podcast. Carbery U15 hurling manager Joe O’Donnell on their progress

ON THIS week’s podcast, we chat to Carbery U15 hurling manager Joe O’Donnell as the team are having a good start to their Rebel Óg Premier 1 Hurling League season. After beating established hurling clubs Blackrock (5-14 to 4-11) and Glen Rovers (5-23 to 5-17), the West Cork division are going very well in their opening season. They face Midleton in Newcestown this Thursday (8pm) as they hope to continue their impressive start. With games against Douglas and Duhallow to follow too, there is a lot of excitement around the squad. O’Donnell, a Limerick man who moved down to Bantry in the late 90s is trying to change the standards of West Cork hurling and is doing tremendous work with his adopted club Bantry Blues too. He also talks about the Cork and Limerick hurling rivalry as the two sides look in pole position to contest the All-Ireland SHC. Ben O’Connor’s Cork hurlers face the Treaty in the Munster final after seeing off Clare 1-30 to 1-14, completing their fourth win in succession in the provincial round robin. We discuss the footballers’ fantastic victory over Meath (0-30 to 1-24). John Cleary’s men progress to Round 2A of the All-Ireland SFC and are one game away from a quarter-final in Croke Park. A dominant display by the Rebels whose squad included McCarthy, Niamh Kennedy (both Clonakilty), Millie Condon (Ballinascarthy), Meabh O’Brien (Enniskeane) and Catherine and Mary Murphy (Kinsale). CORK V KERRY: Munster SFC final preview with John Hayes

ON THIS week’s podcast, we are joined by Star Sport columnist John Hayes to look ahead to the hotly anticipated Munster SFC final between Cork and Kerry on Sunday in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney (1.45pm). This is the first provincial final meeting since 2021 between the sides as the Rebels are looking for a first Munster triumph since 2012. Other hoodoos for John Cleary’s team include not beating the Kingdom in a Munster decider since 2008 and not winning a championship match in Killarney since 1995. With Cork earning promotion from Division 2 this season and currently on a run of eight victories in ten games. Furthermore, Kerry could be down a few key players judging by the reports coming out of the opposition’s camp. It promises to be a great clash and should go down to the wire.
