    Leaving Instagram: An Audio Diary

    Leaving Instagram: An Audio Diary

After spending my entire adult life building a career on social media, I decided to step away from it all to see what would happen. In the virtual world I was thriving but in reality I was more isolated and insecure than ever. I needed to see for myself if the cycle of internet attention and rejection had anything to do with it.

I recorded a series of diary entries over the ensuing weeks to track my progress. My hope here is to start a dialogue about social media and its damaging effects on mental health and the creative process. These things are not easy to talk about, especially when your income depends on maintaining your popularity. But this is something that I have to put out there. I look forward to hearing your own thoughts and experiences.

You are not an art machine!

You are not an art machine!

What do you do when you've got limited time and limitless ideas? You'll need to pick and choose your projects, especially if you want to have a consistent output. But don't get too caught up in the end results—you're an artist, not a machine! It's important to keep exploring and experimenting throughout your career, even if it doesn't pay.

Really wish there was more!

I’ve listened to this podcast through and through several times since I first heard it when it came out. I listen to it when I’m in doubt about pursuing art, and it brings me back to feeling motivated, every single time. This podcast makes me feel like life as an artist is actually tangible, which is something that has never even crossed my mind before. August you are truly inspiring and real, and I hope you continue with this podcast or write a book about your experiences!
