News; dictionary.com word of the year; game: Halloween antagonists in the movies; goodbye/fun facts....national oatmeal day...Oatmeal, while praised today by nutritionists and health gurus, comes from very humble beginnings. The last of the cereal grains to be domesticated by western society 3,000 year ago, the oats for oatmeal came from weeds that grew in fields prepared for other crops. Ancient Romans saw oats as an unfortunate and diseased wheat and used them as cheap horse food. Though oats are still used in horse food today, oats are grown specifically for human consumption. And for good reason! The fiber within oats is more soluble than any other grain. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and turns into a thick, viscous gel, which moves slowly through the body. This means it keeps you full for long periods of time.

News; instead of bingeing TV...have you tried slow TV?; game: general trivia; goodbye/fun facts....international animation day...commemorates the day when animation had its first public appearance. That was October 28, 1892, at a museum in Paris, when Charles-Émile Reynaud and his Théâtre Optique presented his first production,--It was a collection of three cartoons. Then in 1888 when Reynaud patented Théâtre Optique, a machine that produced images on a screen using 36 mirrors, two supplementary lights called magic lanterns that were the source of a stationary background, and a projector. The images were painted on a long band that would be wound up on two spools that had to be rotated by hand. By 1900, animation had begun to evolve. By 1923 Walt and Roy O. Disney found the Walt Disney Company --and in 1995 come an entirely new take on animation with Pixar and "Toy Story," the world's first computer-animated feature film.

In some locales, notably Scotland, Britain, and Japan, the presence or appearance of a black cat is indicative of imminent good fortune and prosperity. In much of the Western world, black cats are considered to be harbingers of misfortune and wickedness....which can largely be linked to the Middle Ages whereby people believed that witches were shape-shifting black cats....but that tide is changing.  Rather than being associated with bad luck, they are now being associated with strength and elegance. This is why black cat gifts, including jewelry charm bracelets and artwork, have become so popular with people who are looking to send positive and uplifting messages to their loved ones.

Though its name is a bit confusing—it contains no chicken—its history is a classic American story of immigrant ingenuity and regional culinary tradition. The origins of chicken fried steak can be traced back to German and Austrian immigrants who settled in Texas during the 19th century. These settlers brought with them a taste for Wiener Schnitzel, a traditional dish made from a thin, breaded, and pan-fried veal cutlet...The name "chicken fried steak" comes from the preparation method, which is nearly identical to the way Southern-style fried chicken is made.

When  in 1856 French chef Monsieur Augustine Francois Anezin created a masterpiece by layering two rounds of golden sponge cake with a thick, velvety vanilla custard. To finish, he draped the entire creation in a rich, glossy chocolate glaze for The Parker House Hotel (now the Omni Parker House Hotel) in, of course, Boston  in those days cakes and pies were baked with the same kinds of pans, and even the words were used interchangeably. As a result, the Boston cream pie kept its old-fashioned name, in addition to its delicious flavor.

Many of them are used in cooking, eaten raw, sprouted, or roasted as a snack food, and pressed for oil that is used in cookery and cosmetics. Many nuts are excellent sources of vitamins E and B2. They are also rich in protein, folate fiber, and essential minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and selenium. Walnuts can be traced back to 10,000BC – making them the oldest tree food...but today, from a culinary/edible perspective, there are about 25 to 35 major edible nut types globally...so grab a handful for your health.

News; game: everybody knows; what's your 'I'm not proud of this...but I love this snack'!; goodbye/fun facts....Pumpkin Cheesecake is a delightful dessert and a perfect blend of texture and taste. Imagine a velvety base of rich cream cheese, sugar, and eggs, infused with pumpkin purée and a warm medley of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. This luscious filling is often nestled in a buttery crust made from graham crackers or crushed cookies. Cheesecakes can be dated as far back as the 5th century B.C. when the ancient Greeks made them with cheese pounded with honey and flour. The cheesecake was then elevated in late medieval England, where it emerged with a tart-like pastry base. It spread rapidly across the region. Given its popularity in England, cheesecake soon made an appearance in American colonies---American cheesecake truly took a new form when cream cheese was introduced. Bakers went on to experiment with an endless array of different flavorings and toppings — blueberry, strawberry, chocolate — and along the way, the pumpkin cheesecake was born.
